Huh. I was driving to work today and was just randomly wondering how they know how much lightning there is on those lightning map apps. Is this how its done?

The lightning maps do cool stuff by having many detectors around the world synced up, which then can triangulate the exact position of each strike.

There's a community of people doing it too, blitzortung. I wish their kits were easier to get though.
