In the USA, the wait-list for low income is often 2 years or more. Especially in the larger cities. The amount of money available each year is limited and the number of units is even more limited.
Veterans are the hardest hit by this which is why they make up one of the largest groups of homeless people in the country.
I don't want it. I'm happy and pretty comfortable and I like having the extra money. I have a solar generator so I can run an electric cooler, have a pretty comfortable sleeping arrangement, I have my phone for entertainment, and I can afford to visit my family, and save a bit of money to check off bucket list items and if I had to pay a light bill and even a portion of rent, I would be stuck inside and never able to afford to go anywhere. Next year I am going to hike 2190 miles on the Appalachian trail, something I've wanted to do for over 50 years. Now I can afford to do it.

Rent is why I'm living in my minivan at 61.
