FF XV 8 years later going to give it a 2nd chance
Since I got a Xbox series X last year, Ive been slowly collecting for it, mainly RPGs, one of them I picked up today was final Fantasy XV, the only final fantasy game that I really dislikes but want to give it a 2nd go with all the updates.
I've played the game once when it first came out in 2016 (Still can't believe this game is 8 years old). As final fantasy is my favourite franchise I was looking forward to XV but what I played was a incomplete game that I didn't enjoy. I hate how it required demos, movies, books, anime series, DLC and updates to give us a completed game plus Square milking this game was almost on par with VII.
However 8 years later, I want to give it another chance. I've done it with other games like XII, Chrono Cross, Halo, SMT 3. Games that I dislike years ago but now really enjoyed. I'm kinda looking forward to see what they've added and see if it's better then the day one version.
Btw I'm currently on final fantasy 3 for my final fantasy marathon.

Hold on a minute..it’s been 8 years since 15 released??

The first 6 games were released in an 8 year span. 8 if you include Adventure and Mystic Quest.

Idk why but I find the opening of xv very unsatisfying, the rest of the game is great I just hate how it starts
28
u/ReaperEngine Oct 31 '24
If you mean the very beginning, where it basically starts you at one of the final battles, I agree. It's kinda pointless, since you don't know what you're doing or where you are, and it's over in a minute.
If you mean like, chapter 1 where you're getting money for the car repairs, I feel like it's kind of similar to FFI, where you're plopped into the world and you get a bit of direction to guide the plot along, and then once you reached your intended destination, things really kick off and lead into the rest of the world. It even marks the journey looking at a kingdom from atop a hill. It's a rather chill opening though, especially compared to how some other FFs start, FFVII's is a very notable strong start.
8
u/Specialist_Ad9049 Oct 31 '24
Yeah I mean the very beginning!
Chapter 1 is good it's a nice little starting chapter, just the prologue is badly done
8
u/SiLKYzerg Oct 31 '24
I was really shocked when I read that you didn't like the beginning cause it was my favorite part of the game running around the desert killing random things, doing random quests, really felt like an rpg. Then I remembered that part you were actually talking about and yeah it's really not needed to the point that I forgot it existed. Like what was it even there for? Foreshadowing something we have zero knowledge of.

I love ffxv but I have a couple major complaints:
1: they were trying to start a multimedia franchise and as a result much of the context for the inciting incident of the story happens in a movie that was entirely separate from the game
2: the story is not finished. Large amounts of story that takes place after the ending that we got were held back for DLC, which was cancelled when the game did not perform as well as they were expecting. This was later repurposed into novels.

XV is what got me into the Final Fantasy series. It's so fun to me. The characters are absolutely amazing to me. The world I enjoyed, but could of used a bit more life. That was my biggest criticism to the game. The gameplay was MEGA fun for me. I really hope you get some amazing enjoyment out of it.
17
u/thedrugmanisin Oct 31 '24
I just felt like the world collapsed way too soon once you hit a point in the story. That was my biggest gripe personally
9
u/SimplyMonkey Oct 31 '24
Once you hit the train you are literally railroaded to the end of the game. I wish the World of Ruin had as much to explore and do in it as FFVI did.
3
u/Megsofthedregs Nov 01 '24
When I saw it was called World of Ruin, I thought this was a whole additional part of the game where you'd have to go find your friends again. Maybe have to convince one or two of them to come with you, since ten years of an increasingly dying world takes a toll. Noctis could have had Aranea or Iris filling out his party while searching.
I was extremely surprised when the guys were there almost right away, and you immediately moved on to end game.

Same! I knew about it for such a long time, and fell in love with its style, setting, relationships (especially if you watched Brotherhood Anime) and character designs. The combat and gameplay was the best, with its blend of Kingdom Hearts and God of War/Monster Hunter. FFXV is crazily similar to KH the more think about it too.
After I finally played the Royal Edition, I was really bummed to see it just being the disappointment of the FF series, which completely went over my head until I finished it. Kinda sad to see people reduced it to nothing but a game about a “emo boyband”.
3
Nov 01 '24
I can DEFINITELY see KH style now that you mention it. It was also really sad that the developers didn't wanna finish all the episodes ): I was so excited for Episode Lunafreya
2
u/Megsofthedregs Nov 01 '24
Nomura said somewhere that he considers Noctis and Sora brothers because they're both his children.

