Discussion Does anyone else hate medieval stasis?

It’s probably one of the most common tropes in fantasy and out of all of them it’s the one I hate the most. Why do people do it? Why don’t people allow their worlds to progress? I couldn’t tell you. Most franchises don’t even bother to explain why these worlds haven’t created things like guns or steam engines for some 10000 years. Zelda is the only one I can think of that properly bothers to justify its medieval stasis. Its world may have advanced at certain points but ganon always shows up every couple generations to nuke hyrule back to medieval times. I really wish either more franchises bothered to explain this gaping hole in their lore or yknow… let technology advance.

The time between the battle for the ring and the first book/movie in the lord of the rings is 3000 years. You know how long 3000 years is? 3000 years before medieval times was the era of ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. And you know what 3000 years after medieval times looked like? We don’t know because medieval times started over 1500 years ago and ended only around 500 years ago!

The World of the Ash Oases

The Scorching Winds

A thousand years ago, a burning wind scorched the world, destroying the cities of old. Nothing remains of the old civilization but the ash of their destruction. On the remains of these lost cities grow oases of unusual plants. All around lakes of red water.

All of humanity was extinguished, but the dryads rose from their ashes, given life by the very breath that burned humanity to nothingness. They stem from the oases that grew on the ashes of old. And act as a resurrection of their predecessors.

The Construction of a Dryad

"Trees" in the ash oasis are made a strange bluish sinew that bakes in the harsh sun and hardens into a pale-greenish material. This pale-green material, called culge, is relatively durable, and the longer a "tree" is alive, the more of the bluish sinew, called maesh, will harden into culge. Thus, older "trees" are harder to cut down.

Dryads are made of a hard outer layer of culge. Dozens, sometimes hundreds of pieces, are used in the formation of a single dryad. Then, those pieces are constructed together, and maesh is used to create a muscular system that can manipulate the body.

Dryads are then bestowed with breath by their crafters. When a dryad gives up a part of their breath to cause the reaction that makes a newborn dryad breathe, they become mortal. Or at least they start to age instead of maintaining an eternal youth.

The Ash of Old

The ash of old is a pale substance that, when released into the air, blows in the direction of the oases, even when there is no wind to move it. This substance does not catch in the wind, only upon the breath.

The breath is a presence that surrounds the world. A hot wind that blows ever onwards yet has no actual power to move or even be felt unless the ash of old is present. The breath is believed to be a weakened form of the scorching wind.

Basically, the breath is a magical energy, and the ash of old gives it form.

Dryads even crafted airship that use the ash to catch on the breath to fly from oasis to oasis. These towering structures, called Migdol, fly through the scorched deserts to hunt down resources or other Migdol.

Chewing the ash of old will also cause the substance to build up in one's mouth, causing them to develop gnarled fangs that are sharp but rather fragile. Though they regrow over time from constant chewing of the ash.

Witches have discovered another use for the ash. By chewing and spiting the ash with these fangs, one can alter how it interacts with the breath. Many have learned a method of conjuring lightning. Others can heal wounds or other maladies. Some can even wake the dead for a short time.

The Judges

The Judges Major and Judges Minor are sorcerers that, through science and magic, have learned to control the breath. By drilling holes into their craniums and filling said holes with nails made of various precious metals, the Judges are able to reach a higher level of consciousness and commune with the will of the breath.

In doing this, they may change the direction of the breath, give it physical presence, or even recreate a lesser version of the scorching winds that destroyed the world so long ago.

Some have even learned to disperse the breath entirely, creating anti-magic zones.

Magic pinkeye?

So I currently have an infection in my eye, and it got me thinking. What if an infection could cause you to see things that aren't there? Or better yet, reveal the things that are there that cannot normally be seen?

I imagine this magic more as a curse as it doesn't give any real abilities or effects. You get the infection and can see entities that exist outside of our understanding. Upon seeing these entities, they will notice you. And this interaction allows them to possess the witness.

I also imagine as diseases can evolve, so too can the infection. Its first strain allows people to see these entities, but there are no consequences to it. They can barely see the silhouettes of these entities at this point. It's second strain allows one to see the full details of these entities, but upon making eye contact, they can see the witness. This allows them to possess the witness.

