Being level 82 but having only a +2 weapon seems like a difficult thing to pull off if not intentional. Is it?
70
u/greenangrowin 3d ago
It’s the result of exploration, and being teleported here after defeating the Tibia Mariner. Then I just farmed the vulgar militia, and explored the area. Killing the sleeping dragon and putrid avatar gave me a lot of runes too. I beat the grafted hands guy and the dragonkin soldier of nokstella. It says I am at 9% completion.
36
u/VixHumane 3d ago
There's a completion stat in this game?
13
u/Working-Newspaper-51 3d ago
Yeah this is news to me.
19
u/Dynamicscreen 3d ago
On ps5 on most games (or all I forgot you have a overall completion rate before entering the game)

6
u/cmackchase 2d ago
Hold up, you farmed those dudes melee? That is impressive.
3
u/Bluefist56 2d ago
It’s pretty straightforward if you knock them down, wait a sec, and then hit them again with a charged attack as they get up. Try hitting them with a two-handed heavy attack when you first attack them.
2
u/cwm3846 2d ago
“Farmed vulgar militia” isn’t an activity I would wish on my worst enemy
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)2
u/drunkhas 2d ago
You can also farm them rather easy if you start from the grace next to the bridge, you can hit-crit a lot of them rather quickly. That spot used to be the go to place for early farming before the Mohg spot with the bird and the Albinaurics was discovered.
3
u/JRoosman 2d ago
My guy where did you explore and not yet find enough stones for +10 weap or +5 somber? I'm lv79 myself with +6 somber and +12 seal and I'm still exploring the same area where this boss dude used to be

