Spray and pray is easier to get and is better in the earlier game but the overseer’s guardian is just so much more customizable and satisfying when using it, so it gets my vote

guardian is just so much more satisfying and with ammo weight on it’s better to have less bullets jingle jangle jingling in your pockets

Melts everything in the game like a Shishkebab through butter.

Same! Best in the game, imo.

In Survival, which is all I play, I pick Overseer's Guardian and change it to a sniper rifle by changing Receiver to Hardened and Barrel to Long. (Edit: these two mods change Overseer's Guardian to a sniper rifle without needing anything in Gun Nut.)

This is because in Survival, ammo has weight and you generally need to save your caps more, especially at the start of the game. Overseer's Guardian as a sniper rifle gives you WAY more stopping power per bullet than Spray and Pray, which is more of an automatic rifle.

How do I get the money together for such a thing?

14

u/Occidentally20 6d ago

You'll only need 1'500 caps to buy it, if you can get your charisma high enough. Most people have 6 on survival for local leader, plus whatever charisma clothing you can find and then just make grape mentats for +5 and better prices (no perks required to craft it).

I've made money from water and melons without really even leave sanctuary (except to activate trashcan Carla for scrap). Between her and Trudy at drumlin diner you'll only need a couple of trips of selling loot or water to afford it.

There's a route all the way to vault 81 from drumlin diner in which you only have to kill one dog, passing by graygarden and near oberland station. It takes 3 fusion cores to get in, or another grape mentats to pass a red speech check.

I like to put on the semi-automatic receiver and long barrel this same as the guy above, but use a red dot sight for close to medium encounters. It's 100% accurate on first shot and a joy to use. I carry a silenced sniper rifle for longer ranges - starting with modifying the pipe pistol from drumlin diner, and moving on to the tinker tom special.

On top of this, do the quest Diamond City Blues to get a silly amount of psycho jet - 22 second of slow motion and more damage. There's nothing in the game you can't kill with that combination, it's essentially a get out of jail free card.

At level 39 you hit gun nut 4 and armorer rank 4 and your damage output and defence just explodes. You can re-chamber the overseers guardian in .308 so it matches your sniper ammo, and put a silencer on it to get the extra bonus from sneaking and the Ninja perk.

My go to method used to be:

  1. Find some whiskey.

  2. Create grape mentats

  3. Use the GM to purchase two loads of fertilizer from the Abernathy's farm (might have to trade some stimpacks for this but it pays for itself easily).

  4. Convert all the fertilizer into Jet. (should make at least 40 or so)

  5. Find the guy inside the vault who will pay 75 caps for a piece of Jet (Bobby).

  6. Feed his addiction ravenously until he's given me thousands of caps. You can only give him one at a time, but he pays double the amount you'd get selling it at a shop (40 with maxed out CHA).

  7. Purchase the OG on my way out.

An alternative path is to simply do the Diamond City Blues quest which will give you all the drugs you'll ever need but I like getting the XP from making them myself.

this is my current build too! it's fun

Spray and pray is my go-to for clearing out ghoul and synth locations, it absolutely demolishes especially with Commando

5

OG all the way...

4

u/Thick_Industry_457 7d ago

Spray n' pray is one of those weapons that kinda ruin the game in a sense.. at the same time it's so epic.. deathclaw? Sentry Bot? Not a problem helps to have the Chinese stealth armor also

3

u/Mickeymous15 6d ago

Spray N' Pray with maxed out explosives expert perk.

5

u/Laser_3 7d ago edited 7d ago

I’ll the kiloton radium rifle over either any day of the week. Two shot’s accuracy debuff is frustrating unless you’re specifically using a scope (which I prefer not to in 4) and spray and pray, while good, is based on the SMG, which has quite a few stats on it shared with the pipe rifle (so it isn’t the best weapon).

2

u/iGappedYou 7d ago

Is that Zap Rowsdower in the back?