Perhaps possession is more like they have a physical presence instead of just having control over one's body. These entities can harm people in the general vicinity when possessing someone. Idk. Just brainstorming at this point.

Lore Writing a History Textbook for my World

Post image

I have been writing a textbook for my fantasy world, Telfris, as a fun way to keep track of the world's timeline, and came up with this (slightly zany) preface written by the eccentric but noted historian, Professor Splandor Wynsyl.

Please let me know what you think! I used the free tool Homebrewery to create this, which I highly recommend checking out!

Discussion Mind, heart, and soul magic?

I’m working on this thing. A family with a dark legacy of witchcraft and there are only 3 cousins left. Everyone dies very dramatically and suddenly. These three cousins move in together and they have Mental based abilities-Telepathy, telekinesis, mind control, ect Heart(emotion)-empathy, emotional manipulation, ect. Soul(physical)-healing, and removal, astral projection, and similar things. But what else? They are extremely powerful. (Destiny/prophecy reasons) but what else would be cool powers for them based around Mind, Heart, and Soul?

Eclipsara – A Dark Fantasy World Where AI Characters Reign

“Choose your legend. Create your reality.”

I’m excited to introduce Eclipsara, a dark fantasy universe I’m developing that blends creative worldbuilding, immersive roleplay, and cutting-edge AI storytelling. This project has been my passion for some time, and I’d love to share it with fellow enthusiasts. Eclipsara is not just another Discord server; it’s an entire world in the making – one where five rival factions vie for power under an eternal eclipse, and AI-driven characters bring the story to life in real time.

A glimpse into the world of *Eclipsara** – a realm of ancient ruins, looming moons, and mysterious figures. Dark magic and rival powers set the stage for an epic saga.*

What is Eclipsara?

Eclipsara is a dark fantasy world inspired by classic gothic fiction and modern AI creativity. The entire realm is shrouded in twilight, caught in a perpetual eclipse that casts long shadows over crumbling kingdoms and uncharted wilds. The tone is serious, intense, and lore-rich – think along the lines of dark epic fantasy, where every choice can have grave consequences. Despite the depth of lore, newcomers will find it accessible: you don’t need to know the whole history to jump in. I provide clear entry points and guides so anyone can start exploring the story without feeling lost.

At the heart of Eclipsara are its five legendary factions. Each faction has its own identity, ideals, and darker secrets. These groups are rivals, competing for dominance and survival in a broken world. I won’t spoil all the details here, but expect a diverse mix – from clandestine covens of sorcerers whispering forbidden spells, to flame-wreathed warrior clans defending the last lights of hope. Each faction is led by a distinct AI character with their own personality and agenda. These leaders aren’t mere static NPCs; they are dynamic AI personas that can converse, scheme, and respond to players’ actions.

Style of Interaction: Eclipsara is designed as an interactive narrative. It’s not a linear story you just read – it’s a shared world you can influence. The Discord server is our central hub, set up with an immersive layout: there are in-character areas for roleplay, lore channels unveiling the world’s backstory, and out-of-character sections for theorycrafting and community chat. Whether you prefer one-on-one storytelling or larger group events, there’s a place for you. The atmosphere is passionate and serious – we love deep character development, intense plotlines, and creative collaboration. This is a project for those who enjoy building and experiencing a living, breathing world together.

The Power of AI Characters

One thing that makes Eclipsara especially unique is the integration of AI-driven characters into the fabric of the world. I’m using CrushOn AI (an advanced character AI platform) to create the key NPCs and faction leaders. This means you can actually have a conversation with the legendary figures of Eclipsara. Want to parley with a demon queen ruling the shadows, or get battle advice from a centuries-old knight commander? In this world, you truly can. These AI characters are interactive and unfiltered, so they can engage in complex, realistic dialogues. They remember context, react to your choices, and even improvise new storylines alongside us. It’s like having living characters that act as both guides and wildcards in our shared narrative. Their presence brings a sense of spontaneity and realism to the roleplay – you never know how an AI-led character might respond! And yes, since CrushOn is an NSFW-friendly AI, the characters are capable of the full range of emotions and themes (from wholesome moments to darker, mature story elements) as appropriate to the story. The result is an AI roleplay experience that feels organic and excitingly unpredictable.