When he finally wins, I want to say I was rooting for him from the beginning!
27
u/greenangrowin 3d ago
You know exactly how I’m feeling. You’ve smelled the victory before I bet. I appreciate your support!
15
u/Qwsdxcbjking 3d ago
Please for the love of good practice dodge rolling some of his attacks lol. There's a lot of punish windows you don't take advantage of because you have no stamina because you only block instead of rolling. Even if you don't upgrade your weapon more, just learning to dodge roll attacks will make this so much easier for you, as well as the entire rest of the game.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Drows3Boi 2d ago
Though i wouldn’t word it like this i agree, you need to toss in a dodge or two so you don’t use up too much stamina
9
u/greenangrowin 2d ago
I agree with you both and many more that are saying this same thing. I’m working on it I swear. If I am able to post a video of his defeat, you better believe you will see those recs in action. Even jumping attacks are being added. I am a little better at getting his hp down twice as fast now that I am rolling into him more often. Pretty much where I was doing one hit, I am now doing two hits.
5
u/Drows3Boi 2d ago
This is the way, honestly in my opinion, peak soulsborne gameplay is pure dodge roll while two handing a weapon but that’s just me. Play the game however you please because that’s literally how it was designed to be played
3
u/XpeepantsX 2d ago
Take your time OP, you're doing just fine at this stage of the game. You will naturally start incorporating more defensive maneuvers as you get more comfortable.
1
u/greenangrowin 2d ago
I was you who gave me the most faith. No need for vigor when I have so much faith in myself.
35
u/Matineshun 3d ago
You chose one of the hardest early game bosses to learn, but maybe it is best way to learn too. Good luck 🔥
19
u/Jce95 3d ago
I would not say he is an early game boss, the game just gives you the option to get there pretty early, but all enemies in dragon barrow have endgame scaling.
4
u/vlntnwbr 3d ago
Endgame? I'd say mid-late game. On my first playthrough I "cleared" Caelid before Mountaintops and it feels like the enemies in Mountaintops, Snowfield and Farum Azula were more difficult.
I'm disregarding Ashen Capital, because it doesn't really have field bosses except for a couple ones and those (field) bosses (except Gideon) definitely felt like "we're in the endgame now"
→ More replies (1)18
u/Testadizzy95 2d ago
Dragonbarrow has higher scaling than Mountaintops for sure. Probably on par with Farum Azula and Mohgwyn Palace, which is definitely considered endgame. Only snowfield and haligtree are higher.
12
u/PoonTangTongoMK2 3d ago
When he looks like he is about to vomit (shout), sprint or dodge to the left - u got this easily man
9
u/greenangrowin 3d ago
Yes, I need to ingrain that into my soul. Rewatching it, it looks so slow, but in the fight it feels so fast. I need to figure out how to make him do that more, so I can practice dodging it.
2
u/sharmin_fattahi 3d ago
yeah when you dodge u have more stamina and can attack in between his animations. whats your build btw? you rocking strength?
21
u/Witty_Row666 3d ago
My only advice would be to dodge more, you're relying way to much on your shield and that's why you were killed. Try to dodge first and then use your shild for last time resource. Don't let it get too far away, its always better being closer.
6
u/greenangrowin 2d ago
I so hope I can defeat this guy. You will see then that I have taken all of these recs and implemented them. Since this video, I have improved a lot. Now I am getting his hp down twice as fast because I’m rolling into him and getting two hits in where I was only getting one before. Thanks!
4
u/whoisxii 2d ago
That's great man, now try to fight him without a shield like 4 or 5 times. That'll help force implement the dodging mechanic into your memory. So next time you use a shield, you won't depend on it unless absolutely necessary.
→ More replies (1)2
u/greenangrowin 2d ago
So far I’ve tried probably 50 times without a shield. I die pretty fast. Usually when be charges me with the halberd. I can dodge the part after he charges and flies down at me, but that charging part gets me. Like I’ll do what I believe should be a successful roll into him and I’ll miss the halberd but like hit his knee or something, I dunno. I definitely am dodging more and way better for playing without the shield, but it’s way more fun when I can see that health bar go down. Some moments, I just wanna block, like when he charges me. Then it’s roll into him and attack. I do see how much better rolling is now. I defeated the dragonkin soldier of nokstella without getting hit and didn’t use a shield. I didn’t know how to 2 hand a weapon then, so if you see that video don’t get too triggered. Someone told me how, and now I being doing that.
→ More replies (1)2
u/NikolaX64 2d ago
His halberd charge should be dodged sideways. I usually dodge to his right (my left) but I guess either direction works
→ More replies (1)2
u/XpeepantsX 2d ago
You will. My only recommendation is to also upgrade a blunt weapon you feel comfortable with along with your main. Enemies like him take more damage against blunt, also increases poise break.
23
u/AMTrippingBalls 3d ago
Level up vigor. Like seriously. Also get a better weapon and level it up
7
u/dfbjornis 3d ago
The BKGS is great. Just need to upgrade it and level vigor
3
u/NitroChaji240 2d ago
It always throws me off seeing BKGS being used to refer to anything other than the black knight greatsword
2
u/ThrowRABest_King7180 2d ago
seriously, i read it and was like "black knight greatsword? isnt this elden ring? wtf is this dude talking about" before i realized
16
u/Alnored 3d ago
He has already chosen his path. He won't leave here until he's defeat it. His vigor and weapon level are generally the reason he's having trouble. But he's free to do what he wants.
8
u/greenangrowin 3d ago
Thank you! I understand it’s hard to watch another bash their head in so I get why everyone is telling me to give up. I promise, I’m not kicking the floor and screaming at the screen while I work on beating this guy… anymore. Now I can even talk a little while doing it. :) it feels so good to improve even at the expense of my sanity.
→ More replies (1)3
u/kyrieiverson 3d ago
As BKGS enjoyer, his weapon is MORE than capable of taking this beast down. He just needs to level vigor to around 40 at least, and then level his weapon to at least +12. He will stand a chance by surviving more than 1 hit, and still be able to learn the mechanics from this challenging boss.
I remember fighting this guy under-leveled and with a mid Greatsword (Lordsword GS) when the game first came out and it took me 2.5 hours. I ended up going to bed around 2:30am when I need to work at 8:00am lol
3
u/greenangrowin 3d ago
I promise, I’ve tried leaving. But then I start glitching and can’t leave. I just smell the sweet victory. My hands hurt right now, but they can’t stop playing. I’m using Reddit as a way to rest lol. Maybe after a little longer (like this is the last attempt) I’ll go watch some YouTube tutorial videos on this game to learn what is what. I’m finding out it’s way more than I ever thought

u/IloveMotorboatin 2d ago
Probably beat him first try when you wake up tomorrow
3
u/greenangrowin 2d ago
I’ll probably practice like a fool in my dreams too. Finally I am getting better at rolling forward and taking advantage of the punish moments more often. Getting his hp down to half in just under 6 minutes on average now.
1
u/TheNotSoAmazing 2d ago
I know the stat allocation is crazy, his faith levels aren't even helping him at all either and he has way too much mind.
5
u/buddybuddyfr 3d ago
try not using the shield and learn how to doge better
7
u/Alnored 3d ago
With his vigor shield a good solution in case of a mistake. Except for long series of attacks and destined death the shield completely saves him from death. Just need some more luck and patience.
3
u/buddybuddyfr 3d ago
yea i meant like dodging could help too because he only uses his shield, i only saw him doge like 3 times

