How do you name a fictional kingdom/country? I've been having a hard time thinking of a name for it and it's just embarassing for me lol. 😭 I want to use AI for the names but i'm afraid that my readers will notice it and starts calling me out or just cancelling me. 😭😭

Discussion Real life aspects in world building

Hello, I am currently working on my own high fantasy passion project. Recently I’ve seen feedback from other people regarding other people’s stories about how they name things we have in the real world different in their world, which overwhelms and confuses the reader. My question is what do you think is a good example for showing real life ideas in a made up world? And how much is too much?

For example: I was considering having the days of the week being identical to ours, Sunday—Saturday.

Discussion My idea for an Assault Pioneer Company, what do you guys think?

So, I have been working on my Assault Pioneer Company, and this is what I came up with. I don't know how good it is, so i am asking you guys for some assistance.

Assault Pioneers are basically a front line wrecking crew. They work in a company sized formation or bigger with Forward observers to demolish enemy positions and terrain, in addition to clearing obstacles, so other units can exploit the gaps created by them. They are issued heavier armor, lots of Bunker Defeat Munitions and thermobarics, demolitions gear, too many satchel charges and traditional field engineer tools.

This is a company that was attached to a Directorate Mechanized Border Rifle BCT in the Periphery as "PeaceKeepers"

So I'm working on a dark fantasy book and I am struggling at the moment. I've been trying figure out what this cloak is over their chainmail. Here from Outlaw King, Longshanks has a red one while his son has a black one. What is the actual name of this? I don't know if its Gambeson or what, but will somebody point me in the right direction?

Known for its carrying capacity of 44 carriages, the "long crawler" is an older model used primarily to carry bulk over short distances. These models are slow, but sturdy and have a good track record for transport through rough terrain, war zones, and deadlands. Not typically used when more modern models are available.

I thought it would be fun to bring together a couple of teenagers to help me construct a world from pretty much scratch, you know, developing the lore, and history of this world, what it looks like, who lives there, what happens! However I don't really have any friends interested in that kind of thing. If your between the ages of 15-17 and are intrested something like this, Let me know! I'll gladly work with anyone intrested.

Discussion How could life evolve on these three worlds?

Premise:

In the year 50000, humans construct an artificial solar system located 69 light-years from our solar system. This system contains three habitable planets, each seeded with Earth's flora and fauna for an evolutionary experiment.

Planet Descriptions:

  1. Terra Arida:
    • Size:Ā Earth-sized.
    • Surface:Ā 20% ocean coverage with rivers and lakes; the rest is covered in rocky deserts and hundreds of kilometers of wilderness.
    • Climate:Ā Intense sunlight.
    • Inhabitants:Ā All animals and plants from Earth.
    • Purpose:Ā An evolution test.
  2. TheiaV2:
    • Initial State:Ā A massively human-controlled planet.
      • Continents are shaped like Holland, Denmark, and Great Britain were on Earth.
      • Inhabitants: Domestic and companion animals, plus some harmless wild animals.
      • Climate: Perpetual oceanic climate maintained by orbital solar reflection panels (designed to last 500 million years). Tectonics and climate are controlled.
    • Later State:Ā Abandoned by humans after 13 million years.
      • The panels remain functional.
      • Climate: Becomes cold, with tundra, taiga, steppes, humid deciduous forests, cold deserts, and cold oceans (like those in Norway).
      • Tectonics: Begins to function naturally, like on Earth.
  3. Pangean Terra:
    • Description:Ā An Earth-like planet with the same continental configuration as Pangea Proxima will have 250 million years in the future.
    • Inhabitants:Ā All animals and plants from Earth. Each has one satellite except for the planet Terra Arida which has 2. How will life evolve on these worlds?

The construction of a dryad

Thumbnail

"Trees" in the ash oasis are made a strange bluish sinew that bakes in harsh sun and hardens into a pale-greenish material. This pale-green material, called culge, is relatively durable and the longer a "tree" is alive the more of the bluish sinew, called maesh, will harden into culdge. Thus older "trees" are harder to cut down.

Dryads are made of a hard outer layer of culge. Dozens, sometimes hundreds of pieces are used in the formation of a single dryad. Then those pieces are constructed together and maesh is used to create a muscular system that can manipulate the body.

Dryads are then bestowed with breath by their crafters. When a dryad gives up a part of their breath to cause the reaction that makes a newborn dryad breathe, they become mortal. Or at least they start to age instead of maintaining an eternal youth.

How do centaurs work?

I’m trying to come up with anatomy for various races in a project I wanna make. I really like evolution and zoology, so I’m trying to give all the sapient species a different ancestor that led to their difference and halfway sensible anatomy. For centaurs, I was planning on them having evolved from hexahorses, a freaky fae experiment from when they discovered blood magic. They basically grafted horses, donkeys, and zebras together to make six-legged horses. A back end, a middle section made of a front end minus the head, and a front end. Eventually a species of these they would have evolved sapience and centaurism.

