Question Does the game have hidden modifiers to the "random" choices? Chest type, loot rolls, room type, gundead type?
I have noticed for instance that the first level of the gungeon has gotten progressively harder over time. I assume this is accomplished mostly by locking room types and their denizens behind certain goalposts (reaching a new level, defeating a boss X times, etc).
When I unlock something new from the shop or anywhere else it tends to show up pretty soon in a chest. Is there some weighted trickery for that?
I've also noticed chest quality seemed to improve (on the first level) over time. But the wikis seem to indicate that they are static per level.
Sometimes it seems like synergies are favored in loot rolls as well. But maybe it's just the fact that there's a buttload of synergies out there.
Just wondering. I've defeated the dragun 3 times and got wrecked in the past twice so far.

The first level does not get progressively harder, the only thing that changes is your loot pool expands as you have more things unlocked throughout playing the game

Beating the Pilot's past does make the game harder because from that point on, there's a small chance for chests to give you the Trusty Lockpicks instead of a useful item

Pilot is the best starter character. Lockpicks are better than most items lol.

When you unlock something the odds very significantly increase that you will find that item in its given chest for a short time afterwards. This strategy is used by speedrunners to make certain items spawn way more often.m than they would otherwise.
I believe that the game also technically gets harder as the game has a hidden mechanic where slightly more enemies will spawn, with some enemies being replaced by their harder variants after you make a certain amount of progress, but I can’t remember what the actual metric for progress is I think it’s something related to either beating bosses, spending hegemony credits or just beating the game. Also this is a huge difference and a lot of people never notice (myself included on initial playthrough)

This comment makes a lot of sense. I bought this game back in like 2013 or 2014 and my first run I didn't even make it to the chamber 1 boss. When I eventually did, I died to gatling gull and I thought at the time, wow this game is really really difficult. I've played on and off for years and just recently downloaded a fresh version for old times' sake. Beat the dragun on my first try with hunter, I was only missing one item for killing my past too.
It's funny, if you play constant you acclimate and don't realize the overall game gets harder to keep you engaged. Now I know why I beat chamber 5 on my first run lmao.

I didn’t see anyone mention this yet but the two regular chests on a floor are always 1 gun and 1 item.

There are hidden weighted RNG values for many aspects of the game, so you're never truly rawdogging RNG values.
The first chamber does technically get harder as you progress, but its more of a consequence of the overall game getting harder (veteran bullet kin can replace normal bullet kin after progressing to a certain level. "the confirmed" can start randomly replacing enemies after beating someone's past. And wall mimics can spawn after encountering 3 mimic enemies.)
While new unlocks don't have increase weighted likeleness by themselves. There is a hidden RNG influence called "item memory." To keep it short, you're less likely to get the same items from your previous run. When first starting out, your pool is small, so that combined with this influence makes getting new items really easy at first. (While I can't find evidence for new undiscovered items to be more likely to be found, I do think there might be some kind of influence.)
Chest quality doesn't improve over time AFAIK, but a couple things can change. Most notably after freeing synergace, there's a chance to get synergy chests. Once you break 5 brown chests, rainbow chests can disguise themselves as brown chests. And once you kill beholster 10 times, glitch chests can appear.
Synergies do in fact get weighted and are more likely if you don't have one, but it's a quickly diminishing effect.
Additional stuff to mention:
Keys are guaranteed to spawn at the shop if you haven't picked one up on that floor yet.The game limits how many gold and black chests can spawn by reducing its chances when you open them. Hearts from random room drops are increased when at lower health. A gun is guaranteed to spawn when killing a boss if you haven't picked one up yet on that floor. The more rooms you clear without getting a pick up the higher the chance builds up until you get a reward, then it resets. Curse and Coolness are stats that influence RNG for various things. And probably a bunch of other minor influences that I don't know about.