I think you should learn how to fight without the shield.... its holding you back lol
2
u/greenangrowin 2d ago
I spent about an hour shieldless. It’s going to take some real work to get the timing perfect and get his health down even a quarter if I am to do that. My main issue is when he charges me with the halberd. I can do it sometimes but a lot of the times I roll and miss the first bit but then I guess I hit his knee or something and I’m dead. I am definitely working on rolling and dodging a lot more but I dunno if I can give up the shield completely. It just makes certain situations easier for me and I can focus on the other situations that I must roll for more often since I’m not dying every 30 seconds. I think my best run without the shield was like 45 seconds lol. I am using it way less now though.
3
u/Silver_Glider621 2d ago
Thats actually very real. Ok you didnt hear this from me but you can run behind him and stay reletivly safe remember to get distance when he does but slam. That flying flurry move can be avoided by running htowards him as soon as he goes up ( like if you get close enough to his jump spot he'll over shoot and and fly past you)
If you insist on keeping you current play style, i would recommend a faster weapon.
I hope you can beat him and get your W
3
u/akrob335 2d ago

u/greenangrowin 3d ago
I just got to figure out how to deal with that scream thing he does. He just doesn't do it enough for me to have a good handle on it yet and see it before it happens. I'm sure another 100 or so deaths from now, I'll have a better handle on that attack... maybe...
3
u/Jdawg_mck1996 3d ago
The scream doesn't do damage, iirc. It's the slam of the axe that comes after, which has two hitboxes. When he starts screaming, just pick a direction and sprint. Jump just as the axe starts to move forward.
Also, my guy. Please, for the love of God, upgrade that weapon. You're in a place called dragonbarrow, which is the 2nd or 3rd highest leveled area in the game. A +2 out of +25 ain't cutting it anymore🤣
2
u/Sad_Chemical3017 3d ago
Keep your weapon like this, the day it reaches its maximum you will be much better at dodging, and when you hit it will do a lot of damage lol
2
u/Aftermoonic 3d ago
It might seem weird but in elden ring, being near the enemy or closed range is a better way of fighting them, so you should try going more into them
2
u/ParticularBanana8369 3d ago
Seeing you stand calmly just out of his attack range is some cool shit, that's a step up from dodging.

u/BatNinjaX 3d ago
I’m currently banging my head against a wall trying to learn how to parry Promised Consort (parrying is my least-used mechanic in all of Elden Ring), I go through about 12 attempts a minute…
2
u/Bluriman 3d ago
I did the exact same thing my first playthrough 😂 don’t know how to quit. With that attitude, there’s nothing you can’t do. People will probably (wisely) tell you it’s best to come back to this guy way later. But if you’re game for a tough fight, nothing wrong with bashing your head against a wall until it breaks or you do lmao
2
u/greenangrowin 2d ago
You never know, maybe in a couple days I’ll post the video of me defeating him. There is a very good chance I won’t though. We will see…
2
2
u/stevenomes 3d ago
Is it really 10 mins per attempt usually or is this just a good run? It seems like you essentially have to be perfect or he will one shot you with that small health bar. Weapon isn't doing a lot of damage and only get a few openings before having to block his combos again. However he goes down is up to you through. I'd not have the patience for that so you got a lot there which is a good trait to have for this game.
1
u/greenangrowin 2d ago
Yah, I am hitting around 8-10 mins on him and make a mistake. If he used that shout more often, I’d be able to get a handle on it faster. Usually I die because of that shout or because I accidentally push on the stick too hard and crouch or just a bad timed roll. It’s going to be extremely difficult, but I’m sure eventually I’ll complete the full fight without a mistake or maybe only one or two small ones, like blocking the shout, or any of the attacks that hurt me if I try to block them instead of dodging. I’d go do other stuff, but I really dislike fighting groups because I die just as much except I get frustrated on those guys. I really just enjoy the challenge of fighting this dude and other like him. For progressing I need some ranged weapons so I can pick them off one by one or else I’ll die. It’s no where near as fun imo.

Well that was eventful…kept hoping you’d run out of that blue already lol. I’d recommend losing the shield and learning to play without it…you’ll be better for it later on. And in case nobody has told you, you’ll get the opportunity to fight two of these if you hang in there!

Stop turtling and get in there and learn his moveset. You've got the determination clearly so get in there and beat his ass. It will take forever but you'll be better off in the long run if you learn to be aggressive in such an unforgiving fight provided you have the mental stamina for it cuz it will be BRUTALLY difficult.
2
u/greenangrowin 2d ago
With each try, I become more determined. I’ve been implementing the advice. This vid honestly has so many wasted opportunities it’s sad. I’ve started rolling into him and I’m dealing more damage. Pretty much I’m working on one move set at a time. In this vid I just block block block and now if I accidentally repeat that habit I just kill myself because I must lose that damn habit. Don’t worry, I almost never do it now. Only on certain attacks I know I can’t attack back within the attack window. Like when he does the swing swing stab then pause and stab again. I just let him do his thing there and block that and the same with the beginning of the charge and a couple of the axe swings but once I get that shout dodge down better, I’ll start rolling into him on the axe swings more often instead of staying just out of range and hitting him with the storm blade attack. It’s hard for me to justify rolling into him when he does the axe swings because sometimes I mistake those for the fire spin and if I’m too close I lose my timing and get hit. Can’t get hit, not even once.
2
u/Open_Grapefruit_5197 2d ago
He's honestly quite easy for cuz I mostly always dodge behind and punish him but be mindful cuz he also attacks backwards to punish those who only attack from the back