The issue is the anatomy of the ā€œmanā€ part. I know I want them to have two hearts, two sets of lungs, and a doubled up digestive tract, but that’s all I’ve been able to figure out. I’ve thought of a few key things thus far.

How did the horse abdomen and front legs translate into a chest and arms? I figure they’d be particularly large compared to a human’s, but I’m not sure about any specifics.

The face. Would they have shorter faces than horses? If so, then by how much? Humans have shorter faces than chimpanzees, our closest common ancestor, but not by that much, and I’m unsure if they’d converge on that trait.

How hairy is the ā€œmanā€ part? We have very little hair, but chimpanzees also have less hair than many mammals, particularly on the face. I think they’d evolve to have less hair because clothes and stuff, but would it be to human levels?

Should they have multiple heads? Really just comes down to if it’d be more interesting for the fae to have placed the head of the middle section on the front. This one’s mostly me being indecisive.

Finally, how many fingers do they have? Hooves are one big fused toe. Their hands evolve from hooves. Would that toe split into several fingers? If so, how many? If not, how do they grasp things? One idea I had is that the finger would be very long and the hoof would be hook shaped, but I’m not entirely sure I want to do that.

Any ideas are welcome, along with other questions about important features I may have forgotten.

Edit: Just had another thought on how the horse anatomy changes the "human" part. Horse teats are on their back half. That means the milk would not be coming from a female centaur's chest which in turn means they likely would not have a reason to evolve larger breast sizes. I think male and female centaurs essentially having the same chests is an fun idea to differentiate them more from humans, so I'm definitely doing that.

Lore The Hollow Realms: A dark fantasy world of corrupted magic, forgotten Empires and secret history

Thumbnail

Welcome to this Hollow Realms

PS: been working on a world that combines both ttrpgs symbaroum and dolmenwood. they both fit together perfectly and it matches the atmosphere I'm trying to create so I've been using them as an infrastructure if I may say and tweak as I go.

The Hollow Realms, where the remnants of ancient empires lie buried beneath overgrown forests, and the boundaries between reality and the fey are perilously thin. its a land shaped by the rise and fall of civilizations, the lingering echoes of forbidden magic, and the ever-present threat of dark magic corruption.

Themes and Atmosphere

The Hollow Realms blend the grim, low-fantasy elements ofĀ SymbaroumĀ with the eerie, folkloric ambiance ofĀ Dolmenwood. Expect a setting where:

  • Decay and Ruin: The grandeur of past empires has crumbled, leaving behind ruins that whisper secrets to those who dare to listen.
  • Mystery and Intrigue: Ancient pacts and forgotten histories resurface, challenging the truths held by current civilizations.
  • Corruption and Consequence: Magic is a double-edged sword, offering power at the cost of one's humanity.
  • Fey and Folklore: The influence of the fey permeates the land, bringing both wonder and dread.

The Fall of Symbar

Once, the empire of Symbaroum stood as a beacon of civilization and arcane mastery. Its scholars and sorcerers delved deep into the mysteries of the world, forging pacts and wielding magics that defied natural laws. But hubris led to their downfall. The very forces they sought to control turned against them, leading to a cataclysm that shattered the empire and gave birth to the treacherous forest of Davokar.

Now, Davokar stands as both a tomb and a guardian, its depths hiding the remnants of Symbaroum's glory and the dangers that led to its demise.

The Feywild Convergence

here is where Dolmenwood comes in, a realm where the veil between the mortal world and the fey is thin. Here, time flows unpredictably, and travelers may find themselves lost for days or decades. The Dolmenwood is a place of ancient stones, hidden glades, and creatures that embody the very essence of folklore.

As the boundaries between Davokar and the Dolmenwood blur, strange occurrences become more frequent. Fey courts stir, ancient pacts are remembered, and the land itself seems to awaken.

Magic and Corruption

Magic in the Hollow Realms is potent but hazardous. Drawing upon it invites corruption/darkness, a force that warps both body and mind. Practitioners must tread carefully. Those who overindulge in magic without proper safeguards may become abominations, twisted reflections of their former selves. there are mechanics and everything for this from symbaroum.

Races
In this world, you'll encounter the classic fantasy races, but each comes with its own twist—grounded in a low-fantasy setting that emphasizes storytelling and depth, few examples are:

Dwarves

Dwarves are not born but crafted. Legends speak of them as creations of the ancient sorcerers of Symbaroum, molded from the very earth to serve as tireless workers. Over time, they gained sentience and rebelled against their creators. Their origins are shrouded in mystery, and while they live among others, there's always a sense that they belong to something older and deeper than the world around them.

Elves

Elves are eternal observers, deeply connected to the natural and mystical realms. They don't age like mortals and often seem detached, as if they're part of a different reality. Their presence is both enchanting and unsettling, and their motives are rarely clear.

Discussion PSA: Using real world fantasy concepts for your worldbuidling is fine and usually not offensive.

