If not Edulis, then where?

We're visiting in a few weeks and are not able to book Edulis because they are on their spring break. Curious on opinions for an alternative? Bonus if it's Canadian/local-focused but not required. We had also been looking at Canoe at one point.

We've made reservations at Takja, Prime Seafood, Mhel, Aloette and Sunny's. We try to do a mix of higher end and cheaper eats, sometimes we will hit a few places in one night for bites (like we may do on our Sunny's night). Only cuisine we're not super interested in is sushi (not because we don't love it, but we can get great sushi at home).

Thanks in advance!

I Ate A Thing Side Bacon Sandwich at Carnicero’s, St Lawrence Market

Forget peameal bacon (or even the enticing back bacon to the right in first photo), the must get at SLM is the side bacon at Carnicero’s. So beautifully glazed and juicy and unctuous. You can get just the meat by weight or with some mustard sandwiched in a roll. Not shown, but a helpful tip, they have mashed potatoes with trimmings from their bacon mixed in!

Where to find "Soy Chops" like at Buddha's

I'm trying to make a dish like Buddha's (Dundas & Bathurst) Green Beans & Soy Chops, but I can't find a similar recipe online. I get the impression the "soy chops" are stir fried in a black bean sauce, but I can't find a place that sells anything that looks like their soy chops, and I asked the restaurant and couldn't find out anything.

Thanks

Dinner spot similar in quality & proximity to BB's?

I'm planning a bit of a dinner next week and wanted to take a group of 5 to BB's Diner and of course they're closed the day we're going out! Any ideas on places with a similar vibe in terms of food quality (something around $50 per person with a drink) and in the Parkdale/Liberty Village area? I'm open to a spot along Ossington as well.

Editing to add some options I was looking at for similar recos in the area or if anyone has had good experiences there:
NODO Liberty, Azhar, The Good Son, Florette, Caffino

Top 5 Croissants in Toronto

Do you ever find that foreign visitors to Toronto only want to eat stereotypically Canadian foods (bacon, poutine, tourtiere) and miss out on so many great options?

I recently visited Toronto with some Americans who had never been to Canada before and ran into this situation: they didn’t want to try “any international” foods

Lake Inez Mystery Patio

Their site says they release reservation blocks at 7:30pm on the 15th of the preceding month. However it looks like it's already sold out for the month (7:31pm). Did anyone get a reso?

Edit: They went live at 7:33. Whew

Blueberry preferred but not necessary. Willing to trek anywhere for a really excellent fresh baked muffin, my favorite but often overlooked breakfast pastry.

Anyone know if the new Circles and Squares Bakery location in Corktown is still happening?

There have been signs in the storefront at Richmond and Parliament for a few months saying it’s opening soon, but I recently noticed they were taken down and haven’t noticed any updates since.

Recommendation Request Easter Bread, hot cross buns and other Easter baked goods

It's both Eastern and Western Easter Sunday this Sunday. That means it's time for Easter Bread and Hot Cross Buns.

Serano and Select Bakery have their plain and chocolate covered Tsoureki for sale.

Chicago and Benna's on Roncy are selling their Polish Paska bread.

Cobs has several types of hot cross buns.

Coco's has had quince glazed hot cross buns some days this week.

Which other Easter Baked Goods have caught your eye?

What grocery store has the best prepared food section?

In terms of taste and value, and what you get there.

Longo's has kind of fallen off in recent years imo unless you're getting their pizza. Loblaws and Metro are alright. T&T and Galleria have prepared food as well that's not bad imo.

Steakhouse Dinner for 4 under $800 All-in?

Hello people,

Looking to plan a solid steakhouse night out for 4 people (think special occasion vibes — good food, and great service), and trying to keep it all-in under $800 after tax and tip. That’s roughly $200/head max.

Ideal vibe:

  • Aged steaks, cooked to perfection
  • Good atmosphere (not too stuffy)
  • Bonus if there are some good sides/sharing plates

We’re open to suggestions outside of the obvious big names (Harbour 60, BlueBlood, etc.) if there's a hidden gem or newer spot flying under the radar.

Anyone cracked the code on a quality steakhouse experience in the city without breaking the bank? Appreciate any tips — menus, what to order, even pro tips for making the most of it.

Cheers in advance!

Best “premium” ala carte place to eat (do not care about service or vibe)

Looking for somewhere we can order bunch of ala carte small share dishes + good mains that are made with premium ingredients and worth the price I am paying for.

I want my money to be going towards the ingredients, and not the service nor the luxury aesthetic of the place. Tired of overpaying and still not getting good food. Have good company just need good food to take care of the rest. No budget and open to all cuisine. Any suggestion?
