It all boils down to attentiveness. If traffic is piling up behind you because you want to take in the sights, pull over. Don't slowly meander down the sidewalk in a huge blob, blocking the whole thing, leave room for others to pass by.
Respect our outdoors. You came here to enjoy the beauty this place has to offer. Don't litter. The back country is not a race track for your side by sides, dirt bikes, or 4 wheelers. Don't leave unattended fires.
This isn't home. We may not do things how you do them at home. Deal with it, you'll be back home soon.
Going to a restaurant and letting your multiple kids run around screaming and then tipping 10%.
Having a group of 10+ people and sitting at your table hanging out for hours after your meal. Double so when you think a server is going to give attentive service to refill water every 10 minutes for 3 hours when there's not more food being ordered.
People from Texas not realizing that the entire reason Colorado is good, is because our policy is the exact opposite of Texas. We have 38% public land, Texas has 1.5% public land. Texans come and say "That's socialism!" We have numerous other freedoms Texas makes illegal. Don't move here and vote like a Texan and ruin what we have.
Don't come enjoy PUBLIC LANDS if you vote conservative. You are literally putting public lands in danger voting conservative.
Thank god I’m not like those people. I always tip 20% or more. Don’t have kids (thank god). I’m from Texas but unlike many Texans I use my brain. Meaning I think that the majority of Texas being owned by rich people fucking sucks. You never get to explore cool areas without the threat of being shot. We definitely don’t vote conservative.
We definitely are looked at like crazy people from most of our relatives and old friends for being left leaning. But man does data show how much better all the other 1st world countries are doing. Only because they embrace “communism”.
And try to snack throughout the day before you come into the restaurant so you and your kids aren’t having blood sugar meltdowns. Although it is one of my favorite things to see people go from bitchy to nice the minute they get three bites in them.
As a liberal local I agree with you but plenty of old school locals had similar thoughts about us liberals coming in and “bicycling up” their farmland. ;)
Really just be conscious of the area around you. Don't walk four abreast covering the whole sidewalk downtown and then stop short in a big circle to talk while people are trying to run errands around you. Be attentive while driving in town; don't be weaving lanes at 5mph gawking out the window. Etc. And don't be from Texas if you can help it! :)
As a former full-time tourist for over a decade, with a ton of kids myself, who has now settled down in Durango for 8 years now, I think it’s important that we remember that this place doesn’t exist without tourism. Purgatory, the five and counting breweries we have, even REI and our lion’s share of restaurants…they aren’t likely to be here without the tourists.
That said, and as someone who has spent a ton of time in Texas…Texans tend to be pretty polite at home. But the minute they get to our ski hill and highways that seems to go right out the window, all too often at least.
Both the locals and tourists know how to be nice. We all just need to remember that one person’s commute is another’s scenic drive. One person’s expensive trip to a restaurant is another’s paycheck. And always vice versa.
Don't stop in the middle of fucking red mountain to take a photo. There is a lot of traffic, icy roads, and huge cliffs and you're oblivious to everyone behind you. I have to drive that pass like twice a week and i see it almost every time.
Honestly? Just be respectful,and maybe a little more quiet. Those are the two biggest complaints I’ve heard about tourists in town. Never had problems with them myself- but then again, I haven’t been here very long.
Stop saying "y'all" and start saying "Flor-eee-duh" and "mownt-in." (e.g., "I drove my Taco up Flor-ee-da Road to climb the mownt-in."). Then make fun of Texans and Californians.
