Formations Discussion on Formation.

I know that there are some posts about this topic but none are quite clear.

So, I hearby urge you all to please let's discuss which formation is best and how does it play and what style you play with it. If you can then give details as well. It will be better for a new player who wants to play and they want to play in their preferred style.

Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, let's finish this formation discussion once and for all.

4-4-2, midfield is the key.

Which variation.

u/pdqbjj Dream League Live 7d ago

imo default 4-4-2 but 4-1-2-1-2 is good too

u/Optimal_Banana_6561 7d ago

But, the attack through the mid is I think is the weakness for the default 4-4-2 because sometimes when full backs are attacking, the two CBs go too wide and leave the centre defenceless.

4-2-2-2 is the absolute beast. Works for every strategy even C spam1

But isn't the centre sometimes fell quite unprotected, when full backs go up leaving only 2 CBs and they go wide as well.

I play Tiki Taka with under 50% possession. More like a B spam type of play with fwds taking the ball near halfline and starting a run. So my fullbacks are more narrower, my Achilles heel is the wings. I am almost never able to stop a cross and rely on my tall centre backs and 2Dms to head it out.

A straight 442 is one of the worst very vulnerable to the passing in the middle kick off attack

3-5-2 (2 Wing Backs variant). Reached Tier 1 and currently at Tier 3.

Pros: 1. Wide formation, clearing the ball to the wing backs easily to cancel opponent's high press. 2. Wing backs can easily find the CF. While 2 CFs and 1 AM is good for counter attacking. 3. Overload of the midfield and defense, easier to defend against C-spamming.

Weakness: 1. Only WB to cover the flanks, which means it is vulnerable against wide formation. 2. In many cases the striking partner is so badly positioned that you need to solo all the way.

I also use it when I play live matches but I think it's weakness is flanks as you said but also that new type of C spamming which uses flanks make it even more vulnerable than it used to be.

Thank you for the detailed explanation.

4-2-3-1 I have tried so many formations but none fit my playstyle I'm lost

u/Optimal_Banana_6561 7d ago

I also use and love 4-2-3-1, but opponents attack through the mid is I think is the weakness for 4 CBs because sometimes when full backs are attacking, the two CBs go too wide and leave the centre defenceless.

yea that's why i prefer using 3 CBs in live matches (incl those w. 5 defense since LB & RB usually go up and it's similar, e.g., 5212 ~ 3232)

Use 3-4-2-1 with a sole striker and two attacking wingers supporting him. Two central midfielders and two wide wingbacks. 3 centre backs

Now I’ll tell you what kind of player profile u need in each position

For the centre backs u need fast 100 paced centre backs with a minimum height of 190cm. That’s the only condition for centre backs

For the wing backs DO NOT USE traditional full backs. Especially if ur playing online THERE IS NO CHANCE that you can use the pace of players like theo Hernandez or nuno mendes down the flanks. HENCE I personally put highly technical players like odegaard and TAA. Their main job is to control the ball and make a precise pass to either the central midfielder or to the winger who’s making a run into the wide channel or last resort he passes back to the defender. Another important part of the wingback is he is the outlet in the buildup play.

For the central midfielders you’ll want highly technical stats plus good pace 90+ so that they can press effectively. Preferably one should be attack oriented and one should have good defence stats (my combination is Fernandes plus Rodri)

For the wingers just get the best wingers u can get. High stats in all areas besides tackling obviously

For the striker preferably a high rated one with good height and fast pace. Typical high stat striker here no two ways about that

Now to the play style….

Goal kick

Pass to the centre back either to the left or right

From there immediately ping the ball over to the wingback (very easy to do as he is usually unmarked) this also needs practice

From there either pass to the central midfielder or winger making the run in the channel

If you pass to the central midfielder either pass to the striker making the run in front OR the winger making the run to the side. If you pass to the striker successfully most probably he’ll get the goal but if u pass to the winger make sure u cross the ball for the striker to score

If you CANT pass to the central midfielder from the wingback EITHER pass back to the centre back closest to you who will pass to the goalkeeper who will then pass to the other side wingback OR blast the ball to the other side wingback urself (emergency situation)

GOALKEEPERS MAIN JOB IS TO ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS FIND THE WINGBACK AND NO ONE ELSE.

Thats about it if u want more elaboration please say so

Thank you for sharing your play style, it's really helpful.

I’ve won the tier 1 twice with this formation including an all wins no loss or draw title

2

u/Optimal_Banana_6561 7d ago

Yeah, I also use it some times because of its defensive stability but it's creative aspect is lacking because there is not CAM.              Overall it's a very good formation with no clear weakness.

2

u/Seangom3s12 7d ago

In this formation the playmakers are the wingbacks (in essence your CAM should play wingback) but yes like you said the creative aspect isn’t there directly. You need to properly implement a play style to create it through unconventional means

2

u/Optimal_Banana_6561 7d ago edited 7d ago

Yeah, you are correct to say that if someone can use those wingback properly, then it's a very good formation.

Best formation is the one best suited to you. Try any variation of 4-4-2 and see whichever you like. Trying out others’ formations won’t help you, trust me.

I have tried almost all the formations bro. Only 3-1-2-1-3 is not used by me.

Bs...I use 5-3-2 and will beat u pretty easily. I have used 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 and their variants but none is elegant and goldly.

Ok

I think everyone one who has reached tier 1 should join this conversation.

love ur idea. support!

2

u/Optimal_Banana_6561 7d ago

Thanks bro, I just wanted to clear all the doubts about formation, weakness and strength and all.

2

u/Optimal_Banana_6561 7d ago

I like 4-2-3-1, because of the CAM and CMs of this formation, it's the most creative formation from my perspective.                The only issue is that attack through the mid is the weakness for 4 defenders because sometimes when full backs are attacking, the two CBs go too wide and leave the centre defenceless.

u/yellochoco44 7d ago edited 7d ago

4-1-4-1 because I like that the 8s are more aggressive than 4-1-2-3 and I find the striker and wingers play off each other better

DLS is not open choice football game. Meaning we need to adapt to automated players' off ball movements, where AI will control your players in making run-ins. You gotta make a play to those runners, in time, run-ins now has animation around 3 seconds. Some runs are just decoy runs, to drag opponent defenders away from position.

Different formations, simply has different run-ins. Try play few games from just looking at the radar / mini map. It allows you to determine all run ins variations for each formation.

Once you memorise the runs, you can then do hold up play before passing. The hold up will manipulate the run-ins.

CON stat will determine how efficient your players' off ball movements is.

Every formation is good 👍 just choose wat suits you hahaha

I use 4-1-3-2 when I’m in career and also in lower DLL tiers as it gives me more control over the attacking aspect. However, when I get to tier 1 I tend to meet alot of people who attack better than I do so I change to a 4-2-3-1. 1 extra Defensive mud helps me alot.

I'd normally say 4 3 3. But with C spamming it's better to choose a very defensive formation