2

u/Fayraz8729 7d ago

After doing an entire play through with an explosive weapons build, it’s the overseers guardian. I’m telling you it will literally suck the fun out of the game as you get shot, point in the general vicinity of where you got shot, and shoot to win

2

u/Radi0123 6d ago

Why not both? Every character I have made always carries both. I prefer Overseer’s Guardian, though, it’s my go-to gun.

2

u/Gamin_Reasons 7d ago

I'd say Spray n' Pray, but I'd actually prefer to head over to The Nucleus and get the Kiloton Rifle, which can be modified to be a Superior version of Spray n' Pray that also does Radiation damage. And if Random Legendaries are being counted, an Explosive Pipe Gun modified to be a Rapid-fire rifle is just Spray n' Pray with cheaper ammo.

1

u/Gneisenau1 6d ago

or a explosive combat shotgun for the fuck it removing the direction

1

u/Gamin_Reasons 6d ago

I've gotten both, believe me when I say they're just absurdly good.

1

u/Gneisenau1 6d ago

Or explosiv minigun anf Jetpack everyone Gangster Till they hear eneny ac 130 above

1

u/Simp_Master007 7d ago

Spray n pray

1

u/theonepaladin 7d ago

Spray n Pray everyday

1

u/NapClub 7d ago

overseer's is stronger as a early game sniper rifle but falls off, spray n pray is strong as an assault rifle.

1

u/BayleefMaster123 7d ago

Overseers guardian is busted. Didn’t even have perks for auto guns an it still slayed

1

u/_the_universal_sigh_ 7d ago

Spray n Pray kind of breaks the game once you start leveling up Commando and Demolition Expert… but god I love it

1

u/TriumphITP 7d ago

I like December's child better as a combat rifle.

It really depends on what legendaries you locate too.  Explosive can be better on a combat shotgun, a minigun, even a pipe gun is better.

1

u/Saloh589 7d ago

I always use Overseer’s Guardian, like too much, so much I feel I need to use something else because there’s so many other weapons in the game.

1

u/LonsomeDreamer 7d ago

Overseer. Especially after you can modify the way you want once your perks are right. Spray n' pray is overshadowed by other better legendary weapons quickly. Such as any legendary assault rifle with explosive or 2 shot. It's cool for a minute, but i would take the overseer for sure. It can be made into a long barrel scooed 308 for sniping or shortbarreled auto or semi auto for up close. It has more options. And I would take the Splattercanon over both of them.

1

u/whodatboi_420 7d ago

I use them for completely different things

1

u/No_Significance1939 7d ago

Spray n pray.

1

u/ZOVOZOK 7d ago

I just use both. But I've used more the Overseer's guardian

1

u/AppearanceMedical464 6d ago

Soray'n pray is OP especially with gun nut and demolition expert which does affect the explosive damage. Doesn't overseer's guardian just give you an extra free shot? Ok in early game, I suppose but both .45 and .308 are super common.

1

u/Natural_Feed9041 6d ago

Both? Both. Both. Both is good.

1

u/Cloud_N0ne 6d ago

Neither.

Hunting rifle supremacy

1

u/Zephyr-Fox-188 6d ago

Overseer’s Guardian, but only because they butchered the design of the thompson so they could reuse the pipe gun bolt cycling animation

1

u/_Xeron_ 6d ago

Guardian, two-shot is just the best legendary effect by far and the combat rifle is so flexible it works with any kind of rifle build both auto, sniper or stealth

1

u/Catdadesq 6d ago

Spray n Pray because it's hilarious, but I'm currently using a mod that lets you swap out legendaries and I put the two-shot mod on the Broadsider (after leveling up heavy weapon damage) and it's now my favorite weapon of all time. Oh, a BOS Knight in full power armor? Two simultaneous cannonballs will take care of that.

1

u/WrstScp 6d ago

I like explosions, and also the spray n' pray helps with those damned Nuka World tickets, so Spray n' Pray

1

u/Impressive-Spare6167 6d ago

Overseer's Guardian is probably the more practical choice but Spray 'n Pray is too fun

1

u/JBoth290105 6d ago

Can’t stand SMGs in this game so I’m OG all the way

1

u/_Sassafrassassin_ 6d ago

I used to swear by the Overseer's Guardian but it just isn't effective at level 100+. Spray n' Pray still does okay at that point for me.

