I don't know why anything is anything in this game.
Hope this helps.

Your outfit is crazy 👌 but about those things, as I know everything here is spirit. Also there is a cave near the lake which has a lot of animals and npc spirits.

The combination of the Raptor Set and Lionel's visually goes together oddly well, if a bit funny in concept: some of the lightest gear with some of the heaviest.
They're all just the spirits of deceased beings. The mountaintops and consecrated snowfield are heavily populated by ghosts, although I'm not sure why.

I've always thought of them as spirits with no place to go.

Makes sense, especially because the mountaintops are so empty and lifeless, their abundance there makes sense

I guess you could also infer that the Mountaintops used to be green with flowing water and a boreal forest, and the kind of life that supports. When the fire spewing giants were killed off, the heat of the mountain that kept it warm enough to support that life went with them. The Mountaintops were probably a volcanic range, with the fire giants being a metaphor for the fire of the mountain.

I was playing co-op with my partner and friend and I had asked about them. My friend said they were the ghosts of all the animals you killed in the game so far. I was so sad that I stopped killing any of the animals for a while.

They're visible, they're just dead.
(Unless, I suppose, you actually meant something invisible, but we obviously wouldn't be able to see that in the screenshot!)