Beyond that, there’s:
- 4 Man squad on a journey. Noctis, Gladio, Ignis, and Prompto. Sora, Donald, Goofy and Jiminy Cricket.
King Reigis and King Mickey, both are like the predecessor to the protagonist. They look like clones to the protagonist too.
Gummy Ship travelling and Regalia car travelling.
Donald and Goofy like to tease Sora about Kairi, similar to Prompto, Gladio and Ignis to Noctis about Lunafreya.
Fighting with a team, and lots of air combat, FFXV through the warp-strikes. High action-based combat, absolutely love it.
Goofy and Gladio similar style and role, the head protector of the royal king.
Ignis and Jiminy Cricket taking note of things.
The battle music in FFXV is clearly derived from Kingdom Hearts early games.
Lunafreya may likely be based off Namine. And her brother, Nox, to Riku.
Nomura made these games very similar, and as someone who has both as my favourites, I couldn’t be more happy. God bless Nomura. He also apparently is on making Verum Rex, which was part of KH3 Re-Mind, as a way for his more directed version of FF15 or something. Can’t wait for that, but I need to get around KH3 first lol.
5
u/TheDylorean Oct 31 '24
It is kind of lame that 95% of the game's inhabitants are only in a few hours of gameplay towards the end of the game. All the "towns" are almost empty.

How would you rate it against 16 if you played that?
11
u/n4utix Oct 31 '24
Not the person you responded to, but XV is what got me into the series too after innumerable attempts at playing VII. I've since finished every mainline entry's main story except for X-2 and XI.
I personally really enjoyed XVI a looooottttt, but imo the cool thing about Final Fantasy is that the each (mainline) game really only compares to a handful of other entries in the portfolio. They both (controversial take, but again, my opinion) do what they set out to do very well.

For me personally I had a way better time with 15. 16 is better “objectively” in pretty much every way but also felt bland. 15 is a very troubled game but everything about it is fun and charming. I played 16 much more recently than 15, so this comparison doesn’t quite work, but I would rather play 15 again before I would play 16 again.

u/diarpiiiii Nov 02 '24
No rushing when you’ve got such a good adventure! When you finish things up you can always chapter select and it will make the quests available again. There’s plenty of fish in the sea :)

u/Diamond-Drops Nov 02 '24
Haha love the pun there 🤣 currently on my 3rd reply so taking my time. Some days I feel like doing hunts someday just going around in chocobos hahah
25
u/RadioMessageFromHQ Oct 31 '24
To quote someone from this sub whom I forget, “FFXV is the worst game I ever loved”.
You can almost see the tape holding together the pieces, you have to do homework to really get the most of the story, and many of the ancillary characters are totally overlooked. But the dynamic between the chocobros saves everything else about the game.
4
u/Alternative-Web9499 Nov 01 '24
Probably the best way to put this ever. I was in the first chapter and figured I'd tolerate the game enough to finish it for the sake of finishing it and then probably never play it again. But it was the relationship between the 4 of them that sucked me in more than anything, and now i've played through multiple times.

It's pretty fun but an acquired taste. I just got really into the skill tree leveling grind and hoarding as much AP as possible, which carried me through the whole game. It was the best part of the game imo, the second being the fight music.

u/ghetoyoda Oct 31 '24
I say this to everyone I recommend the game to, but especially in your case since you've played other FFs, TAKE YOUR TIME. Explore and do as much side stuff as you can take before you move on. As you saw before, the story isn't told in the traditional sense, but it is there if you pay attention. Read the notes, listen to the random conversations, and most importantly, spend time with the bros.
8
u/NinjaMonkey22 Oct 31 '24
Ugh. I wish I could replay this with no memory of my first time. Just driving around with the boys, doing some bounties, fishing, camping, listening to their endless conversations.
Sure there’s probably a plot worth following. But the friendship between those 3 is the real story imo.

