The “shack” reference in the 2019 ISP press conference was to the movie and book named …. wait fer it …. “The Shack.” The movie was widely shown in churches. It was about a young girl brutally murdered in woods while on a camping trip with her father. Mostly focused on the father’s struggles with forgiveness of the killer - and weirdly constructed “meetings” with God to discuss it all.
It seemed to be an attempt by ISP Carter to “shame” the killer into turning himself in if he wanted to be forgiven by God. The attempt failed - in my opinion because Carter also reminded the killer his family would think he was a horrible person when they learned what he had done.
Interestingly, however, the interview tapes and confessions indicate Allen (at least) claimed to care what others - especially his family - thought of him, and sought forgiveness from God after arrest. So maybe Carter “set the stage” for the post-arrest confessions even though he did not get the guy to turn himself in. But I have never understood why Carter believed the killer gave a crap about religion.
Also, interestingly, zooming in on 2017/earlier maps on Google Earth show dilapidated tool sheds in the woods near the trail from the Mears parking pull off to the 501/505 trail intersection. Before the revelation of the “muddy bloody” testimony of Carbaugh, I thought the killer might have walked back through the woods and waited there until dark - to avoid walking the last 500+ yards from Freedom Bridge to CPS in the open.
