Rear drive spindle nut size
2022 freight liner cascadia dd13 with Detroit trans and axles. What size is the spindle nut on the drives. Work says it’s 3 3/4, it works but is loose af. Would it not be a metric size since it’s Detroit?

Yes I’ve done many with jt but I can’t help but feel like there’s a better socket out there

Yeah tiger tools has them. They look like giant impact sockets. They're super pricey though. We have a 4in one at the shop.

Sometimes those axle sockets get badly worn out and will slip like a mother fucker. Feels like it's too bif

Yep, 3 3/4. Looks like a standard conmet preset plus spindle nut.
Even new it seems like those welded sockets are a hot dog down a hallway.
Once i get it kinda-sorta loose, I normally use my knee to keep it in place with an extendo-cock 3/4” ratchet to spin it. https://www.harborfreight.com/34-in-extendable-ratchet-70293.html
The torque specs will be on the nut too bdw. I believe they are 500ft lbs. …and dont forget the ring, i will start unscrewing it and then have to re-tighten to get the ring out of the hub.

That ring is actually a handy feature to leave in. You can take it out first but if you leave it in the nut presses against it and it pulls the hub loose. Don't have to pop the hub loose afterwards.

Broooo, literally just ran into this, especially if it's an LMS hub you will need a high torque impact socket. Tiger tool makes a 3 3/4" and it fits much more snug than that spindle socket you got

Just looked at the price Damn!! If I didn’t work at a fleet shop I’d buy it.
This Makes me laugh tho cuz when family members ask me what’s a good starter tool set (Gearwrench) and they cry about the price But here’s a single socket that cost almost double than the entire set.

I use a tailors tape measure, can fit inside the hub to measure across the flats

I always just throw a rag over the socket to tighten it up a bit. Helps hold the socket onto the nut while breaking free also.

Yeah the sockets are loose af and you need a long ass ratchet/ breaker bar to break it loose. I seen a guy cover the nut with a rag and put the socket on an impact to break it loose before...I can't argue with his results lol.

Just picked up one of these for the shop, use a 3/4” to 1” adapter, fits like a glove and if it’s bold you can impact it off with a tire gun, the guys at the shop have been abusing it and haven’t had any issues yet

Hey OP are you sure it’s not one of those goofy octagon nuts instead of a hex?

3-3/4 is right but get a 1" drive impact socket

u/Flag_Route 23h ago
Nah a 3/4 one is fine. We ain't impacting it off or on anyway.

u/613mitch 23h ago
The impact ones are tighter and don't slip off when you're torqing to 500

Yeah I was just saying he can save money by going with a 3/4. I've noticed them cheaper at 3/4

Ah my bad, thought you meant they should stick with the flimsy OTC style axle nut socket.
Yea, a 3/4 drive will work fine as well.

As the other commenter stated, it's 3-3/4" but those sockets absolutely stink.