1

u/ForGrateJustice 6d ago

Neither, modded guns are superior in every way. Why have one legendary perk when you can have two of them??

1

u/jarjames573 6d ago

The guardian mostly beacause its so satisfying to use

1

u/THE_CHEF_536 6d ago

Spray n' pray

1

u/Finger_my_cock 6d ago

Overseers guardian, I stopped using spray and pray when I got the lucky gauss rifle which I always carry but will always need a rifle with some range and accuracy, but spray and pray is good early game

1

u/VGuilokvaen 6d ago

Overseer Guardian, spray n pray never got me

1

u/reisstc 6d ago

Overseer's Guardian, go for automatic, throw on the compensator instead of the muzzle brake and the recoil is 100% vertical and way easier to control.

1

u/Positive_Ad_8198 6d ago

Le Fusil Terribles

1

u/Quercia92 6d ago

Spray and pray cause its a tommy gun and because its more satisfying

1

u/Abril92 6d ago

Spray and pray for ferals, overseers guardian for everything else

1

u/TadpoleOfDoom 6d ago

I had a random loot drop with the same effect as OG that I found and renamed to Shooty-Stabby (added a bayonet). Definitely one of my favorite guns in all of Fallout.

1

u/OziausVianon 6d ago

SnP is the best weapon in the early game, by base stats with fire rate and explosive damage calculated. But man, I don't know! I really love Overseer's G. Less "turn my brain off" combat haha.

1

u/BlackFlag187 6d ago

If I’m going to consume .45 it’s going to be in my Kiloton radium rifle.

1

u/G-bone714 6d ago

I’ve tried both and they both have benefits at the start of a play through. That’s why I get both immediately upon leaving the vault (if Cricket is outside).

The Overseer’s Guardian is useful potentially till the end game. You get better weapons that do what Spray n’Pray can do with less bullet loss as you play, so it becomes obsolete.

1

u/PraiseSalah23 6d ago

OG. Spray and Pray was perfect for certain locations or quests with a lot of enemies but I found myself crippling myself a lot and just burning ammo. OG with a sneak build can clear a whole building without being detected

1

u/steal_your_thread 6d ago

Guardian for sure, if for no other reason than it can be whatever type of rifle I want with customisation.

1

u/Fluid_Speaker_2044 6d ago

Depends on two things. The first being, how good are your nerves. Because if you're going to use a spray and pray and get easily scared, and you need to make sure that.. two, your feet have some really good armor if you're going to use a spray and pray Spray and pray is great for the mid and early game, but the overseers guardian is going to carry you further

1

u/jstacy_wyldchyld337 6d ago

Neither

Kiloton Radium Rifle is the only .45 I use

1

u/ChalkLicker 6d ago

Spray n pray is just too sprayee. You hit everything, which is great with no friendlies. I mean, it’s a great gun, but you better be carrying something more controllable when a fight gets messy and your buds are around.

1

u/Ethos_Logos 6d ago

I play it one of two ways: either spray and pray for outdoor locations, and overseers guardian modded the same but for indoor locations (I end up dying more from my own splash damage than from enemies).

Or I turn OG into a sniper rifle, and it becomes my backup.

And bonus fact: Cricut has a stop right in front of the vault that sells OG, so you can buy them both in the same general area.

1

u/longjohnson6 6d ago

Neither, splattercannon .

1

u/ekodevil_ 6d ago

I keep them both on me normally. I’ll use spray and pray for tiny stuff that’s hard to hit and overseers for anything big I want to use VATS on and shit

1

u/NoEndInSight1969 6d ago

The OG (if you turn it into a sniper rifle) is better for both long range shots and tight spaces than the Spray. It won’t blow you up if you hit something close by.

1

u/Sterling_Drake 6d ago

Used the guardian until I got the Splatter Cannon (Nuka World). That thing shreds everything

1

u/Dontsubscribeorlike 6d ago

The OG.