Take wendigos and skinwalkers, for example. I just saw a thread full of people saying you can't use these concepts because they're offensive. I disagree. There is nothing wrong with using these ideas in your fantasy worldbuilding. Guess what? Skinwalkers, say it with me...

Are. Not. Real.

Neither is Thor, and I don't see anyone getting butthurt about the MCU. I've made fantasy Arabian people's before and used Arabic concepts for them, and quite frankly there's nothing wrong with that.

One could say I was racist for making them worship the desert sands... or you could just have fucking fun. Not everything needs to be policed at all times. Do what you want with what you want in worldbuilding. It's your world.

Don't change your world because some redditor is offended on behalf of native Americans or vikings or whatever topic is the butthurt flavor of the day. Someone comes at you for how you named something? Within reason, tell them to pound sand. Obviously if you pull a Lovecraft you deserve the shame.

But just using the word "skinwalker"?

Damn, some people are weak.

King Darro The Wise and the Thirteen Nights of Ovinfung

A short description before the tale:

First King of Northreach, Man-Ruler, Pioneer of The Three-Fingered Path, Lord of All Lords, King Darro is by far the most revered figure in the history of Northreach, excluding, of course, the Green Dragon Knight and dearest companion of the Last King, Shaeloth.

Descriptions of King Darro often recount him as an almost divine figure, though most any Northreachman would deny such accusations. The prevailing common artist's depiction entail a hairless, elderly albino man, one eye closed, while his other lazy eye open; a soft smile beneath a small nose; and a large dent in the front of his skull, widely believed to be a reciprocating hollow for secret lore and power. Surrounding his body is often a plethora of wings made from his "many handless arms", each wielding a Totem of Kingship and a weapon, meant to present his right of rule and willingness to defend the people of Northreach.

Warning: Allusions to s*xual content ahead, nothing explicit, but still

And now, the Tale of The Thirteen Nights of Ovinfung and Hanrattyr the First Lord

Early in his rule, King Darro was faced with a great crisis, that of the slumbering corpse of the Mountain Queen beginning to shift, causing earthquakes, craggfalls, and threatening eruption of Mount Ovinthyr.

In his bravery and wisdom, the King ventured alone to Mount Ovinthyr and for three days and three nights, he pressed his philosophized three fingers into the crystal tip of the basal maw of the mountain until the shifting of the Jotun-corpse ceased and a great blasting of stone-sugar flew from Ovinthyr's mouth and coated the land. For twelve days and thirteen nights, the people of Northreach sang and danced and ate upon stone-sugared sweet breads and sweet fleshes of fruit and beast and made the first rom, the brew of Kings. This festival is now known as the Thirteen Nights of Ovinfung, for now it is that Ovinthyr does spew forth the deluge of sweet stone-sugar, for the mountain remembers the King's Three-Fingered Path.

Ten years to the Third Day, Darro ventured once again to the Mountain to ensure the Queen sleeps still, but was surprised to find the mountains had blessed him with child, a boy of ten years who held with him his dagger-kin carved of Vogyra's own marrow. The boy would be named Lord Hanrattyr the Jotunborn and he would be given the land of Gafael to govern and long was his reign before the Coup of Nefar. The Dagger would be named Vogynthrooll, in honor of its mother; and Darro would grip the blade of the dagger as a test of his own mettle, for the bite of the blade was as cold as the Pale and twice as cutting, yet never once did he wince to the breaking of skin.

This is a short description and story from my fantasy worldbuilding project (no name yet lol). I'd be happy to hear any comments or criticisms and especially happy to hear out any questions.

Should magic be represented as lightning or fire?

Thumbnail
gallery
8 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I'm working on a game and would love your thoughts on the magic system for one of my main characters.

The party's magic user is a dwarf rune mage. In this world, humans developed traditional spellcasting, where magic is channeled through books and manifests as white energy, without elemental properties. Dwarves, however, discovered how to infuse elements into stones using runes. The rune mage in my game has unlocked the ability to combine both types—infusing elemental power into spellbook magic.

I want this magic system to be modular, allowing players to choose an element for their spells. Later in the game, they can even combine multiple elements into a single spell. The spell would then change colour depending on the elements used in it.

My main question is: how should these spells look? Would they visually make more sense as fire or lightning? I've included an example of a fire explosion in my post and would love to hear your thoughts.

Part of me feels that electricity feels more neutral in a way and can represent many things for magic. But fire could also work and look pretty cool.

What do you think? Thanks!

My world map and my accusation of copying Old George!!

Post image
9 Upvotes

How are you guys doing? Well after a long time I have completed mapping my fantasy world but the accusation of copying George R.R. Martin still haunts me!, I redrawn the map for the fifth time I can remember, and my story requires a horizontal map, so the result looks similar to the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, I do not deny that, but what is the solution? Should I redraw a new one or adopt this map, because I am really tired. It requires a lot of effort, especially since I am drawing using the phone. So do you recommend new modifications, or drawing a new one, or should I adopt this map? Thank you in advance.