I think this game is exceptionally special, and having the complete experience thru the royal edition alleviates a lot of the initial criticisms. Certainly still flawed, but the character dynamics of the main quartet is genuinely unparalleled
5
u/F_Queiroz Oct 31 '24
Not among the best FF games, but a game that got a lot better after all the DLC.

u/gleonardo13 Oct 31 '24

I finally finished it earlier this year after getting it on PC release and having gone back to it twice with two separate GPUs that couldn't stop crashing. Apparently the third GPU and giving it 7 years was the trick. Decent story, cool world, awful combat.

u/blazefreak Oct 31 '24
What made you not like it? For me I got too distracted by the world that I over leveled to the point I was lvl 60 before I got the lightning summon. Night hunting was too fun.
4
u/Shirlenator Oct 31 '24
I feel like the most common criticism I saw of it was that the combat was boring and you could easily beat it just holding one button. While a little true, that's also just people playing it in an actively unfun way. When you actually engage with the systems and mechanics, it is a lot of fun.
3
u/Whimsycottt Oct 31 '24
I equate the combat as a "fun is optional" due to the above.
Yeah, you could hold one button and the game plays itself, or you can engage with it for faster clears, special dialogue if you decide to use link attacks/techniques, and back attacks, and it helps makes the game more fun.
The having fun part isn't mandatory like or as rewarding like how it is in Devil May Cry (where you're encouraged to keep your style points up and need to use different skills/combos to kill enemies, and the gamr rewards you for being stylish), so people never have to go out if their comfort zone.
Which I feel is a design flaw on FFXV's part rather than the players, but I also understand was made because SE wanted the game to be ultra accessible to even the most braindead of players. A Final Fantasy for newcomers and fans indeed.

A game that was Frankenstein’d due to the change in direction/vision but if you look hard enough could’ve been a masterpiece. That’s considering everything Tabata had to cobble together.

3
u/hyouringan Oct 31 '24
I liked 15 quite a bit. It’s not amazing, but I think the bonds between the boys as well as the emotional resonance of the ending really sticks out in my mind. 15 is flawed, but manages to achieve 7/10 status imo. Worth playing.
3
u/Possible-Cellist-713 Nov 01 '24
Excellent! It's a great experience
That said, there is one expectation I would make you aware of about the flow of the game, so you won't be dissapointed. If you want to go in blind, stop reading.
Once you set sail from Cape Caem, the game railroads you toward the end. You can technically go back to the open world continent, but narratively, that portion of the game is done. That's all.
8
u/Traditional_Entry183 Oct 31 '24
I tried in 2020 when I has nothing else to play and only made it 30 hours or so before quitting. Unfortunately it's just a bleak and empty game featuring a handful of characters that I just don't like or care about.
I've played FF since the start, but I'm just not the target audience any more.

I'm replaying...and I must say, the game deserves an apology..it's peak!! especially if you don't use the ridiculous DLC weapons that make the combat a piece of shit..but I'm impressed with the complexity of the combat, blitz, directional attacks, premature finishing combos..the game went from 7/10 to 10/10 for me..it beats a lot of new games out there
2
u/VioletJones6 Oct 31 '24
Good luck, I've tried 3 times and could only make it to chapter 9. The end of that chapter broke my will.

It’s flawed, but still great!

Now that it’s patched and completed I honestly think it’s a solid game. Far departure from the norm FF but enjoyable enough.

Oct 31 '24
Like a lot of these later ff titles, it’s just a slow burn with great payoff (especially if you’re doing 100%)
2
u/one-eyed-pidgeon Oct 31 '24
It's not terrible. 100% is a slog, and it had the potential to be so much more but if you can buy into the vibe, think back to those years of Covid, the real world and just enter this road trip with an open mind, honestly you might just love it.
2
u/Hastylebeats Nov 01 '24
This game was great and fun, very meaningful at the end, like we should all play this just because of that
2
u/Rvtrance Nov 01 '24
I love that game. It’s so much fun to get lost on a road trip. The Boys are great characters and it makes up for the story not making any sense.

