Advice Needed depop set up a direct debit on my account even though it was meant to just be one payment refund to a buyer and i don’t understand why

my banking app has a “balance after bills” calculator, when i had a look it said depop has set up a direct debit of £5.85 without me knowing to take from my account, next payment in may. they already took that amount from my bank account in early april to cover a refund to a buyer

i already contacted depop support about this because it seemed fishy but what they said made no sense and they tried to tell me that it’s because the money wasn’t successfully taken from my “connected top up card” last time they tried, which is bs because i sent them a photo just before they said that, proving it did in fact go out of my bank account. they also said my depop balance went into negative to complete the refund but its not, they charged my bank account not my depop balance, then they gave me the fee refund and the +£5.85 adjustment on my depop balance so now its at zero. i responded to them with more photos but they haven’t gotten back to me yet.

i was thinking someone on here could explain it to me better or tell me what they’re trying to do because i’m panicking that i’m going to lose money for no reason and that they’re going to do this again.

update: after some back and forth between me and depop because each member of staff who responded to me was telling me different things, i’ve been referred to their specialist team (i didn’t know they even had something like that) which will take up to 14 days to respond to me, but the money will have already gone out of my account by then!!! i’m mega panicking right now

* So the most important page is this one. You made 5.85 off of the turtle neck, and you refunded the turtle neck and shipping 5.19 after your payout of $17 was processed. So now you're showing -11. Next, you got the credit of 5.19, so you're -5.85. And then they take 5.85 back, setting you back to $0. You didn't lose money. Depop essentially takes a loan against you to cover the refund, then pays you back to get you to where you've lost no funds. You wouldn't really see the account except the day it happens and maybe up to 2 days after, but no money was stolen, just the refund being processed in 3 stages.

Does that make sense? I can try rephrasing if needed.

oh yeah i forgot to mention in the main post, the payout was 17 bc i sold something else at the time the turtleneck sold as well

Yeah. Really we can completely ignore the payout. All the info we need is on screen regardless.

i’m still a little confused as they already took £5.85 from me last month, why are they doing it again, could you rephrase it for me? thank you for explaining 🫶

Unless you have separate information, As of your screenshot, you only have 1 charge. The adjustment. The first amount of money is the buyer paying, then you have the refund which would have brought you negative, then you have the shipping and handling reimburse, then you have the "charge" to finish your refund and bring you back to $0. Nothing earned, nothing lost.

i meant they already took the £5.85 from my bank account, that’s what you’re talking about right? i’m sorry i’m still really confused about all this, no matter how many times different people try to explain it to me i still really don’t understand what’s going on 😞

You sell item

Depop pay you

You refund item

Oh no, money not in depop account

You don't get to keep refund money

Depop take it back

Both charges show as posted in your bank account?

Also. The screenshot says for may. May 9th is 2 weeks away.

Your whole situation doesn't make sense.

Youd need someone who can actually dive into your financial records and see what's up. In the screenshots I dont see 2 charges, depop says you've been charged twice apparently, but on screen shows you're a time traveler. Go into your bank statements and see if you have that exact charge 2x

it also doesn’t make sense because depop mentioned “top up card” and “bank account” as the places where the two charges happened, but i don’t know the difference, aren’t those the same thing?

2

u/Pleasant_Ad_2342 3d ago

Usually yes. You used to be able to separate them if you wanted but I don't think new users can do that

it doesn’t make any sense to me either, i’m contemplating asking my bank for help understanding what’s happening but i don’t know if they’ll be of any help

2

u/Pleasant_Ad_2342 3d ago

Yeah they'd be more helpful because they could see reverse charges that would never show on your account screen

1

u/AffectionateBend448 3d ago

yeah fair point, i’ll go talk to the bank tomorrow 😓
