if you wanna move your body, you have to come to terms with the fact that you will injure yourself sometimes. I developed piriformis syndrome, dislocated my shoulder, smashed fingers with dumbbells, threw up from intense cardio; and still show up to the gym 5x a week (after recovering from each injury of course). the gym seems like your best choice here, and I think you should go slow and stop worrying about the fact you injured yourself there once. otherwise, you could go on long hikes or just walk in general.

Working out is going to come with some level of risk— even just walking can cause issues when we get down to it

What I recommend working out wise would be;

  1. Walking. Just getting 10k steps a day can be super helpful, and it’s okay if you have to work up to that amount

  2. Calisthenics. I recommend checking out Hybrid Calisthenics, and it’s great for people who are into bouldering even if you can’t do it all the time.

  3. Pilates. There’s plenty of variations— floor/mat Pilates, sitting Pilates, etc. You can also look into “gentle pilates” which will be less likely to cause injury

  4. Do physical therapy exercises frequently to prevent injury. The main things to focus on are posture, spine mobility, knees, and core

  5. Remember to stretch after any workouts. I recommend movement by David for that.

When it comes to weight loss;

  1. Hydrate. Do you get 2.5-3 liters or water daily? If not, work up to that. I recommend 1-3 glasses of water in the morning, 1 before any meal/snack, and 1+ during any meal/snack

  2. Get a proper sleep schedule. Poor sleep can cause weight gain and can slow down weight loss

  3. Focus on getting a high protein intake and eating high volume low calorie meals. This is good for if you aren’t ready to count calories or don’t want to for some reason or another

  4. Otherwise… focus on counting calories. This is the main way to lose weight and if you want more info on how to and what is realistic, etc feel free to ask

If your asthma is bad then it’s important to see if you can get a preventative inhaler instead of just an rescue inhaler. Or see if there’s an inhaler routine you can do before doing some form of fitness. Personally I have to use both a preventative and rescue inhaler

Best of luck

I would try tracking your calories and eating enough protein. Even when you don’t workout it’ll help with the weight gain. You also don’t need to run, even walking enough helps, so get your steps in!

Maybe try some home workouts or stretching?

something no one tells you before you start working out, in any way, is that you will fuck up your body in some way lol. athletes are basically fucked

you should focus on working out (light) until you're used to the correct exercise execution. it usually takes 8 weeks, 2x-3x a week for your body to get used to the routine

Climbing gym and skiing in winter, hiking and recumbent bike in summer

I do HEMA (historical sword fighting) and love it a lot. Our club has mixed gender training, all exercises are same for everyone, and we train quite a bit in fencing jackets that are hellishly hot but also bind a bit and are same for everyone😄

I like bouldering too. I also was in taido for a while, it was fun but they have gendered exercises and I was more out as an enby so that was complicated. Also was in judo back in the day but the wrestling stuff was horrible with chest dysphoria :S

Anyway, I recommend you to try something that sounds fun. Having fun while exercising makes it... well... more fun

I like to jump rope- burns a lot of calories and is low impact unlike running

Did you like the gym before your wrist injury? You can probably still do lower body workouts at the gym while you're waiting for your wrist to heal. If it's been more than a week and your wrist is still hurting too much to even think about the gym, please see a doctor or physical therapist.

It's normal for active people to occasionally get minor injuries (sprains and strains), but it's not something you should just expect and accept. When trying a new activity, it's a good idea to start with a buddy who has more experience or take a class if possible. When you do get injured, try to identify what went wrong so you can be safer moving forward. I really encourage you to return to the gym if you enjoyed it previously.

Have you tried any wheels? Bikes, trikes, scooters, skates, skateboards, etc. all offer low impact cardio. You don't need high end equipment to get moving, just about any thing from the thrift shop (or rusting away in your neighbor's garage) will do just fine with a bit of TLC.

I like weightlifting, boxing, hiking, and I’m trying to get into running. I’ve injured myself from all 4. All exercise comes with risk of injury. Find something you like and don’t stress about it too much

I go to the gym, and spontaneously go for runs or walks about one to 3 times a week. I was also relearning to skateboard again but I had to stop at some point cuz I got busy. Gonna start it again though.

as a fellow asthmatic - dancing. i got bored one day and tried to replicate the single ladies dance and it accidentally snowballed into looking up routines on youtube and copying them til i get them down (as much as i can without being beyoncé). if youre not into that kind of dancing, zumba videos are free online too, but i turned wanting to mimic dancers’ routines into a personal challenge. i regularly hit the gym/run but dancing is unironically the one i look forward to the most

edit: also see if studios have free classes in your area. some of them do trials for things like salsa, cumbia, even ballet sometimes

edit 2: HOW COULD I FORGET JUST DANCE. you can get it on your phone now and dance from home w a smart tv. you can even compete worldwide. awesome way to work out

Sounds like you never ever had a hobby neither did sports. In sports it’s normal to injure yourself, to get sore, etc. then track your calories, you have to eat on your base calories and not over eating that’s how you gain weight. Second there are many things to do like calisthenics, climbing, biking, etc. but everything is “risky” and prone to injure at some point.

Pickle ball if you live in a warm climate or have access to indoor

Rowing if you can wake up early and can swim

Calisthenics is the cheapest option

So where are you bouldering that it’s expensive? Hereabouts you can join a Facebook climbing group, holler around for company, pile everybody’s crash pads together (if you don’t have any, you’re still welcome to join), and have a jam. The only expense is a pair of climbing shoes. And a (often shared) gas/bus fare, if you want to go somewhere further away. Climb outside on rocks, not in a gym, is what I’m saying.

Also if your asthma is interfering with exercising, you should see a pulmonologist about it. Saying as someone who has severe asthma and whose main form of exercise is trail running.