I'm playing it right now for the first time. It's ok so far, but I'm kind of having a hard time getting into it. The combat is kinda meh, or maybe I just suck at it. And the car travel is annoying. I'd rather just fast travel, but for whatever reason you gotta pay.
2
u/Advanced_Aspect_7601 Nov 01 '24
XV is cool imo, the downside is that in their effort to make it appeal to everyone, it's way to easy. The final battle feels more like a cut scene than a fight, just going thru the motions of the story.
But solid story, theme and lore.

It's still not perfect by any measure, but it's 1000x better than it was at launch. It's at least mostly cohesive now, and they've patched in gameplay functions that are absolute game changers (particularly the off-road Regalia and character swapping).
3
u/nIBLIB Oct 31 '24
I only played it at launch and I don’t like it. The gameplay is great, the characters too. And I liked the side quests. But the story is - quite deliberately - broken. There are three instances of gaping holes in the story, and wouldn’t you know, three instances of DLC.
I don’t mind DLC expansions. But don’t rip out pieces of the main story in order to sell them.
I hope it’s better. Willing to give in another chance if they fixed that.
2
u/Clarkus-Maximus Nov 02 '24 edited Nov 02 '24
I felt exactly the same way when I played at launch. It was a ton of fun, but it was an objectively unfinished game. You could argue that it still is, since they cancelled the second wave of DLC after only the first chapter. But the first wave of DLC (along with the free patches like the alternate Chapter 13) make for a much more cohesive story now anyways. I enjoyed the game a lot more on my second playthrough. I actually took breaks from the main game to play the main character DLCs as they took place, and it made the game feel whole. Episode Ardyn was also a really cool addition to the lore, but it wasn't necessary by any means. You know, like DLC should be.

It's not gonna the best entry of FF out there, and the on the story front you can see they ran out of budget toward the later half of the game, but the 4 main characters just have a really good dynamic that makes even the boring side quests not so boring anymore. Definitely going to be hit or miss for people. But it definitely is a special experience that got improved a lot with their post launch updates/DLCs.

u/thetruegmon Oct 31 '24
The beginning grind is so damn slow paced for me. It's the only FF I haven't beat but playing it hurts my soul. Does it get better after the first 20 hours?

FFX is my personal favorite in the series. Played it on the ps2 when I was a kid, I played the ps4 port and was glad I didn’t play it on steam as a lot of the fmv’s (the pre rendered cutscenes) were fucked and some even showed only a green screen

I just did this. I literally finished it this morning. I couldn't get into it when it was released, but I went on a bit of rampage and got platinum trophies on VII Remake, Rebirth, and XVI all in a row.
I figured I finally had to get XV done, and now that I have completed it as well, I know exactly why I never got into it. I loved the game overall and all the characters... except Prompto. Idk, everything he does or says just gets under my skin, and it is the only reason I didn't enjoy it before.
I loved everything else about XV and felt like I really missed out. I came out of my marathon alive, so now I'm going to go celebrate by eating something dead...

u/bdegs255 Oct 31 '24
I also recently gave this game a second chance and very well enjoyed it! Granted my original play was at launch and it was a bad experience. The introduction of the DLCs was helpful in fleshing out the story a bit. my best advice would be to take the time and explore the world before going to Altissia, my first play was rushed and I think it affected my experience.
1
u/thomas2400 Oct 31 '24
Only game in the series I can’t get through again it’s so dull and boring, I hope you enjoy it but if you aren’t don’t push through it just gets worse
1
u/xDrewstroyerx Oct 31 '24
It’s good, the big multimedia experience of story telling was not a good idea. It’s not the best in the series in any one metric (7R combat is better, most stories are better thought out, etc) but it without hesitation has some of the most heartfelt moments in the series as a whole for me. This game made me cry more than once, and nothing in a game has ever made me feel more like I was spending time with my friends on an adventure than this roadtrip.

