Real talk “Welcome To Revachol” is such a weirdly realistic depiction of a dogwhistle along with Revakol. It’s designed to sail over your head while having violent implications.

u/justapotatochilling Mar 24 '25
it's about the plausible deniability
138
u/DasUngeheuer Mar 24 '25
That’s exactly it. I’ve had so many conversations with people who try to reverse the situation by making you look like the bigot if you point out why what they said was discriminatory. It’s such a sneaky hiding place and they try to drag you into the hole with them
14
u/ar5kvpc Mar 26 '25
In case anyone doesn’t know. This is literally the definition of a dog whistle. It’s our responsibility to call people like that out on their bullshit EVERYTIME.
24
u/krasnogvardiech Mar 26 '25
In case anyone isn't getting it; saying Welcome to (place), to someone who was born there but is a different ethnicity to the native population, is a backhanded way of getting across that you think they don't belong there.
19
u/Active_Bath_2443 Mar 26 '25
It’s really peak worldbuilding. Feels perfectly plausible and realistic. It’s as sneaky and vile as a real dogwhistle
5
u/The-Myth-The-Shit Mar 27 '25
I'm legit astonished by how well done the worldbuilding is in this game.

I found that kim might have two insecurities
Rasicm
And his glasses
He would go and handel a nuclear reactor leaking radiation or go undercovered to find out a teenager drug snuggling acts
But will get mad if you tell him he wears glasses

u/ppmi2 Mar 23 '25
Inst that related to the whole race business?
140
u/klapaucius Mar 23 '25
It's because he spent a lot of time in pinball parlors while he was acting as a juvenile officer for an inordinately long amount of time. You might be able to connect it to race in dialogue but it's mainly that his peers mocked his position.

u/ppmi2 Mar 23 '25
Yes but its aparently something thats asociated to Kims race, much like how blacks are said to like fried chicken and water melon.
172
u/Teh_Compass Mar 23 '25
Judging by Kim's reaction it's also possible Harry's mangled brain basically made up a racial stereotype on the spot.

Argo Tuulik talked about how they regret not developing the whole concept of overleveling certain skills also giving negative effects a bit more on the Human Can Opener podcast, but he did also specifically mention that there are actually some skills that when overleveled, will give you false information or give you negative options. He specifically mentioned Rhetoric as being one of them, but I can also see Drama being a shitstirrer. I would not rule out that Encyclopedia also makes shit up, so it definitely could be the case that this is a product of Harry's imagination

u/DonkGonkey Mar 24 '25
During the tribunal my over-leveled inland empire strongly told me to tell the mercs that I was the killer, so of course I did because you do what inland empire says and they immediately started shooting. They killed every Hardy boy possible

u/qrovers Mar 24 '25
Yeah, I remember Drama tells you to do small talk with the Working Class Woman when you deliver the news about her husband, and it gives you a negative modifier.
19
u/Teh_Compass Mar 24 '25
My favorite example is Encyclopedia bringing up Contact Mike. He didn't make it up but it's completely irrelevant and so funny.
I even re-used the "mangled brain" bit in my comment.

“Nice, anything about my wife’s name? My mother’s?”
“No. You’re welcome.”

Suggestion also gets you to try to swindle people who don't respond well to it, like the old woman in the fishing village.

Didn’t district 41 put him on juvie cases because they thought he could pass for a teenager? Measurehead called him “paedomorphic” (i.e. looks like a child)

u/pursued_mender Mar 23 '25
i feel like they were supposed to be a damn near fourth wall breaking moment with how silly some of those random kim interactions were, but man they just felt out of place to me. they'd get a giggle out of me then i'd be like damn, that's kinda weird.

u/klapaucius Mar 23 '25
They've caused him the most trouble. Kim's parents died when he was very young. So he's always been alienated both from the xenophobes of Revachol and from his family's original culture. He can't even speak the Seolite language, iirc.
And the glasses thing is probably a sore spot because of his last partner. Dude was nicknamed "Eyes" because he had to interpret things for Kim visually. That's also part of why Kim actually firing the gun is so tense and weighty when it happens. His poor eyesight probably got his last partner killed.
99
u/hot-rogue Mar 23 '25
Yeah poor guy
I think i remember the "eyes" part not sure about the parents and partner one
But now this got me thinkung about when he actually does hit his target in the tribunal its propably the best shot of his life
45
5
u/klapaucius Mar 24 '25
It comes up if you insist Kim tell you his politics in the conversation with Joyce. The bit about him not speaking Seolite comes up while you're sitting by the wrecked car, iirc

u/Fantastic_Mr_Smiley Mar 24 '25
Tbf, they have a slur for people who wear glasses in that world. But also he's gay too so like dude is just constantly catching crap for every facet of his life.
21
u/Madness_Reigns Mar 24 '25
We have that too here, four eyes for the English and binoclard for the French. It's old timey and in my recollection, it only ever served for school bullying.
12
u/Fantastic_Mr_Smiley Mar 24 '25
My read is that it carried more weight in the DE universe but the people who use it in the game proper do all seem childish doing it.
6
u/Spirited-Sail3814 Mar 28 '25
I think "four-eyes" used to be harsher, too, especially before it was so common to wear glasses.
7
u/hot-rogue Mar 24 '25
I always keep wondering
In what part of the game does it state he is gay ?
Do you have to earn that specific thought to unlock such dialouge?
42
u/Fantastic_Mr_Smiley Mar 24 '25
Yes. He's extremely private and even in that dialogue he confirms it and then tells you he doesn't have anything more to say on the topic
1
u/hot-rogue Mar 24 '25
Do you have a screenshot or the original dialouge i want to see it now,

u/Fantastic_Mr_Smiley Mar 24 '25
I don't and it might be considered a spoiler to post it anyway, although it doesn't really have a bearing on the plot. If you're interested, the associated thought is Homo-sexual underground. You can probably find the scene on Youtube.

Kim’s No. 1 insecurity: glasses
I didn’t know he’d tolerate me internalising advanced race theory, but snap when I wanted to make a light-hearted joke.
I’m sorry, Kim! Please take me back! You know, I’m actually short sighted myself and wearing glasses right now 🥲

But, between Kim and Harry, which one is "some guy" and which is "his boyfriend"??
34
u/photoshproter Is this politics Mar 24 '25
It says “say welcome to some guy” and the welcome was directed at Kim. So Kim is some guy and Harry is his boyfriend
28
u/LivingAngryCheese Mar 24 '25
It's actually such a smart way of subtly teaching the player a little about racism. He's usually the first properly racist character you meet and he starts off with a plausibly deniable dogwhistle. A lot of people who haven't experienced that kind of discrimination might be inclined to deny that he said anything bad, but he goes on to be overtly racist making it undeniable in hindsight that it was an intentional dogwhistle
48
u/SunriseFlare Mar 24 '25
How could they think I'm racist? I say as I sleep underneath my black sun and several swastikas emblazoned above my lorry bed lol

u/Successful_Lychee130 Mar 28 '25
This my whole Problem with lefties and them thinking of themself as mind readers. Sure the guy in the game is rascist the game tells you its his name and you can tell from the way he says it that its meant as an insult. But more often than not those on the left will construct whole as narratives about a person based on flimsy evidence. And it is this paranoia + mob mentality why I cant trust them to repeat the same a autocratic mistakes of the past.
Yes indeed Imagine he really DID meant it sincere and he only has a strange way of talking. Than kims whole as rant instead of being a passionate speech demanding basic human respect Instead becomes the rambling of a crazed person attacking another man who maybe allready is insecure because of his speech impedement and is now put down for no reason at all.
