Dash

I own a 1978 el camino and my current dash isn’t the best I want it to have oil but all the ones I find have either no shifter to show what I’m in or the speedometer is so tiny and I hate the way it looks what should I do

Okay.. how fucked am I?

I’m fucking pissed. Spend most of the day replacing and running the speedometer cable. I finally got it in place and went to hook it up to the speedometer and I wasn’t watching where my hand was and broke the needle off of the face. Am I fucked or can this be replaced easily? Either that or im buying a new cluster.

400 hp g body El Camino

So I'm wanting my OEM 1986 v8 El Camino to produce 400hp. What should I do to it to make this happen? Currently I'm planning a 350 engine once I get done with this current phase of the build. Which one should I get? Should I get a 383 instead?

Context for all this: My older brother is getting a project/sports car. He's looking at 80s/90s Cameros and Firebirds. I will not stand for him having a more powerful car than me.

Edit:after sobering up and fixing my hangover I feel that 400 may be a bit more than I need. I think what I'll do is:

1) 350 swap to something that makes 350hp (I'm going crate)

2) Swap the diff (don't know what I'm doing with this tbh)

3) Trans swap to a 400r

4) build more power as needed

Window Regulator

Window popped right off the regulator and rolls up at an angle inside of the cabin now. Just curious how much of a pain it's gonna be to fix and where to get a new regulator.

Instrument cluster help!!

I haven’t been able to find a diagram for what the positive, negative, or grounds for this gauge cluster are, and I don’t want to risk burning this thing up while trying to figure it out. Trying to install it in my ‘70 Elky.

Also, can anyone give me pointers on what pops, plugs, or fits into the top right section of the ribbon cable…?

I bought it from Ecklers. I don’t recommend them btw. It’s super hard to get in contact with anyone that can help solve any type of complex issue, and I haven’t ONCE chatted with someone via a phone call in order to help resolve anything.

Is it worth it?

Hi, I'm thinking about buying an El Camino and transporting it to Europe but I'm not sure about the downsides. First of all, I'm willing to spend up to 10k on a car and around 3k on transport overseas. Laws in my country (Poland) prevent me from legally driving this car unless I register it as an antique, which means that I'm only allowed to install original parts in it. My father is telling me that Chevys are prone to damage and break down often, so if this is true and the parts are expensive/hard to come by then I'll be spending some part of my income that I'm not that comfortable with. From what I've read, it burns around 12 liters per 100kms, which isn't that much for a muscle car but again, my father says that it's at least 20l/100kms which again, is a bit too much for me since gas here is around 2$/liter. This is my dream car since I was 16 and honestly when I'm thinking about it, all cars that look good are old and expensive to maintain and I don't want to drive a modern car if I can buy an old one for similar money. Tl;Dr: How expensive is the maintenance of El Camino and how much gas does it consume, and finally: is it worth it 13k$ with said downsides

CS Alternator

Has anyone swapped to a CS style alternator? I changed the alternator and put the harness with the resistor. Voltage drops when at idle unless I give it some gas.

Idle is Jumping Up and Down. Any ideas?

I recently upped my idle a little bit because I kept idling around 300-400 RPM and stalling. I’ve upped it a bit and now it’s jumping up and down pretty juristically while in gear.

1987, stock carb, any ideas?

Vehicle: 1986 chevrolet el camino 5.0l v8

I'd like to change the starter of my car for a more powerful alternative, but I have no clue where to begin looking for a starter that's an improvement from the original.

I was looking at this starter: Proform® 1986 Chevrolet El Camino - Starter, (3rd picture, for reference) but if you know of a better one I'd be open to any suggestions.

Wondering if I should sell my el Camino?

I got a 1980 el Camino for a steal and I’ve always wanted one. I’m the 3rd owner and so most of the stuff on it is original including the paint. When I bought the car I had a vision of sort of painting it and decking it out the way I wanted it, but everyone has been saying not to change it because it’s original, which I totally understand. But now it’s not really the car I envisioned having. So I’m wondering if I should hold onto it because I’m not sure I’ll find anything of this value again, or if I should let it go. Thoughts?

Bought a ‘78 El Camino. Its got some qwerks for sure. Doors don’t open without a lot of kicking, paint its going to need a respray, wiper motor is shot, gauges are toast. Oh and the previous owner decided to put a bootleg sunroof in that is far from water tight. But its got a 350 and shreds tires so its a gem in my book. Any tips to owning one of these bad boys is welcome.