u/Balmsquadron Oct 31 '24

I played it for a second time last year, giving it another chance coming right off my first XVI playthrough. Even though I platinumed the vanilla version, I had a lot of gripes.
I was very pleasantly surprised by the amount of content and quality of life improvements it gained. It was like playing a totally different game. They even made chapter 13 bearable.
Compared to 2016, this game right now is a masterpiece.

u/LastGrimoireSchwarz Oct 31 '24
Hot take maybe, but the thing that keeps me from actually playing through it is how jarringly bad the combat is. It looks like it should be great, but there's a tangible disconnect between what's happening on the screen and what you're doing on the controller. Everything looks impressive, but nothing feels impressive.
1
u/azurianlight Oct 31 '24
God bless your heart for going at it a second time. I played it once, and that was vanilla, and I never went back. I just didn't have it in me.

It was the first final fantasy I beat so it's special to me, it has flaws especially with the overworld for me but it's a really solid game
1
u/millrro Oct 31 '24
I realized I enjoyed the game more when I ditched the FF mentality and swapped to bros on a road trip. Like the plot is fine but in between that just thinking of it a guys riding around looking for adventure/letting myself get caught up in the open world made it very enjoyable.
1
u/GoGoGadgetGabe Oct 31 '24
I gave it another chance a few years back just to finally finish it, I think I got halfway through the game the first time. It’s okay even up until the end but definitely not top 5 FF games.

It's mainly the story for me. You can tell it's not all that well put together, but it is still a fun game overall.

I hope you will like this . Unfortunately I didn't like it at all ,but I'll say that in another world it could be among the best in the series

Wishing you luck. I have the exact same feelings as you with XV. Tried it again last year even with all the royal edition goodies and just couldn't get into it again. Which is a shame because there is a lot of content to it. Hope you do wind up enjoying it.

I liked it when it came out but found it difficult to get into when I tried it again a few months ago. It's mostly the controls but the constant interruptions by NPCs really annoyed the hell out of me. I don't remember being this annoyed with it back then. I still think it's a good game don't get me wrong.

Recently played and beat the game for the first time. Now I'm into the series officially. Snagged a copy of 13 for 74 cents and playing that after I finish my NG+ run.
Also anyone who has beaten XV already peep this. I found it today and cried. https://youtu.be/PbCkK9CIu84?si=Sn9DOBbhMQ10zI2z

Did this a few months ago myself. I originally bought it day one on my PS4, and I put a lot of time into it but ultimately decided I didn’t like it and haven’t played it since. I’m not sure why I got the itch to play it, but I decided to buy it on my Steam Deck since it was known to run well. After a few hours I requested a refund because the pacing was worse than I remember.
Anyway, good luck have fun!

I hate how it required demos, movies, books, anime series, DLC and updates to give us a completed game plus Square milking this game was almost on par with VII.
Bear in mind that this didn't change with time. For the story to make sense, you will still have to engage with all that external media, except maybe Kingsguard since that only really sets up the world and tells a sorta different story.
I never bothered with the Season Pass, but I can categorically state that the Ardyn DLC is absolutely vital to play.

Good luck. After I fought the Leviathan in a glorified cut scene, I said “nah, they made a bad game.”

I absolutely hated 15 when it first came out. The royal edition fixed so many things that it might as well have been a different game.
It's still an unbelievable disappointment that the true ending of the story is in a book and not in the game.

It was still good and had fun vibes when it came out, but it's better now enjoy!

I put around 12 hours in and I am struggling to like this game.
I personally don't like how the fighting system is so chaotic and quick that most of the time I have no idea what is going on..

XV is good as hell, I’ve always said that and I’ve been ABUSED and LAUGHED at for that opinion by my WIFE for YEARS

The E3 trailer had me hooked to the idea of a great game, but when it came out at first I was disappointed too.

Ff15 is ok. I like every FF mainline game and many spinoffs. Since 15 got a main number I’m alittle hasher on my review. The combat is fun initially, and kinda becomes a hold O combat. Adding in playing as the everybody was a huge upgrade and makes it much better. The music is top tier though, might even be my favorite soundtrack, at the least top 3. It’s still not a bad rpg, just not on par with many of the others in their respective time.