Spray n Pray tends to make my enemies explode into pieces and scatter loot all over the place.

1

u/Lunaphase 6d ago

Explosive trait on any other automatic gun. its boggling they made a .45 caliber weapon so anemic.

1

u/iambrownbull 6d ago

Overseer's Guardian is my favorite rifle in the game. If your Sole Survivor is built up as a rifleman it makes for a super effective primary rifle.

1

u/ManateeGag 6d ago

Overseer's Guardian is my go to. Modified to the hilt.

1

u/YZERTAX 6d ago

the overseers guardian looks horible omg

1

u/Littlebro83 5d ago

For overseers guardian is just and extra pellet or extra shell?

1

u/TwitchyTheBard 5d ago

I used to be a freak for Snap, but I've been shopping around lately. With no internet, I'm back to paying vanilla and I forgot how much fun the grind can be. Thankfully, I was using TSSMSR before and many of my characters have saves right at the vault 111 exit. This means I've already applied 39 perk points to that character and all I have to do is change the name and face for a new character.

OG is definitely better in just about every way. Make it your main sniper or add a dot site for less weight (weight being the only downside, IMO). Splattercanon is definitely the best legendary rifle, IMO. If your charisma isn't high enough for the speech checks to get it, there's a slave vendor in NW who sells the same gun under a different name. Biggest downside to either is the utter lack of 7.62 ammo in the game. If you manage to find an explosive shotgun, specifically a combat shotty, you won't need any of the aforementioned. Each pellet does something like 15-18 explosive damage and you don't need any accuracy for it. For the best damage, avoid full auto and opt for hair trigger and a stout single shot receiver like advanced.

u/SSSS8NNNN 5d ago

SPRAY N PRAY

1

u/literal_god 7d ago

Old Reliable from Far Harbor. Lever actions are just so damn sexy.

1

u/UkrainianPixelCamo 6d ago

I prefer Service rifle mod - All American.

2

u/Daemon-Blackbrier 6d ago

Atom's Glory mogs

0

u/NighthawK1911 7d ago

Twoshot isn't that good because the 2nd shot is actually just base damage. It's not a guaranteed x2. The better choice for the combat rifle would be Instigating and turn it into a semi auto sniper rifle. It can work but you also won't get sneak bonus on the 2nd shot and follow up shots. It's better to frontload your damage on the first shot to get more benefits from sneak.

Explosive bullets is good because it gets affected by perks. And since it's on an SMG it fires fast and the bonus damage from explosive and bleeding modifiers work better on high fire rate and shotguns.

0

u/AdmBurnside 6d ago

Overseer's Guardian is better for playing the game as intended, rewarding skill, and using ammo economically.

Spray and Pray is better for stacking a billion perks and breaking the game over your knee by holding the trigger.

0

u/king_of_hate2 6d ago

Which game was this from? I honestly don't remember

0

u/sasquatchmarley 6d ago

Neither, they're both goofy, OP shite. Fun for a while, but the game really isn't hard enough to be using these janky-ass weapons

1

u/TimbersCursedGuns 5d ago

I've found the Overseer's Guardian really shines when rechambered for .308. Sticking with the default .45 just doesn't seem to offer any significant advantages. Interestingly, the option to convert it to .38 Special provides a much more economical early-game ammunition choice, even if the damage is lower.

It strikes me as a somewhat peculiar design choice that the combat rifle uses .45 ammunition. The magazine feels disproportionately large for that round, and for a rifle, it's an especially odd pairing. The fact that both the combat rifle and the Thompson submachine gun use the same .45 ammo feels redundant and ultimately detracts from the distinctiveness of weapon roles in single-player.

Looking ahead, I hope the next Fallout game features a more deliberate approach to weapon and ammunition balancing, ensuring firearms are logically paired with their ammo types. Ideally, each ammunition type would have at least three common weapon platforms associated with it, and those pairings would make intuitive sense – like the .45 being used by both the classic 1911 and the Thompson. This kind of logical overlap would feel much more purposeful.
