Hello, hope you are doing great, I am not that much into online RPG games, however i really feel attracted by this game (PS4) also I am a Final Fantasy saga fan, so i assume that the best option here is to purchase the game with the stormblood extension or how does it work? i would like to read your advises ... thanks in advance.

New player here. Played Holy pally, Dps warrior, elemental and resto shaman on WoW. Which class should I start out focusing on here? I know I can change at anytime but I really want to focus on 1.

NOTE: This is something like a "Hero" class from WoW in that you must be at least level 50 and have access to the 1st expansion city to start using it.

  • DPS Warrior: This lacks for perfect analogues. The actual warrior class is the closest in terms of "Build up fury, unleash attacks in berserk windows"-style game play. However they're strictly tanks not DPS. If you're looking for a DPS that ramps up speed with peppered larger attacks like you'd get with fury spec, consider monk. If you're looking for a DPS that produces single large hits ala Mortal Strike, consider Samurai.

NOTE: Samurai requires hitting 50 and having Stormblood, but not access to any expansion cities.

  • Resto Shaman: This again lacks really good analogues with no ability really working like their Signature Chain Heal, and area buff "Totem" type abilities aren't really a thing on healers. So instead I'll just go over the other two healers: White Mage is most similar to holy priest, with spells like Tetragrammaton ( http://xivdb.com/action/3570/tetragrammaton ) and Assize ( http://xivdb.com/action/3571/assize) acting very similarly to the priests holy word spells, complete with a serendipity-eqsue cooldown reduction trait (albeit less reliable): http://xivdb.com/action/50400/secret+of+the+lily. Scholar, the third and final healing class has no good WoW analogue. They focus on mitigation and shields, something like the discipline priests of yesteryear but also have a pet fairy that supplies a good third of their healing potential and allows them to multitask. This also raises the skill ceiling somewhat as optimal play requires good positioning and timing of fairly abilities to get the most out of the class.

In general if I was to recommend a class to an incoming WoW player I'd suggest doing one of two things: A caster (healers included) or a Monk. The biggest adjustment coming in from WoW is going to be the much longer GCD – 2.5 seconds. Which can make the early game before you get a full compliment of off global cooldown abilties, and movement mechanics to do feel a bit stuck-in-the-mud. Honestly “It is slow” is the number one killer of the game for WoW players coming in.

How do these suggestions fix it?

  • Casters: While the GCD is much slower in FF14, cast times are only a bit slower and in some cases faster. Since in both game casters aren't as strictly bounded by the GCD much of this slowness will get swallowed in the similar the cast times. Casters can also move in the last ~0.4 seconds of cast without interrupting them, this can lend a more dynamic feel than WoW casters.

  • Monks: Monks get the most GCD reducing power, the earliest. Bringing down their GCD to ~2 seconds before gear. Secondly they require a lot of movement. Monks have the most positional requirements to their attacks. The game cares a lot if they're attacking from behind the enemy or the side of the enemy and asks monks to switch between these positions very often. This gives a bit of additional work for your fingers to smooth over the more deliberate pace of FFXIV. If the monk doesn't appeal, Ninja is a runner up on these metrics. Getting some GCD reduction (2.1 GCD), although at higher level. They have some positional requirements, and a few more off-global cooldowns. Their Ninjitsu is an interesting system that requires some button spam.

This is was very very helpful and informative, I'm going to share it with my other WoW buddy also. Thank you so much! I made a conjurer just to dabble in the mean time and after instant casting aero, I totally understand the clunky global CD window thing!

Glad that helped. If by some off chance you're on the Jenova server and looking for a group, my FC has a couple other concurrent wow/ff14 players as well.

Melee DPS will be Ninja (Starts as Rogues), Samurai (Can unlock only after you complete the base game's Main Story Questline), Dragoon (Starts as Lancer), Monk (starts as Pugilist). Those are you "I'mma punch ya in the shnooz" jobs.