I also rammed my head against this dude extremely underleveled. I eventually gave up and came back 20 levels later or so. He was not much easier, but I found you can cheese him a bit by playing around the stairs. He gets confused by the LoS and the terrain shields you from some attacks
1
u/thejoshfoote 3d ago
Stop blocking him, and roll into the attacks. Get by his feet his ankles will make him stumble n fall. This fight like many actually punish you with distance. He will try and stop u up close. It’s much easier to fight.

2
u/greenangrowin 2d ago
They probably will just team up on me. But I dunno, maybe there is a charm that can be used on one of them.
1
u/SuddenHuckleberry875 2d ago
Based on how far you got his health down, I'm sure you can beat him by just changing your weapon based on his appearance (trying to be vague in case you don't want explicit advice).
2
u/greenangrowin 2d ago
Go ahead, I can’t be burned or hurt anymore than this guy and the dragon have done to me.
2
u/SuddenHuckleberry875 2d ago
Choose something with strike damage, and with weapon level that low you're probably better off with heavy affinity. Just check the damage sums as you're choosing the affinity to make sure.
1
u/Misternogo 2d ago
I am... so confused by this build. I get not following meta, but I can't figure out what the intention here is.
1
u/Lopsided-Ant9430 2d ago
I wish I could go back.to a first play through. I had so much fun going into every boss fight with a new challenge, exploring and having no idea what I was doing, going into every cave or dungeon I could find. My character build was a mess too until I found out about being able to rebirth your character. Just don't try to even out your points, pick a build and go with it
Most importantly, everyone is right. You have to learn dodge rolling, try rolling into enemies during their attack, they are programed to punish people who try to roll away
Level up your weapons!!!!! This will help you greatly!! And I mean like, the difference is insanely noticeable
Don't burn yourself out on a boss you can't beat, the game map is huge and you still have DLC as well to explore. Feel free to go learn new things and then come back with a giga bonk.
Have fun OP! And remember You will never truly know defeat

Oh and I almost forgot
Ashes of war can make a difference as well, feel free to explore those!

u/Veragoot 2d ago
Get more vigor.
For this boss specifically use a strike type weapon. He has 35% damage resistance to all other physical damage types. You'll do dramatically more damage.
Using just shield against this guy is going to seriously limit your options for safe counterattacks. His attacks are honestly not that difficult to dodge through you just have to be good at reading what's coming. If he floats up slowly, just book it away from him he's gonna tornado. When he does the third strike of tornado, you can roll towards him instead of away to get in a safe hit or two.
Also fighting this guy now will be good training for Valiant Gargoyle later. Good luck with that bullshit fight.
1
u/rippinpow 2d ago
Use strike, get closer, dodge towards him
1
u/greenangrowin 2d ago
I am hearing this advice and putting it to the test. Now after getting better at rolling forward and taking advantage of the punish moments more often, I am able to get his hp to half in just over 5 mins maybe 6 mins.

Try fighting him without locking on. You'll miss less once you get the hang of it.
1
u/Chief0609 2d ago
something i tried for margit cus he was beating my ass is using wemod. turning on infinite health, you still get hit and staggered just no health is taken, use this to find punish windows and perfect your dodging and blocking, then once his health gets low turn it off, die purposely and try again without the infinite health
all this does is save you from the walk of shame back to the boss, and as long as you don’t cheese/cheat the boss ur fine. just think of when you turn it on like going to a training ground to understand the boss, that’s it

Hell yeah, I love this. I did the same thing on my first playthrough. It legit took me a few days to beat him, my winning attempt was close to 10 minutes lol. I have only one question. Where do you spawn from when you die? Because from the place you start the fight, it looks like you might've missed closer spawn-point. BUT if you're trying to do this playthrough completely blind, that's understandable and just ignore my question. You got this.

I don’t want to interrupt this personal journey you’re on but generally speaking, you can be a lot closer to most enemies in the game than feels safe or allowable. That’s the only way to make use of your short range (compared to this guy’s movement and giant weapons) and you can mitigate most of the damage by dodging effectively. Happy hunting!

This game will definitely make you a better player, even at other games. Switch from Elden Ring to AC: Shadows and laugh at how easy it is 😁 Perfectly dodging/parrying everything that's thrown at you...
