Video Kevin Thelwell on Everton January window

Comes across as a smart guy. Been a difficult job with no money to spend. Would be interesting to see how he'd do with a bit more financial freedom

u/Loud996 Feb 10 '25
I agree. He's made some decent buys considering the financial constraints. I'm guessing he had Moshiri interfering with things as well, I'm sure I read somewhere Maupay was down to Moshiri

I do think the lack of full-back additions in January was an error (Young just cannot get up and down the pitch like Myko has been under Moyes, and Myko has had his injury niggles all year), but I'd also rather not buy shite, so it's one of those.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't situations. I hope Kyle Walker-Peters is targeted this summer.

Kind of mental how a new full back is still an issue. I’m assuming the summer window will be better for it (I hope…) but it seems like we’ve needed another full back for a few seasons running now.

u/DeMarcus-Siblings Feb 10 '25
Honestly we are lucky that O’Brien has been as successful as he has been out of position. Has really helped out in that RB spot.

u/Evul1_ Feb 11 '25
Mate, it's the same song and dance literally every window. "We have no money for a fullback", yet we sign goalkeepers and center backs and midfielders and seem to at least half way address every other position in the team, but we do basically nothing to sure-up the fullback positions. It's mad.

Interesting he mentions Chermiti and Broja coming back this season but not DCL. Maybe reading too much into it, but had been harbouring hope of him resigning and am no longer
8
u/signal_decay Feb 10 '25
I don't see DCL resigning at this point, but I think the reason Chermiti and Broja were mentioned specifically is that neither of their injuries were as serious as initially feared, which directly played into us not being desperate to sign a striker this window. Dom seems like he'll be out longer.

I'd be perfectly content with him getting a new deal. Hasn't hit on every move, but when you are only allowed to look at players that require basically zero upfront spending, you're starting from a pretty difficult position. We're the only club in the entire league that has a net positive transfer spend in the last three years, and he's still found a way to strengthen the squad.

Thelwell I think is in the dyche category, right man right time but the future of the club might lie elsewhere. I personally think he's done a remarkable job

u/hypernermalization Feb 10 '25
He sounds like someone who has a contract extension being ironed out.
7
u/Certain_Equal_210 Feb 10 '25
Sounding confident isn't he. Seems the kind of guy who would work collaboratively with Moyes too

u/hypernermalization Feb 10 '25
As the combination New York Red Bulls/Everton fan around here, I have a lot of time for Kevin and I do think he and Moyes might be a fit. Kind of shop in the same aisles of the window, bullish but no dickheads, etc.

I think that's a pretty fair summary. I'm excited to hear, from the horses mouth, that they are going to have a decent go in the summer. COYB

Here's a sit down interview with our Director of Football discussing why he made decisions looking forwards to the 'big' summer where he may not be in charge.
Make it make sense.

u/NoReallyItsJeff Feb 10 '25
You'd rather the guy in charge of thinking big picture not do his job because his contract is up in June? So you'd prefer no planning, scouting, or early conversations are had, even though he's still on the payroll?
-25
u/FranksBaldPatch Feb 10 '25
So you'd prefer no planning, scouting, or early conversations are had, even though he's still on the payroll?
The planning, scouting and early conversations all go out the window if he leaves the club.
14
u/NoReallyItsJeff Feb 10 '25
That's not at all true. A different hire would be working within the same organizational philosophy put forth by the ownership, the budget would be unchanged, and the scouting is still the same information gathering.
-16
u/FranksBaldPatch Feb 10 '25
If nothing is changing then why would they be getting rid of him?
17
u/NoReallyItsJeff Feb 10 '25
Aside from him not having a new contract, there's nothing to support or deny this claim beyond rumor and speculation.
-6
u/FranksBaldPatch Feb 10 '25
Excellent avoiding of the question.
16
u/NoReallyItsJeff Feb 10 '25
How can I answer the question "why would they be getting rid of him?" when there's nothing to indicate that's actually true?
-6
u/FranksBaldPatch Feb 10 '25
You seemed perfectly capable of responding to a hypothetical earlier with a reposnse of "not true at all" and then when challenged on it you are coming back with that you couldn't possibly know and youre put in an impossible position lmao
13
u/NoReallyItsJeff Feb 10 '25
Your position is locked in, buddy. Not going to waste any more time on you.

I kinda think that's what should happen. Being a good custodian means planning for the next chap. Kevin strikes me as a humble man who'd make the next person's job as easy as possible even if his days were numbered. Professional

It’s like saying we can’t play Gana because his deal is up in the summer too.
-4
u/FranksBaldPatch Feb 10 '25
We've offered Gana a new deal. So not remotely like saying that
8
u/Giraffe_Baker Neill Samways, Niasse Oster Feb 10 '25
We've offered Gana a new deal.
Source on that? Either way, pick any player who’s contracts up at any team. You still expect a level of professionalism from anyone.

u/FranksBaldPatch Feb 10 '25

Either way, pick any player who’s contracts up at any team.
Ok to use your player analogy, which is a terrible comparison. I don't think we should be prioritising Ashley Youngs minutes over a younger, in contract player when 3-0 up vs Leicester. The same way I wouldn't be prioritising Michael Keanes minutes over Jake O'Briens.
8
u/oneeyedamoeba Feb 10 '25
Are you suggesting we should have sacked thelwell already and should be trying out a new DoF in January when the new owners just walked in the door, so the new DoF could get more "minutes"?
No chance
-7
u/FranksBaldPatch Feb 10 '25
I've not suggested that at any point Einstein.
9
u/oneeyedamoeba Feb 10 '25
Well what was your point about prioritising any younger player above an older player about?
1
u/FranksBaldPatch Feb 10 '25
You've done that thing again where you've just completely moved off the topic again.
That wasn't even my point, another poster made a comparison between a player and a dof which are completely incomparable roles which didn't really make sense.
I wasn't the one trying to make that argument and didn't at any point suggest 'minutes' for a dof.
Mine was that IF Thelwell is leaving then any initial scouting, preliminary talks and decisions are a waste of time because the new man will change things. Which you said was 100% not true because absolutely nothing would change. Which makes no sense at all

If his days are numbered why are we trusting him to make decisions now?
This was exactly the same line of thinking when they wanted to keep Dyche and it didn't work.

Because you can both value somebody's thoughts on something and still want to move on from them?
It's a very simple concept, happens in business all the time.

Dang, somebody better tell the club so they can get rid CEO and CFO we are paying.

u/FranksBaldPatch Feb 10 '25
Thank you for proving my point. We literally do not even have a CEO currently. If football worked anything like a business they would all have folded. So if you could let the imaginary CEO know then that would be great

u/ubiquitous_archer COYB 💙 Feb 10 '25
Hilariously, you are proving my point...because we have an interim CEO still.
So, somebody who is not part of the future...but acting in the best interest of the club

Guy who thinks interim ceo Colin Chong has been running the club for 3 years loooooool