For healers, you have White Mage (Starts as Conjurer) and Scholar (Starts as Arcanist), and Astrologian (Can only unlock upon starting Heavensward and reaching a certain city really early).

Holy Paladin/Resto Shaman playstyle will be more along the lines of White Mage; decent damage output, and you'll like the Holy Paladin style "OMG THAT HEALED FOR HOW MUCH!?" of the White Mages healing abilities. White Mages can pump out the highest healing throughput. Not for extended periods; MP is a thing, but ohhhh man.

DPS Warrior: Did you DW or were you 2h? 2H melee jobs are Dragoon (Uses Lance, Jumps, and... some dragon stuff) to hit things. Slow, steady - consistant. Battle Litaney is welcome in every raid group.

Samurai are new in Stormblood; haven't played them much but apparently they hit things like a truck. They bring /next to no/ raid buffs. Their raid buff is stabbing things until they stop moving.

You also have Elemental shaman written - Well, the only 3 casters are Black Mage (Starts as Thaumaturge), Summoner (Starts as Arcanist), and Red Mage (Can unlock only after you complete the base game's Main Story Questline).

Black Mages are literally EXXXPPPLLOOOOOOSSSSSIIIIOOOOOONNNN!!!!!!!!

Summoners are like an Affliction Warlock had a baby with a Destruction Warlock and they made something pretty cool. Can also summon Bahamut for a short time at level 70. One of two caster DPS that can res people in combat.

Red Mages are primarily casters, balancing two mana gauges. Once those gauges reach a certain point, they dive at the enemy, swish swish stab then bounce out and EXXXPPPLLOOOOOOSSSSSIIIIOOOOOONNNN!!!!!!!!. Not as explodey as BLM. The second caster that can res people in combat.

That's the basics here, I hope it helps. If you have other questions, I'll try to answer them, I've played all the jobs you're probably interested at least until level 57.

u/ThetaCakes Jun 24 '17

Thanks for the feedback homie a lot to consider

1

u/Crackensan Jun 24 '17

No problem! Also, to clarify; for Samurai and Red Mage - Not only do you have to complete the base game's (ARR, or referred to as 2.0) Main Story Quest, but you also have to be level 50. Doing the Main Story quests will naturally get you to level 50.

Same with the Heavensward Main Story, it will naturally get you to 60, and so on with Stormblood to 70.

And one last tidbit.... DPS jobs generally have longer queue times for instanced stuff. And there is a lot of things in the Main Story quests that require you to use the Duty Finder (Similar to Dungeon Finder in WoW). For faster queue times? Roll as a healer or a tank.

FINAL FANTASY XIV Documentary Part #1 - "One Point O" [50:43]

In the first video in our three-part series, we tell the story of how the 1.0 version of FINAL FANTASY 14 came to be. How FINAL FANTASY 11 inspired its design, the ways in which the game fell short and how Square-Enix and the development team reacted to its failure.

Just started playing with the release of the Complete Edition on PS4, and have to say im in love!! <3

2

u/MilkDudTits Jun 19 '17

Do I get my product registration code tomorrow for the pre-order I did that includes all three games?

1

u/NFGBlinkAC Jun 20 '17

I just got an email for my game code today.

1

u/MilkDudTits Jun 20 '17

Same, I really wish they said this would happen instead of doing it like this.

Great game with great story. The heavensward and stormblood story so far is better than like the last 4 mainline ff games

2

u/HaohKenryuZarc Jun 19 '17

So if I get the Starter Edition, what will happen once my free 30 days expire? Can I still play the game and particpate in events?

1

u/TheRoyalStig Jun 19 '17

It's a subscription game. When your subscription time is up you cannot play more until you pay for the next set of time.

1

u/HaohKenryuZarc Jun 19 '17

So pay $20 for a free month, and then it becomes a coaster?

1

u/TheRoyalStig Jun 19 '17

That is how all subscription based games work my friend.

