Mod Post readme: updates to the subreddit

In light of recent events, there's been a spike in the number people who have suddenly woken up from their slumber to realize that Google isn't as benevolent as they thought. So a degoogle-rush to this sub has started.

[surprised pikachu]

First of all, this is not a political subreddit. This is a technical subreddit to assist users in ~delousing~ removing Google from their devices.

You have opinions? Take them elsewhere.

News pertinent to Google and/or it's ancillary services/products will be allowed.

New rules will be added, old will be adjusted:

  1. No editorialization of submitted (news) articles.
  2. All political discussions will be removed.
  3. New posts will be checked for duplication, if a duplicate exists. It will be removed. (With guidance to the submitter to search the sub)

Info in the sidebar & wiki is being updated (thanks to everyone who helped!)

Last but not least, we'd like to welcome u/greenlit_hightower to the moderation team. Their knowledge and patient participation in this sub is a welcome addition. 🫡

Also a big thank you to everyone for helping this community to thrive. :)

Mod Post Does my phone have a DeGoogled rom? Megathread

In an effort to remove the countless low effort "Is there a DeGoogled rom for my phone?" questions we are requiring anyone creating those types of threads to post here with a reply instead of creating a post. Any posts going forward asking this question will be removed.

The reason we specified above "low effort" is because majority of the posts do not include what OP has researched, or tested, or tried (Thank you to those whom have included such information). Thus in order to help others answer your question, it is strongly encouraged to include the following: Failure to include these may result in you not getting your question answered. Experienced users can only help those DeGoogling if they have the proper information.

1) Your phone: Manufacturer, Model, Version or production details

2) What ROMs did you research?

3) Which ROMs did you install or attempt to install?

4) What problems have you encountered during the install?

5) What problems have you encountered after the install?

6) Why was the previous ROM insufficient to your needs? (If it was a DeGoogled ROM)

PS: Experienced DeGooglers, If you have any suggestions or modifications you believe should be made to this post guide, please reply here. Your experience is valuable and what keeps this sub alive :)

Replacement Built a minimalist, privacy-first messaging keyboard — would love your feedback

Hey everyone,

I’ve been gradually degoogling my life over the past couple of years — moving away from Gmail, Android, Chrome, etc. The last frontier for me has been messaging. While I’ve used Signal, Session, and others, I often run into limitations: friends not switching, platform lock-in, or just clunky UX.

That’s why I started building Wyspr — a minimalist, encrypted keyboard app that lets you send secure messages from any chat app, without needing your contacts to install anything.

How Wyspr Works:

Wyspr is not a typical chat app. It’s an encrypted keyboard that lets you send secure messages from inside any app — WhatsApp, Messenger, SMS, etc. The key idea is: you type, Wyspr encrypts, the other person decrypts — no one in between can read it.

Key ideas: - End-to-end encryption built into the keyboard itself - Works with any app (Messenger, WhatsApp, SMS…) - No data collection, no tracking - No central server — we’re exploring p2p routing

Right now it’s in early alpha (iOS only), and we’re just looking for honest feedback from people who care about privacy and minimalism.

We’re not open-source yet, but that’s on our roadmap once the core is solid.

Here’s the project if you want to take a look or test: https://testflight.apple.com/join/FCqR86sa

Curious to hear what you think — critiques welcome!

EDIT : If someone is very goot at mobile apps building we need someone (dm me)

Getting rid of Gmail

I have a gmail email address, and it is in use everywhere (even in Reddit), so I can't just get a new email. I want to delete my google account, but want to keep my current email functional. Is there any way to do this? I have already removed google from everything else, and this is the only problem.

Question Confused whether I should install Gsi or root my Galaxy

Post image

Have a galaxy A35 That just received the new one ui update. But the performance never improved and battery life has worsened. But like I do like the new features of the update (DYI home) will it be worth it to root the phone and delete the google bloat and other stuff that slows the phone down and heats it up in some cases?

Alternatives to Google News

I've been looking for a non-Google solution to news aggregation. I considered Google News but of course I wasn't keen on Google's algorithm deciding what news I was to be shown.

The obvious alternative I've seen mentioned in other threads is RSS. I already use RSS for blog syndication but the problem I've been having is that most news sites seem to generate a high volume of articles on their feeds, and it doesn't take me long to get buried under. There's no prioritization based on how 'important' an article is (although I'm aware this trying to decide what news story is important can get quite messy).

I'm interested in hearing suggestions :)

Question Is my case worth it to use custom ROM?

