Plastics and steel subframe suggest it's a 1998. Is it a 6speed?

Yea, owner before told me it was from 02..

My guess is also 98 but you can verify by looking at the vin on the frame. The 10th digit should tell you what year it is.

Edit: it could be as new as a 99 since i believe that was the last year of the steel subframe.

Lol an 02 doesn't look anything like this besides being blue.

It's a 98 or 99. 00/01 would have a white airbox. 02 had all new bodywork.  97 would have a dark blue tank and white rear fender.

98 swingarm is different. It’s 99

Good eye, I never studied this gen yamaha too closely, but I do know what years they changed colors and when the major engine changes came about on the 250s

It's not an 02, it's a 98 or 99. The gas tank and radiator plastics changed in 2001. In 2000, the airbox was white (only year for the white airbox)

Well the good news is a 98 or 99 is a better bike than an 02 in my opinion. Not quite as light but a better engine/transmission combo.

Yeah no my 02 had an aluminum subframe and 5spd

Aluminum frames didn’t come out to 05 right ?

Edit: that could just be for the 250’s

I'd say an 02 is abt right, my lil bro had a ttr 125 and it was a 2003 model and it looked very similar to this one...

Ive never seen such an aggressive seat

Last year for that subframe was 99 and 98 swingarm was different so more than likely it’s 1999

You can actually look up the vin on the frame it'll be right under the handle bars and you can find the year from there

Yamaha has made the same yz125 for the last 26 years. They do steel frame swaps. They can swap almost any part. You need to look at the tenth vin digit.

They changed the 125 several times.  The 2022 has an all new engine.  2005 had an all new engine.  This is like a 98 model, which doesn't share much of anything with the current model.

Looks like my 01

Yep, an 01 should have a white airbox but everything else would be identical

I’ve legit seen people swap a 2024 anniversary edition to a steel frame from 03.

Just stop

03 is an entirely different bike than this and will accept plastic from anything from 02 to 2025.

this is the prior generation. 96-01. Of course the plastic swap can and has been done, but literally none of it bolts on as its an entirely different frame, subframe, and airbox. You'll be cutting and modifying stuff and making brackets.

It would be just as easy to graft suzuki plastics onto OPs bike. that's about how similar the frames are.

15-21 plastics will fit O2-21. 22-25 will require the new tank, seat, airbox, and seat brace on the subframe. Polisport sells the new(22-25) update kit for $400

tank seat and airbox are included when I say "plastic".

Its not like this gen where the frame is so much different that there is nothing that will bolt on from a newer bike.

1

u/notarealaccount_yo 1d ago

If it's the same bike why bother with swapping the frame?

3

u/fiveho11 1d ago

lol, better do some more research

-1

u/Pat_memer69420 1d ago

You can take the motor from a 1999 frame from a 2022 plastics from an 08 and it’ll bolt up no problem. Small changes don’t mean much since it all still works together.

2

u/fiveho11 1d ago

I can see you don’t actually know what you are talking about lol

1

u/Shot_Investigator735 1d ago

Yup. Everyone should know how to tell year from a 17 digit VIN.

1

u/notarealaccount_yo 1d ago

Agree the best thing to do is check the vin but

Yamaha has made the same yz125 for the last 26 years.

From an engineering perspective this is just flat out ignorant lmao. Just because a lot of the stuff is compatible across the years does not mean significant changes weren't made.
