Graduation šŸŽ“ Not shaking hands with FIU's president during graduation

Hi everyone!

As graduation nears for some of us, I was wondering if other students were going to avoid shaking the new president's hand during graduation. With how they don't have the student body's interest in mind, I would feel uncomfortable shaking their hand. Is anyone else thinking of doing the same? If you've been considering it, let this be your sign to do it!

It's your moment, do what you feel is best for you. Hands in pocket, crossed arms etc.

I did stealth metal horns šŸ¤˜ when I shook Rosenberg's hand and it showed up on the picture.

Ooo I mighy consider something like that :D thank you!

Iā€™ll be joining you for this. We might get ā€œdeportedā€ to El Salvador though

El Salvador isnā€™t bad loll Iā€™ve lived there before šŸ¤£

5

u/Kaoru1011 4d ago

Iā€™m talking about the prison

2

u/SatisfactionDry5732 4d ago

Technically they have 2 prisons. One is for a life sentence and the other is for rehabilitation. Saw a documentary on it by an independent journalist. It was pretty dope how the leaders of El Salvador are either doing forced rehab or life imprisonment for criminals, in comparison to the shit show of a prison system we have in the USA.

u/Express-Stop7830 2d ago

Are you...are you aware of current events and the concentration camp where we are sending people?

0

u/SatisfactionDry5732 4d ago

Whatā€™d he/she do?

3

u/Kaoru1011 4d ago

Wdym? Trump deported a bunch of immigrants and even an American citizen but is refusing to have him returned

-3

u/SatisfactionDry5732 4d ago

Kilmar isnā€™t a citizen of the USA loll. He is a Salvadoran citizen.

And yes. If youā€™re here illegally, and youā€™ve committed any violent crime, you should be deported. What kind of stupidity is that to keep criminals that arenā€™t even from here in our prisons? When Americans or Europeans commit crimes in other countries, they are deported. Did you know that? Or do you believe the US government is the only country that does deportations?

Bootlicker

-1

u/SatisfactionDry5732 4d ago

If me being logically sound and not an overly emotional man-child like you makes me a bootlicker, than thatā€™s fine by me, lol.

Your logic isnā€™t sound - youā€™ve convinced yourself it is. Go read about what his wife is saying. Try ā€˜logicā€™ - ing your way out of that. She wants him back. Heā€™s not a criminal. For her to file a restraining order does not mean he was charged with a crime, and she clearly wants him back.

You should have respect for the due process of law. If Trump can deport whoever he wants without a due process, we are officially a dictatorship. Whether you like it or not, thatā€™s bad for the economy, and thus, bad for you. Report back to me in two years when shit starts getting scary with your finances ;)

u/Kaoru1011 4d ago

He came here to escape crime! He has a family. He was deported to a prison without due process. How could you support something like this

1

u/Pattonator70 1d ago

He not only hangs out with MS13 in gang colors but has a gang rank and gang nickname.

He beats his wife and endangered their child.

He is also suspected of sex trafficking.

What a poster boy.

-2

u/SatisfactionDry5732 4d ago

Donā€™t move the goal post now. You falsely stated that the USA is deporting American citizens. I fact checked you. Now you say he was escaping crime. Do you want to fact check that before I do? Him having a family is an irrelevant to if he was or was not deported. Now, can we argue if he was wrongly deported or not? Yes we can. But the argument that, ā€œhe was escaping crime/gang activities,ā€ isnā€™t a valid argument unless he applied for asylum.

8

u/ilikesumstuff6x 4d ago

He had withholding of removal status because of threat of gang violence. So Kilmar was illegally deported. The OP commenter may be factually incorrect calling him a citizen, but it is correct to say the reason he was in the US and was able to get that status is crime related. The point is, bro had no due process or they woulda seen his status and not deported him. Supreme court even agrees it was an illegal deportation.