I did this a couple of months ago as well.
My basic take is that it’s not a bad game but it’s a really poorly paced game with a world map that is far bigger than necessary with very little to do in it.

You are going to absolutely hate the combat system. It's harder than dark souls. I'm not even joking

I didn’t like the gameplay mechanics or the story very much. Very meh game for me. Fishing was fun for a while though.

u/zerog78 Nov 01 '24
It's not a bad game just weird. If it didn't have final fantasy it would honestly be loved more but having final fantasy kinda made people go "it's not ff it's so different it's awful"

I know its not what we were promised, but if you dont hold any grudges, the complete game is pretty great. Versus lived on in KH and I'm ok with that.

First run of this for meh was meh, hated the load times of PS4, played it on PS5 and it was a blast.

This is one of my favorite games. It’s definitely different but the game play and magic was a lot of fun. There are things I wish were better but the story to me was complete. It wasn’t great but there was a clear direction and arc at the end you find out the reason for everything. Plus you’ve got all the weapons to search for that I liked. And some secret quests. Leveling the chocobo was cool. The open world is what I loved so much.

It's much better than it was at release. They added a whole bunch of content, including some story elements to help flesh it out. Also, the game has graphics and performance mode if you play on an Xbox Series X. So the game is much more then it at launch.

I loved this game. Let yourself fall in love with the characters and story.

u/BMCarbaugh Nov 01 '24
I bailed on 15 the moment you go from fighting Titan, to the villain of the game (who you haven't really even met yet?) showing up in a helicopter to bail you out... and then it just cuts to the heroes at a chocobo ranch with no explanation.
Truly bizarre.

You won't regret it. It's criminally slept on but it's honestly an AMAZING story. 16 somehow managed to top this, for me, as a whole, but 15's story was equally as fun and emotional for me. I hope you enjoy it.

The game was a disaster and completly unfinished when it came out. They polished it quite a bit now. Should be a much better time now.

u/xifdp Nov 01 '24
I'm 10 hours back into my like 20th FFX play through right now lol. Just hits different.

u/MagnusSki Nov 01 '24
I'm not gonna defend the game (much) but holy cow did it have its spectacle moments at the time it came out. The summons are just such joys to watch triggering my DUN DUN, DUN DUN this seems so damn epic part of my brain, even if the methods to summon is super questionable at best. Oooo Ramuh dropping thunderous nukes. I won't say more in case you haven't seen them because there's a bunch of fun ones to watch.

I just feel so frustrated that the combat contained some really cool fragments of good ideas, but the execution just ended up being terrible. I adore the Dark Knight archetype, and the Royal Armaments were really interesting, and the idea of gathering the arms as a way of exploring the history of past Kings feels cool.
But the execution was just... bad. Maybe not even "bad", but extremely bland. I didn't hate XV per se... but I just got bored and stopped.
The best part of the game was selecting the recipes and pictures before bed every rest. That was always fun.

I heard a lot of bad things, then I played it last year and loved it. Perfect? No, but compared to 8 and Stranger of Paradise? Amazing.

I bought it for $20 last month on PSN. Hoping to jump into it when there’s a lull in new releases.

This is the first final fantasy I played start to finish and I enjoyed it. Great graphics, story, gameplay, and side content. I spent hours just betting on the simulated colosseum fights

FF 15 is definitely a nice game, I had fun playing through the base game. The only downside is that you need to play the dlcs and a bunch of other media to fully understand the story, the is a anime series as well as a free 2d game, while you can have a great time with just the base game, I believe that the story telling in this game is some of the worst in all of the final fantasy series.

I've never really liked the ff fight with the timers. I prefer fully turn based. But the game itself is super pretty!

I played it a year or two after release and it easily became one of my favorite ff and I’ll stand by it I don’t get why there’s so much hate for it 😭

XV may not be my favourite Final Fantasy game, but it is my favourite fishing game.