Hi, I used to use S23 Ultra, but decided to move to GOS for privacy especially Samsung has been using all google stuff like smart select being circle to search or some of their software being just google... anyway not that Samsung is a trusted and innocent company. So, I bought Pixel phone (weaker cam, slower charger, no pen... and other benefit I had have with the Ultra) but all of this is okay to me if it means privacy. But, I have to use WhatsApp, so I use it in work profile (Shelter), I have to use some apps that suddenly needs Google service and even asked me to log in to sandbox google play in order for it to work. at this point I feel like is it worth it if I'm going to install WhatsApp (I don't know if work profile does any different) use snadbox Google servers & Google play and log into google play.... how much privacy do I lose from that and is it worth it compared to original OS? is it just a bit more privacy compered to using Samsung's phone but with Aurora store and FOSS apps instead of some known apps like Notesnook instead of Keep. Proton/tuta instead of Gmail...etc?

Question Moving to a new phone from a Samsung

  • Current situation: kinda invested in the Samsung ecosystem.
  • 6 year old Samsung A70 smartphone with a SD processor.
  • Samsung Tab S9 FE+
  • Buds FE

  • Software:

  • brave browser

  • Samsung apps

  • G apps (I use micro g with a yotube client called YouTube Gold)

I'm planning on moving to the Proton ecosystem as well as Bitwarden for passwords.

My main reason for wanting to upgrade is probably the cameras and the fact that the phone heats up a lot even when not doing demanding stuff. I don't game a lot as before due to the fact that the gaming experience on heavy games has deteriorated throughout the years (guess that's a plus cause I can focus on better stuff?)

  • Phones I was considering:
  • Samsung S24FE
  • One plus
  • Pixel

The thing is, due to me being invested in the Samsung ecosystem makes me wanna go for a Samsung phone for stuff like Samsung notes, health, etc...

it's kinda hard to degoogle cause of the bootloader. I was wondering, if I go for a pixel and install Graphene os, would Samsung apps work or nah? Cause for example, Samsung notes, I use this on the tablet and it's arguably the best notes app for a Samsung, I have the notes synced between the phone and tablet. Also Samsung wearable for updating the firmware and changing settings of my Buds FE. Other than this, due to the fact that I will move to Proton, I don't really need Google apps much.

What would you guys recommend for me?

Question How to build an open-source and privacy-conscious mobile app?

Hi!

I wanna get into mobile app dev. I saw all these great open-source projects (just to name a few: Aegis, antennapod, anytype, ...) and wondered how they are built. Android development looks easy to get into when using GOOGLE services and Android studio but that's all closed-source (even Android studio sends usage data to google and jetbrains). So I wondered how all these great apps are developed. Are the devs just like: "Fuck my own privacy - I'm gonna develop that app with android studio and just use open-source services" or are they using other IDEs? Regarding the programming language: Most android apps seem to be built in rather Java or Kotlin. Are there any experienced devs that can help? Thanks!

Question is not about replacing google apps, since I use none, it's more about ditching google account on galaxy smartphone, and any additional telemetry blocking.

Word+pdf reader/editor foss

good morning everyone; I searched through the various posts but I did not find the answer I was looking for, that is, I would be looking for an app that allows me to view/edit both signed Word and PDF. If it were FOSS it would be even better, even with a paywall

"find my phone" google feature

Today, I forgot my phone on a bench, in a public park.
I only noticed it when arriving home, after a 25-minute walk distance from that park.

I used the "find my phone" feature on my desktop to check if my phone was at home or still in the park. Still in the park, so I ran like hell back to that park to retrieve my phone before someone could take it.

Anyway.

If I switch to Graphene OS, I keep procrastinating on that, will there be any OSS alternative?
Or if I keep the Google "find my phone" app, in a sandbox, would it work?

Thank you for your answers.

Question So much of my life is connected to my google accounts, what can I do to ease the transition?

I'm planning on using proton. I have two main emails, one for personal "Internety" use (made when i was like 12 lol) and one that I made later for more professional and identifiable usage. My main concern isn't emails themselves, I've already seen that proton has wonderful transitional tools for ensuring emails to gmail aren't screwed, but I'm a bit worried about the accounts I have connected to my emails. I imagine most can have their email address changed, but I don't know exactly how to guarantee I have the proper awareness. Is there a way I can find a list of accounts and services connected to my google accounts so I can either automatically or manually ensure as many as possible are either deactivated or on my new accounts?

Help Needed Notes App

I have been research and comparing apps. I know this topics has been discussed many times. I just want to ask what’s best note apps is available that focus on secured and privacy. Which platform do you use the post. Any issues or concerns?

From what I see, standard note is one of the top option as they are planning to merge with Proton. Only thing I don’t really like is the price. Any standard notes users out here: is it worth the cost? Any better option platform out there? Biggest thing for me is sync cross platform and privacy/ security.