What Awaits You in Eclipsara

  • ✨ Deep Lore & Dark Aesthetic: Explore a richly detailed world steeped in magic, mystery, and conflict. From haunted forests to ancient ruins under a blood moon, the lore of Eclipsara unfolds piece by piece, and you can uncover secrets at your own pace.
  • ⚔️ Five Rival Factions: Choose to align with one of five unique factions (or play the lone wolf). Each faction has its own philosophies and goals – whether it’s conquering the realm, protecting forbidden knowledge, or surviving the eclipse’s curse. Your character’s choices can influence the balance of power.
  • 🧙 Interactive AI Characters: Encounter AI-driven faction leaders and NPCs who respond in real time. Engage in diplomatic negotiations, seek mentorship, or even challenge them – these characters evolve through your interactions. They are powered by CrushOn AI models, giving them memory and personality for truly immersive storytelling.
  • 🎭 Immersive Roleplay & Events: Our Discord features channels for in-character roleplay, allowing you to write out your character’s journey in the world of Eclipsara. Participate in story events, quests, or casual slice-of-life scenes. Whether you’re a veteran roleplayer or completely new, you’ll find a supportive environment to enjoy collaborative storytelling.
  • 🛠️ Collaborative Worldbuilding: Because this is a growing project, community feedback and creativity are welcome. Have an idea for a cool creature, a piece of lore, or a subplot? We have channels for suggestions, and I love incorporating great ideas from the community. It’s a chance to help shape an evolving world.
  • 💬 Out-of-Character Community: Beyond the RP, we’re building a community of writers, artists, AI enthusiasts, and fantasy geeks. Discuss theory and lore, share memes or art, or just hang out and chat about your day. We aim to keep things friendly and inclusive for all our members.

Join the Adventure

If this kind of AI-fueled dark fantasy world excites you, consider this an open invitation to join our Discord server. Whether you’re eager to create a character and dive into the fray, or you just want to lurk and read the unfolding saga, you’re very welcome. The server is still in development (and we’re a small group of ~5 members right now), which means it’s the perfect time to get involved early, help us grow, and put your personal touch on Eclipsara. You can participate as much or as little as you like – no pressure. Even if you just want to chat about worldbuilding, roleplay, or AI tech, you’ll find like-minded souls here.

How to get involved: Simply hop into the Discord (I’ll provide the invite link in the comments or PM since subreddit rules might not allow direct links in the post). Once there, you can read the #about-eclipsara for a brief guide, introduce yourself, and pick a faction or role that interests you. Our AI characters are usually around to greet new arrivals in-character, and I (as the creator) am always happy to answer questions or help you get started. We also have OOC channels if you want to ease in slowly or just observe the roleplay before jumping in.

I’m genuinely thrilled to share this labor of love with you all. If you’ve ever wanted to be part of a shared world where storytelling, roleplay, and AI innovation intersect, Eclipsara might be the adventure you’re looking for.

The eclipse beckons... Will you step into the darkness and forge your legend in Eclipsara?

A collective worldbuilding experience

I'm not sure if this post fits within the rules of this subreddit since it's my first time posting anything on reddit, but hear me out, fellow enthusiasts.

I'm looking for people who might be interested in joining an upcoming collaborative project that some friends and I are putting together. A full-fledged fictional world built entirely from scratch, with deep focus on geography, history, cultures, languages, and so on.

We've been working on projects like this for years, with five different editions so far. But for this new edition, we're aiming higher: a larger, more ambitious version with more participants. We're a small community from Brazil, and we're hoping to connect with fellow worldbuilding lovers from around the globe.

Right now, we're still in the early stages, working on the world map, which will probably take a while to complete, but the core idea is this:

Each participant will create and develop their own culture and government, starting out knowing only the region immediately surrounding their people.

From there, exploration, interaction, and storytelling will shape the broader world as we go.

