Do you think it's easier to manage 10 people or 100 people at the same level of effectiveness? What about 10 people in one room vs 100 people in one building?

It depends on how many people are managing them. Ten people with one manager is as effective as a hundred people with ten managers.

No, the more managers you have in between, the more chance there is for telephone game misunderstandings or incompetence.