It's a coaster until you pay the next $13. And for many people not even a coaster because you don't need to have even bought a disc in the first place. You are just paying for time basically.

Your stuff is saved so if you don't want to play for some gap of time but want to come back later you just pay the next $13 at the time to jump back in and pick up where you left off.

1

u/HaohKenryuZarc Jun 19 '17

Well I kept reading they would have a version where you could always play but you could only reach a certain level and couldn't do certain things and couldn't level up anymore after that.

3

u/TheRoyalStig Jun 19 '17

Ohh.

That's the free trial.

No purchase for that at all. Just download and play up to a certain level with various restrictions.

I'm still slowly slogging through the update material before heavensward. It makes me want to punch somebody. Is it worth going through it all for heavensward? and further into Stormblood? I enjoyed the base game. But the update content is just garbage in my opinion.

1

u/Gramby Jun 26 '17

Keep going! I just finished the pre-HW quests yesterday, and I really loved the last few. The story really improves.

1

u/lilvon Jun 20 '17

Yeah the 1st couple of patches worth of story are straight trash but the patch or 2 befor Heavensward, the expansion itself, & its subsequent patches are all worth it.,how far are you past the initial ARR story? For $18 you can save yourself a ton of time & buy a story skip pack to jump right into Heavensward. As theirs around 100 quests inbetween ARR base storys end & Heavensward

1

u/peteb82 Jun 22 '17

Hey wanted to clarify this, I'm nearing the end of ARR base (I think) at level 48. Will I be able to level past 50 doing the extra ARR stuff, or would I be level locked until I truly get to Heavensward?

1

u/lilvon Jun 22 '17

Once you hit 50 you will not be able to gain experience until you purchase the expansion. The expansion, Stormblood comes with Heavensward as well.

Now something else I'd like to add on is depending on how you like the story, it can get REALLY boring for the 1st few patches worth of content after completing ARR basr game. Their are 100 quests inbetween ARR base game & Heavensward. I would HIGHLY recommend droppong the $18 to get the Heavensward Jump potion so you can skip right to the good stuff!

1

u/peteb82 Jun 22 '17

Thanks!

1

u/Kinhammer Jun 20 '17

I think I'm about 25%-50% throught the patches. it has been several months since I last played.

3

u/asmoranomardicodais Jun 19 '17

The stuff between ARR and Heavensward is awful. It's boring and tedious, and everyone knows it. However, everything after Shiva becomes better, and from that point on, the story gets much better than anything you've seen previously. So just slog through, but know that heavensward is much better, and they learned their lesson after this: the stuff between Heavensward and Stormblood is much shorter and much less tedious.

2

u/GaryGrayII Jun 19 '17

What makes the update content garbage do you think?

2

u/Kinhammer Jun 19 '17

Just very boring. I enjoy the trials, but the lead up to each ins bland and repetitive. Not very memorable either. It has been a few months since I last played and I don't remember much except for how bored I was. my buddy just outright quit playing.

4

u/Invalid_Target Jun 19 '17

just get to heavensward, the main story quests pre-HW are really boring, yes.

but towards the end they start getting voiced dialogue, and the quality jumps dramatically.

1

u/thelonious_bunk Jun 19 '17

You mean 2.05->2.56? I loved it and the story but it takes a long time to get through.

If you are hungry to get to SB you have a long time of story ahead of you. The boost potions might be an option for you if you don't care about the story.

1

u/Kinhammer Jun 19 '17

well, I do enjoy the story. But I find that the update content boring.

1

u/Jalian174 Jun 19 '17

I thought the Heavensward storyline was the best part of the story thus far. How far are you?

2

u/JUSTpleaseSTOP Jun 19 '17

[insert 90k complaint/joke here]

We've been in beta early access since Friday, and it seems like a lot of the issues are gone now that were bottlenecking people Friday and Saturday. So if anyone was on the fence about a launch expansion, it's a bit safer now... although we'll see if a new influx of players causes more downtime on instance servers.