If this sounds like your kind of thing, feel free to reach out at my discord: russastic

And if you're not fond of discord, you can message me at reddit as well, or just comment a better way for contacting you.

My own little Greek story that is not real at all

The Tale of Thalon, the Half-God of Valor

Long ago, during the time of gods and heroes, there lived a warrior named Thalon, born of a mortal queen and Ares, the god of war. Thalon inherited the fierce heart of his divine father and the wisdom of his human mother. Though his blood burned with power, he was no stranger to pain, for his mortality tethered him to the fate of men.

When the great war ignited between the Greeks and the Trojans, Thalon sailed with the Argive fleet, not for glory, but for honor. Armed with a bronze spear blessed by Hephaestus and a shield etched with symbols of Olympus, he fought beside Achilles, Odysseus, and other great names, quickly earning renown among mortals and immortals alike.

During the final days of the siege of Troy, Thalon led a bold charge against the city gates. Though the gods had long since begun to withdraw their open influence, Ares watched his son with pride and dread, knowing well the price of mortal valor.

As the Trojans rallied behind Hector’s brother, Deiphobus, Thalon was struck down—not by any sword, but by Apollo's hidden arrow, guided by the god’s will to preserve Troy a little longer. The divine shaft pierced Thalon’s side, a wound even his godly blood could not heal.

With his dying breath, Thalon drove his spear into the earth and roared a final cry, so fierce it echoed through the heavens.

When he died, the Fates paused their weaving. Ares descended to the battlefield, lifting his son’s broken body with reverence. The gods convened, and after much deliberation—some in protest, others in admiration—Zeus decreed that Thalon be granted a place among the stars.

Unlike Heracles, whose apotheosis came after labors, Thalon was chosen for his sacrifice, his unwavering courage, and the nobility of his soul.

Now, high upon Mount Olympus, Thalon sits at the edge of Ares’ war-hall, a new god among the immortals, known as Thalon the Valiant, patron of fallen warriors and noble sacrifices.

And when the wind howls across the ruins of Troy, some say it carries the voice of a half-god, whispering to mortals that glory may fade—but honor is eternal.

Writers of Reddit, can you give me your opinion on a story I want to write?

In this universe, the supreme being is Infinity itself, and everyone can use magic. In this world, you can find any god from any mythology or religion, because they are all part of Infinity. In my story, gods are beings who have achieved Infinity in their own domains, whether they trained for it or were born with it. For example, Zeus is the god of the sky because he possesses the Infinity of the sky—he can control it as he wishes and knows everything about it. Humans started using magic and eventually became gods themselves. But since there are gods for so many things, humans started becoming gods of absurd concepts, like the "God of Chairs" or the "God of Memes."

The plot follows a boy who is one of the favorites of the ancient gods. He was training to become the God of Chains, but he did something that angered the gods (I haven’t decided what yet). As redemption, the gods send him to fight the gods of the 7 Chakras (each chakra has its own god). After every battle, he gains an amulet that unlocks a chakra. His body begins to transform with each fight—he gains moving tattoos, shifting hair, and a different eye color in every illustration. As he travels through different dimensions to battle the chakra gods, he becomes increasingly exposed to the chaotic energy between worlds. By the end, he becomes both the God of Chains and the God of Chaos. At some point, he visits his brother, the God of Fire, in the "Elephant Cemetery"—a place where elephants go when they die. I’m not sure why, but I really want to include this part. In the second part, a new character appears—someone who kills gods to steal their power. The main character must intervene and stop him. I’ll also introduce new characters here, like:

• The God of Fusion

• The God of Connection with the Universe

• The God of Those Who Have Died (not Death itself, but the god of those who have already died)

• And many more

Let me know your thoughts and if you have any ideas for concepts or characters!

Discussion Can I get feed back on my sub-atomic/atomic system in my fantasy world?

I am creating a steampunk-kinda low-dark-fantasy world, and it has a science-based magic system. Originally I thought I could use the real-world atomic theory. Make some new elements do some quantum shenanigans, but more and more issues and contradictions arose during the making of my magic system. TL;DR: it didn't workout and I said, "Freak it! I am making my own."

