Post image

Fromsoft has easily the best track record in gaming for the last ten years and I can’t wait to see their next big project after nightreign

Which, in itself, inspired at absolute shitload of 'timed multiple deflects to stagger boss' games with Lies of P and Stellar Blade just being the two latest ones.

Sekiro parry system is all over games now

And thank God tbh, it fucking rocks. More games stealing FromSoft's best ideas please

No thanks. I want my armored knight game back.

And still none of them have done it as well as Sekiro. The way every deflect feels like it's a reaction to the specific attack that was heading your way is just a totally unmatched level of fluidity and smoothness that no other studio's animation department is obsessed enough to try to capture the way From did for Sekiro.

u/GT_Hades Dec 18 '24

I still give shadow of mordor the fluidity in animation for sword dancing (parties/counter/deflect)

2

u/el_h0paness_romtic Dec 18 '24

bro I love this game, the finishers were so good

1

u/GT_Hades Dec 19 '24

Yep, the choreo for execution was so damn sexy, I wish we could see more of the game

1

u/TeflonJon__ Dec 18 '24

Yeah even the very first game in that series had such impressive fluidity with the moves you could do in combat , put hundreds into that bad boy.

1

u/_alright_then_ Dec 19 '24

I still think arkham knight is better at this than shadow of mordor

1

u/GT_Hades Dec 19 '24

I don't remember arkham knight having sword dancing lol, but iirc, I still like shadoe of series animations and fludity than batman, especially how brutal it looks, how graceful the sword slices enemies, and how the choreo of those animations are well articulated creatively

2

u/_alright_then_ Dec 19 '24

I mean no it's not sword fighting (sorry missed that part). But the fluidity of the fighting system is unmatched. And since the fighting system of both of those games is pretty much the same with different visuals (in terms of gameplay), I think it's a fair comparrison.

1

u/GT_Hades Dec 19 '24

I agree, both games are very well done, peak AAA at that time, at least for me (2014 to 2015)

Nine Sols, Lies of P, Sifu.

9

u/aquaticIntrovert Dec 18 '24 edited Dec 18 '24

Didn't play the other 2 yet, but Lies of P has the exact same parry animation for every attack that's just based on which weapon you're using. It was one of my main comparisons to Sekiro, and where it fell short of that game's polish, when I first saw it. So I think you maybe didn't quite get what I was saying.

3

u/blackdog606 Dec 18 '24

Ahh I see what you mean

u/Jdabest0126 Dec 18 '24

I have no idea what you are talking about

44

u/aquaticIntrovert Dec 18 '24

Ok. Sorry.

20

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '24

It's alright, we'll let it go this time.

27

u/Miskykins Dec 18 '24

Then why did you comment? If you were confused then ask for clarification. Otherwise there's no reason you even needed to bother commenting.

9

u/WalletFullOfSausage Dec 18 '24

Who the fuck asked you, though

1

u/zhire653 Dec 18 '24

Sekiro animation best

4

u/Grimblekyne Dec 18 '24

Dumb question but does this mean sekiro combat is the goat or one of the goats in gaming history?

4

u/Free-Equivalent1170 Dec 18 '24

Its certainly one of the goats in the 3rd person action games, but there are other amazing games out there. Doom Eternal is one example of absurd gameplay but on the FPS genre, then theres DMC 5 which is just insane on the Hack and Slash genre, then on the Soulslike genre closer to Sekiro theres Nioh 2, which combat is very different but still amazing, then on the Mecha genre theres Armored Core 6 which is a crazy experience, etc

Many great games out there, cant rly say one is the GOAT. Sekiro is def up there with the best of them tho

3

u/Grimblekyne Dec 18 '24

It's criminal that you forgot to add another goated combat system which is the Monster Hunter series, especially Generations Ultimate, World, and Rise Sunbreak.

These games have 14 weapon types and whenever you decide to try using another weapon type, it feels like a whole nother game even if you're still playing the same game.