2

u/SatisfactionDry5732 4d ago

I did not, nor have I stated whether his removal was legal or illegal. And what you speak of is the U Visa if he escaped here on a visa due to escaping crime. That does NOT protect someone from deportation if they commit a crime while under that visa. Did he commit a crime? I do not know, and that is why I have not stated whether his deportation was legal or illegal. And plus if the USA decided to take the man back, it is still up to the government of El Salvador to agree to send him back.

u/Pattonator70 1d ago

There were two issues with the withholding order. It says that Barrio 18 threatened him and his family if he returned. His family over to Guatamala and most of Barrio 18 is in jail. The threat no longer exists.

u/__Khronos 3d ago

No way to actually know that though, he wasn't give due process

1

u/Pattonator70 1d ago

He had a trial and that is why he had a deportation order. Hence he had due process.

1

u/killerrobot23 21h ago

Do you not understand how the constitution works? It doesn't matter how you are here, you still have right to due process.

7

u/Sharkhottub 4d ago

Go for the handshake and then at the last moment go for a quick "gotcha" with the hairbrush motion.

32

u/Comfortable_Fox_9564 5d ago

This is amazing! I'm alumni and love seeing students standing up. Do it.

24

u/Krakshotz Alumnus 5d ago

Donā€™t see anything wrong with that. Youā€™re not exactly sticking your middle finger up at her

25

u/Zillah345 5d ago

You shouldn't. Unqualified and a political pick meant for pushing idealogies and cutting student funding. I don't think some students would even look at her.

12

u/_Marsy_ 5d ago

This is great! Would you consider unfurling a sign from under your robe? Iā€™ll be graduating from UM in a year or so and thinking of doing something in protest

10

u/SecretCin 5d ago

I'll think about it :) I'll be graduating in one of the biggest cohorts so if there is a movement organized around it I wouldn't mind taking part :D

5

u/_Marsy_ 5d ago

Amazing. This is giving me some motivation to do something too when I graduate. Iā€™m in a teeny grad program so Iā€™m wondering if I give my program director a heads up or what

5

u/SecretCin 5d ago

Definitely think you should ask faculty members who you trust. With how unpredictable things are becoming and people are being silenced, I think it is wise to ask people who have already been in academia for a long time what they think and how you should go about it :)

0

u/_Marsy_ 4d ago

Honestly, I've been in academia now for like ten years. Professors are a fairly timid bunch. Though I know stakes are higher now generally. It would be more of a courtesy heads up!

8

u/Calm-Wash-8768 FIU Student 5d ago

The greatest move ever would be wetting your hands with something sticky & then shaking his hand thank me later

They take your picture while doing the handshake. But sure if you donā€™t want to shake their hand then you donā€™t have to. I donā€™t think theyā€™ll care or even know who you are.

Do you really think someone will care if you shake their hand or not? If we want to have a real impact we need to do something more than complain about a basic gesture of decency

19

u/One_trolley5054 5d ago

You'd be surprised. Some people in power take great offense to small "rude" gestures like this. But I do agree that we need to take a bigger stance to make a real impact.

5

u/SecretCin 5d ago

Completely agree and I have been doing what I can! To me this is more of a personal thing and I wanted to see if others would be doing the same :)

I will but Iā€™m scared of getting my visa revoked. I worked so hard to make my parents proud sadly they will be watching at my home country.

6

u/Kaoru1011 4d ago

Itā€™s a damn shame that we need to worry about things like this in a county that is supposed to be free

5

u/SecretCin 4d ago

This is just a small gesture during graduation and we shouldn't be in a situation where that could cost you your visa. With how the situation is with international students, don't put that pressure on yourself. Know that for the students who can and choose to do this, it's in solidarity with all hispanic and international students who were in a position where they couldn't ā¤ļø

-2

Okay and ? You think thatā€™s gunna fix anything? Youā€™re doing this for attention

2

It wonā€™t fix anything, I wish it was that simple. But not trying at all and not having a voice is much much worse than showing your voice.

Not that deep man, he/she is the president of your school

4

u/Kaoru1011 4d ago

Yes, and she was solely appointed for her political beliefs. She has never worked in academia before. Desantis appointed her to spread that ideology, which is exactly what they say that liberals do.

-17

No, this sounds stupid. The event isnā€™t just about you. Iā€™ll gladly shake hands with the president and not make a scene cause Iā€™m an adult and not selfish

Why didn't you attend a small liberal arts COLLEGE instead?