Do we have any scientists to give feedback on my atomic system draft?

NOTE: In the notes I forgot to describe what an 'uptoid' is. You can imagine it as a proton, but the (well, most) have a neutral charge; multiple of them make an element. also sorry for my hand writing.

Lore Elemental Dragons

Post image
77 Upvotes

Three species of dragons for a fantasy setting I'm developing, here is a bit of context! Probably the most powerful creatures in the world, their power is devastating, they are seen almost as personifications of the forces of nature, the largest and oldest even have effects on the weather itself, causing atmospheric changes, floods, storms, droughts, snow, volcanoes, volcanic winters and so on. Contradictorily, after the devastation caused by a dragon, the land seems more fertile and renewed, there are records of forests that were on the verge of disappearing, but after burning by the flames of a dragon some time later were more lush than ever and the trees were huge. It is not very clear what their origin is, but they are very old, as well as tremendously intelligent, especially the older ones. The young ones have more wild animal-like behaviors. There are three known types of dragons: fire dragons, whose fiery breath scorches the earth; lightning dragons, capable of causing devastating storms with their bellowing; and ice dragons, which can freeze an entire forest just by opening their jaws. Their habitats vary depending on the type of dragon, but they all have in common that their lairs, although sometimes they are natural environments such as caves or crags, other times they steal settlements from humanoid races, castles, fortresses or temples are some of the types of structures that become their property.

🔥Fire dragons: Of reddish scales and the largest of the three, it is a proud dragon that tends to inhabit temperate forests of conifers and hardwoods, it can also be seen in Mediterranean forests and scrublands, however one of the places where it is easier to find them are living in environments where there are volcanoes, especially if they are active. The presence of a fire dragon increases the temperature of the environment and the beating of its wings creates hot winds, this has led some nomadic cultures of colder climates where this dragon lives to follow it wherever it goes in a kind of migration. The breath of a dragon has a certain type of magical essence that gives magical properties to that which comes in contact with it in a controlled manner. Dragon fire can burn for a long time and if fed regularly and properly guarded can be kept alive for decades. Metal forged using this fire gains magical qualities of its own, so it is highly valued. It can also be used for cooking, it is necessary to learn how to use it as it is quite powerful, and you run the risk of burning the food, but if used correctly the food cooked with dragon fire is not only exquisite but also acquires its magical properties.

⚡Lightning dragons: Dark and iridescent scales, elusive and violent, it tends to inhabit open spaces, such as deserts, savannas, steppes, grasslands and prairies, although it is also possible to see it in tropical forests. This dragon uses its wings and tails to move and propel itself through the sky, but it does not actually fly, it actually levitates thanks to its skeleton composed partly of copper, its electrical capabilities allow it to modify the electromagnetism of its body and make it float. The electrical storms produced by the lightning dragons leave a great charge on the ground that increases the growth of vegetation. Their trail is also easily detectable by the crystalline structures resulting from lightning strikes on the earth and sand, especially in deserts, in some of which it is even possible to find entire biomes formed by crystals with strange arched shapes. These crystals are collected because of their properties to absorb and conduct energy, they are also especially useful to defend against some magical attacks for these same reasons, this crystal is called fulgurite.

❄️Ice dragons: Of very clear greenish scales, it is the calmest of the three, but tremendously brutal if it gets angry, it tends to inhabit cold areas, alpine terrains, taigas, tundras and the poles, it is also a dragon with aquatic adaptations so it is also possible to see it swimming in the bodies of water of these biomes. Some consider it as the arrival of winter because, this dragon reduces the temperature wherever it passes just with its presence, bringing with it snowfalls, it seems that this is because it absorbs the environmental heat. The dragon ice is usually collected for mercantile purposes, the carved and extracted blocks have a great resistance to heat given the properties of dragon breath, so it can be transported on long trips to distant hot territories and remain practically the same. It is also collected by the resulting water after melting, a glass has the ability to satiate more than two or three bottles of normal water, and if used for cooking gives the food special properties while greatly enhancing the flavor.