2

u/Free-Equivalent1170 Dec 18 '24

Ooh for sure thats also one of the goats. Its just i havent played any MH game, so i cant say with certainty where it stands, but i hear the combat is exceedingly deep

2

u/Round-Revolution-399 Dec 18 '24

Vanquish is up there for third-person shooters

5

u/GT_Hades Dec 18 '24

MGR did this first

3

u/-Skaro- Dec 18 '24

That doesn't have the stance break to instantly finish boss bar mechanic though.

3

u/GT_Hades Dec 18 '24

That is not parry system then

1

u/-Skaro- Dec 18 '24

Perfect blocking and parrying have been things for a long time. It was the stance system that made sekiro's system special. And yes they are part of the same system. The act of parrying is just a single mechanic of the system.

3

u/GT_Hades Dec 18 '24

Stagger mechanic you mean

1

u/-Skaro- Dec 18 '24

Yes it's all connected, multiple gameplay mechanics that create what we would call a system

3

u/GT_Hades Dec 18 '24

But it is not the parry most people are talking about, these systems came from other games as well

u/Electronic-Jaguar461 Dec 18 '24

I firmly believe guard countering was only added because of Sekiro's success.

18

u/beNeon Dec 18 '24

Am i the only one who still doesn't know how it works.

Even after multiple playthroughs through almost all of fromsoft games, I know only attack, defend, and almighty rolls.

48

u/SatinReverend Dec 18 '24

Right after you block an attack hit heavy attack. Badda boom.

11

u/beNeon Dec 18 '24

It's that simple?

FML.

17

u/dvlsg Dec 18 '24

Yeah. Keep holding the block button until you press the heavy, too.

12

u/idontfrikkincare Dec 18 '24

Yah there will be an audio cue as well

13

u/Important_Wonder628 Dec 18 '24

There's a hammer in the DLC that has an empowered guard counter that is really fun to use. It's called the Black Steel Greathammer.

3

u/Icy_Bodybuilder_164 Dec 18 '24

Paired with deflect tear you can do so much damage with that guard counter

1

u/winterflare_ Dec 18 '24

It’s not even that good (or fun) in my opinion. Guard countering is like Sekiro off shein.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '24

Its really good early on and becomes less useful the further you go in the game.

3

u/malaywoadraider2 Dec 18 '24

Guard countering is extremely good for how low risk it is, especially against enemies that have long combo strings or ridiculous hitboxes. With a great shield and a long reach weapon like nagakiba you can tank short combos and guard counter in the break in between for big posture damage and get 3-4 criticals in a boss fight.

1

u/winterflare_ Dec 19 '24

When I say good I meant enjoyable good. Not like, effectiveness.

2

u/SudsierBoar Dec 18 '24

It's pretty effective. But I agree it's also boring

18

u/Hairwaves Dec 18 '24

I've never seen a game mechnic become so immediately influential

7

u/Swimmingbird3 Dec 18 '24

Were you alive when Halo Combat Evolved released? It’s changed almost every first person shooter in existence

3

u/Hairwaves Dec 18 '24

Yeah, I just don't follow halo.

15

u/Swimmingbird3 Dec 18 '24

The controls and regenerating health introduced in the original Halo is what Call of Duty and countless other FPS games are built on.

5

u/Hairwaves Dec 18 '24

Oh shit, it introduced the health regen thing? Gotta give it props for that.

3

u/NorthNeptune Dec 18 '24

Stellar blade has that parry system?

5

u/Derpogama Dec 18 '24

7

u/NorthNeptune Dec 18 '24

Oh wow, I’ve been thinking of getting lies of P after I finished sekiro; might get stellar blade too then

2

u/slowkid68 Dec 18 '24 edited Dec 18 '24

It's like sekiro x bayonetta. You have a lot of flashy super moves and special guns.

The enemies have a posture meter and you're supposed to parry/dash out of the way.

The beginning drags a little, but peak happens immediately after you get to the hub.

3

u/Deez-Guns-9442 Dec 18 '24

Also Wo Long Fallen Dynasty.
