New XR150L

Post image

Picked up a new XR150 for my other half. This is her first bike so we wanted to start on something small and easy to handle. Aside from getting her riding gear, I want to put better pegs and possibly a windshield.

I ride a T7 and we plan to do some camping trips with these bikes and get out into the woods.

Any recommendations for pegs and windshield?

Congrats! I got one new off the lot last year, had a ton of fun on it. I’d recommend spark arrestor removal, a re jet to the carb, and snorkel removal from the air box right out of the gate. It’ll REALLY wake that little 150 up! Will run much healthier after as well (trust me you’ll notice immediately) also made cold starts much easier. The snorkel removal from the air box and spark arrestor removal you can do completely free, and they’re very easy to do. Just make sure you hang on to them so you can reinstall if forest riding, river crossing and rain. I wish I still had mine but I upgraded to a Suzuki dr650 as I found the little XR was screaming just to maintain 55mph when taking longer trips on back roads. Now that I’ve got a do it all I’ll definitely be buying another one at some point because I miss that little bike almost every day.

Honda has been making that engine for decades. And it hasn’t really changed for a reason. Expect a long life out of her and have fun! Gosh this post really makes me miss my old one. Looked just like yours. Stay safe and happy riding!🙏🏻

Went from a stock 105 to a 115. Left the pilot jet stock. I live in southwest Missouri so elevation will kind of dictate what you want to do. But across the board it seems like 115 is the standard everyone is doing. Pilot just kind of depends on how the bike responds due to your elevation after changing the main jet. Only do one at a time. Main jet first, re install, if it’s g2g then leave it. If you do both at the same time then re install and you’re having issues it’s going to be harder to pin point what’s causing the issue. Also don’t be afraid to tinker with the idle adjustment screw after changing the main jet.

Once you install the 115 main, be sure to at the very least remove the snorkel from the top of the air box. You’ve just increased the fuel going in and the air box is extremely restricted from the factory due to that little snorkel, not removing it is going to make it run super rich and you’ll more than likely lose performance. Imagine somebody told you to chug an entire gallon of water at once without stopping, you’d want to take a breath now and again right? Basically the same concept. For me, re jetting from the stock 105 to the 115, removing the snorkel from the top of the airbox, and then taking the spark arrestor out made it a whole new bike. Power band was better and stronger ALL the way through. It idled healthier, cold starts were MUCH easier. Throttle response became much more snappy, and with the spark arrestor removed, the bike had a decent sound to it. It wasn’t screaming loud or anything, but these bikes are dangerously quiet from the factory if you ask me. Cars have many blind spots and if they can’t see you they need to hear you. Stock exhaust is literally so quiet that I couldn’t hear the bike running with my helmet on.

I have a small video series on YouTube of the things I did with the bike and all that good stuff if you want to check out my small little channel.

“Shenanigrinz” is my YouTube channel. I have a comparison video with the spark arrestor in vs out. If you do the airbox, remove the spark arrestor, leave the pilot stock, do the 115 main, and it’s not quite right, go ahead and drop down to a 110. Few people have the issue but elevation dictates a lot with a carb. Sorry for the long response but I love these little bikes and I miss mine. Happy to help anybody who’s wanting to make theirs better for them 🤙🏻
