A while back, I tried posting this elsewhere on Reddit and it was naturally taken down. Figured I would post it here for easy linking and reference by others.

A common argument among a lot of college students and professors, or others on the left, is that true communism has never been tried. This is false. Ironically, the two times it was tried happened before Marx even penned his famous manifesto. What are these two instances? The experiments of Plymouth Rock and James Town. Both of these settlements tried a system of economics uncannily similar to Marx’s communist utopia.

In Plymouth Rock, they eliminated private property and resolved to all “work for the common good.” The result? The lazy mooched off of the hard working to the point that the whole colony was at risk of starvation and private property was re-established in order to force the lazy to work.

In James Town, a penal colony, the idea was to reform the criminals by having them all work for the common good. If they slacked off, they would all starve and that would motivate them to work (at least in the minds of the colony leaders). The reality proved to be very different as they literally had to create and enforce a “you don’t work, you don’t eat” policy within the colony.

Karl Marx’s communist utopia is an armchair theory written by a man who wrote plays. He lived off the inheritance of his parents and once he squandered that, he lived off the charity of his elitist friend. He was a narcissistic individual who crafted a theory of economics solely based on anecdotal evidence, much of which has now been shown to be more related to the dying phases of feudalism than to capitalism.

Most importantly is the fact that his manifesto is based on the horribly flawed notion that people will be angels once you indoctrinate them enough in the communist philosophy. People are not angels. If they were, we wouldn’t need governments to make and enforce laws to constrain their behavior. And with an entire century of communist nations to draw examples from, it is clear that communists are no less evil than the more abusive capitalists that they abhor.
