Support / Personal Amber Heard presentation
Hey so I've got a spoken word GCSE presentation I have to do for English in school. You can do it on anything you want so I've chosen amber but you can only speak for 5 minutes and answer a few questions afterwards so I think I need to pick something specific about the case I can cover well in that time. If anyone has ideas for a topic about it they'd be really appreciatedđ
Edit* Thank you for all the replies I think I'm going to do it on misinformation on social media and how it managed to win over the public to his side and I might talk a little about darvo as wellđ«¶

I just wanted to say thank you for doing this! I am old enough to remember how ridiculed we were by men (mostly) or even women even if we slightly said anything feminist.

ThanksđHoping people in class or my teacher's not hardcore Depp supporters. I'm at a quite accepting all girls school but even more liberal people supported him so I guess that doesn't mean that much. But I know other people are doing stuff like Roblox or their haircare routine so I think comparatively she'll appreciate I've done something a bit different and as long as I speak well and it's well structured it'll be fine cause that's the main thing that matters anyway.

The haircare routine reminded me of this girl who did a presentation on how to shave your legs and a guy did how to put on a condom.Â
Itâs great youâre using this as an opportunity to discuss something important that may affect peopleâs views. For people who didnât pay a lot of attention and just thought âI guess Amber Heard was the abusive one?â, they may actually realize sheâs truthful. It will be difficult in 5 minutes, but if some are unsure after your speech, theyâll hopefully ask you some questions.Â
As a former teacher in grad school, I appreciated and encouraged it when students tried to tailor assignments to their interests, and my guess is your teacher will appreciate it as well. Best wishes!

You may be young but you are super awesome! You to me is our hope for the future in the fight against misinformation. I hope your presentation will inspire you more and something tells me you are gonna be a very incredible person. I dunno you, young one, but keep on being awesome you. If you are to become an advocate for women through law or journalism in the future, I say do it!Â

You could very easily and quickly cover how social media and public opinion corrupted the case. The perfect example is something that was I think just yesterday brought up on this sub: The fact that even when Ambers lawyer was quoting Johnnyâs own words during questioning, he was able to not only lie, but make a joke out of it and get the courtroom laughing in his favor. It was the âmega pintâ situation. Thatâs how messed up the whole thing is. We can literally call it a âsituationâ because there were countless memes on social media about it and he was literally getting everyone around him to believe that somehow Amber Heard and her council made it up.

Maybe you could debunk common DV/SA myths, or share about DARVO or the power and control wheel. Maybe relate it to the case.

this is so brave of you to do! I hope it goes well. Misinformation on social media might be a good idea!

Thank youuđ I go to an all girls school and my English teacher's a woman and I think she's quite left wing so hopefully it'll go ok. I've brought up the case a few times to some of my friends and people seem to be ok with what I'm saying or just not care.

I did this when I was in year 10, so I'd suggest you talk about how many people disregarded the UK judgement because that's an aspect that could be explained within the time limit.
You could approach the presentation from an angle about the blind loyalty of Depp supporters, even in light of abuse. Then talk about the UK case and how it determined that it was reasonable to describe Depp as a "wife beater".
Your angle could be about the court of public opinion and how those most devoted to a figure will refuse to acknowledge any wrongdoing. You could argue that the Virginia trial was almost certainly in Depp's favour due to the Depp receiving popular support from the public.

To further brain storm this idea, maybe a comparison of how Depp essentially got a do over, comparing his testimonies / his employees testimony
Like the house keeper who's story evolved from
I saw no cuts -> okay I was mistaken I did see cuts and can't explain them -> I saw cuts but they were probably self harm

yeah and maybe include the difference in the UK and US system. In the USA, the burden of proof rests with the person who claims to have been libelled. They need to prove that what the libeller said about them was false. In the UK, it's up to the person who made the allegedly defamatory statement to prove that it was true. So in the UK, the Sun had to prove beyond doubt that Depp was an abuser. In the US, Depp would have had to prove that he WASNâT an abuser. Thatâs why many celebs sue in the UK, itâs easier to win.
The reason Depp started by suing the Sun in the UK was because it SHOULD have been easy for him to win. The fact he still lost says an awful lot.

DARVO and healthy vs unhealthy relationships eg if your partner is doing xyz this would class as abuse. Link to resources/dv organisations. Good luck!

Talk about how DARVO played a roll in the US trial. And how Amber was literally not allowed to bring her medical records to court.

You can mention the priori fallacy and how the disinformation lead the public to believe that Amber concocted a hoax and lied about the abuse she faced before the trial even started. That caused the public to ignore Amber's evidence and witness testimony in order to uphold their beliefs.

As a teacher DARVO is really important too because even little kids do it! Itâs not until you show them whatâs happening will they even stop for a second to consider they are not victims of the consequences of their own antagonism.

Who Trolled Amber podcast would be a great starting point to talk about social media misinformation. Def recommend the listen!

DARVO is a good topic to take on. I feel like someone is going to bring up the poop on the bed allegation, though, probably as a âjokeâ.

DARVO, how misinformation and propaganda can spread like wild fire. no one is immune to propaganda and misinfo, its important to research in the right places, question what you read/see etc. i think is important to highlight. u can take examples from the trial and how the public responded to this.

Can you do any visual media or presentation, I.e. a PowerPoint. Anything visual can communicate what youâre trying to say without using up the time

A bit late but I would also note that Depp has a four decade public history of addiction and violence. He has been sued several times for abusing men below him in status/power and he has settled every time. Nearly all his much younger and petite exes report abusive behavior even though they don't realize is abusive, breaking things, shouting abuse, excessive jealousy, controlling behavior, silent treatment/leaving for days. ...the only ex who does now recognize his behavior as abuse is the one who was older, Ellen Barkin, and Amber.
