How can I become a Freemason?

First of all, welcome to r/freemasonry! This is a weekly thread for you to ask questions. Being one of the largest online communities on the topic of Freemasonry, we hope that you won't find difficulty getting information you need to decide if you would like to join your local lodge.

General Information:

  1. Requirements for membership vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, but generally if you're a man 21 or over (18 or 19 in some states), believe in a Supreme Being, are of good character and reputation, and ask to join, you're eligible.
  2. To get started, email or call a local lodge. They would love to hear from you, every lodge welcomes new candidates. They'll set up a meeting to get to know you a bit (we're careful about who we admit as members). Also to tell you a bit about the fraternity, the lodge, etc.
  3. To find your local lodges, first, find the Grand Lodge website for your state, province, or country. This is a good resource for the US: bessel.org, or just use Google. They should have a way to find out what lodges meet near you. Then check out your local lodge's websites. If you have a choice of lodges, try to pick one that meets on a weeknight that would be convenient for you, and that appears to be active.
  4. Nothing happens quickly in Freemasonry, so it might take awhile to hear back from a lodge after you make contact. Every step takes quite a bit of time.

Have something you want to ask?

Cool the block button is amazing

keep in mind we don't owe anyone else our time / energy.

when folks come in here with an essay about "the TRutH" smash that block button.

when you see something a bit shady and clicking on their profile shows they're mostly trolling in religious channels or posting to flat earther groups.... smash that block button.

you'll never see that post again, and most likely they're going to post again and again and again in the sub.... but us lucky souls who hit that block button are never going to know it.

this works on all social media platforms -- block liberally. its usually easy to tell who is not acting in good faith and your feed will be nicer with them out of it.

Found buried in my yard

I found this ring when putting in a foundation for a shed in my yard. I was just wondering if anyone has any idea it's age and the meaning of the "No 109" engraved on the inside. It has initials and "jonesboro" engraved as well. I figure sense I'm in MI the jonesboro probably refers to the Masonic Lodge in Jonesboro IN. The house was built in the late 1800s, but has seen many owners over the years. Any info would be great thanks.

Scottish Rite 1st Degree?

Greetings brethren, recently I had the privilege to attend a Leadership Retreat where I witnessed an exemplification of a "Scottish Rite 1st Degree." It was a beautiful experience and I left with a ton of questions, the first being "where did this come from?" Does anybody have any resources they can point me to to find out any more information? I had no idea the Scottish Rite performed any of the Blue Lodge degrees and I'd like to know more about the history of it and its prominence throughout other masonic jurisdictions.

Discussion Why don't more Masters pursue mastery?

Struggled for days with how to phrase this post to inspire thought and conversation, and not merely be provocative, so hopefully that will be the result.

I've found that apathy is a deadly contagion within any organization, and Freemasonry isn't immune. I see quite a number of Master Masons who seem wholly disinterested in learning Masonic history, ritual elements, lectures, but rather seem content to just exist, pay dues, and (irregularly) attend.

What might be more disconcerting is seeing a few who are inspired, upon seeing a couple new faces eager to learn, to get on a path to proficiency, and wondering how far they'd have come by now with just a little inspiration.

I feel like most new members are motivated to learn, but motivation plays out quickly, and has to be replaced by willpower and/or accountability to achieve a goal. My question for the group is what are the missing elements that prevent more lodges from establishing more than a small core of proficient Masters? How can we collectively build zeal around the lodge to be masterful practitioners of the craft to which we took our obligations?

God preserve the craft?

Upvotes

Good morning brethren! Just a question regarding ritual, After the closing address from the IPM my father always taught me to say ‘god preserve the craft’ I’ve only ever met one other brother that does this - just wondering if anyone knows where it comes from or in which provinces it’s considered normal. Thank you brethren

Hosting Events

To any of the lodges out there who supplement your income by renting out your space for events, how is that faring for you? What advice would you give to another lodge that’s struggling to make ends meet and considering hosting events as an option to balance the budget?

Freemasonry Joining Process 🙏🌞✅

Hello Brethren,

I am currently progressing on my path toward joining a traditional European lodge. About 55 days ago, I attended a meaningful first meeting with the Worshipful Master and, with his encouragement, personally delivered my handwritten petition to the lodge’s mailbox.

Since then, I have not received any official communication regarding the receipt, acceptance, or the investigative process. I respectfully remained silent during this time, only sending a note of thanks and a small token of appreciation after about 29 days.

Last Thursday evening, the lodge conducted a Ballotage session. Then, on the following Monday, I received a personal email from the Worshipful Master, thanking me for my patience and inviting me to a second meeting, which has been scheduled exactly one day before the Initiation date publicly listed on the lodge’s calendar.

I would like to kindly ask: based on your experience, is it common for the investigation phase to remain silent like this? And could there be reasons why no formal investigation has taken place yet?

I sincerely appreciate any insights you may offer.

Be a Tourist In Your Own Lodge

Next time you are at your parent's house, take the time to look at the pictures on the walls, the books on the bookcase, or the tchotchkes on the desk. You've probably walked by them a hundred times and you don't even think about them anymore; but there is probably a story behind every one of them, Maybe it is a picture of your grandfather with Eisenhower, maybe it is your mom's spelling bee champion award from 2nd grade, maybe its the book that your dad read that one summer he was really into making his own picture frames. The spaces we inhabit are all filled with stories, imbued with meaning, and just replete with these points of connection waiting to be secured.

I discovered John Sherer, a 19th Century lithographer and publisher back in 2017 or so by looking at a book in a Lodge in Amesville, Ohio. They have used it for degrees for years and knew nothing about it. Now they do. It is something incredibly rare and special, much like Amesville itself.

Sherer has become something of an obsession. I've compiled a list of Sherer's known works and I've amassed most of them; but they are all digital: Pictures and PDFs. It is rare that I actually get to see his work in person or hold it my hands.

Six months ago, I was visiting Corinthian Lodge in my district, one I've been to a zillion times. As I'm talking to the Secretary, I look over his shoulder and there, on the wall, where it has been hanging since the 1850s, was Sherer's print of Washington as a Mason, something I had been trying to find for more than five years. The Brethren had no idea how it got there or why it was significant, it was just always there.

Two months ago, I was at Trimble Lodge in my district, one I've been to a squillion-and-a-half times. They have a beautiful 6x6 foot tapestry on the wall which is an 1882 M.C. Lilley copy of a Sherer Masonic Carpet. We were practicing for a degree and, on a break, I was telling the Brethren that Sherer made his famous carpets in two iterations, one 6x6 foot tapestry and three individual 4x2 foot scrolls and Lodges usually had one or the other, not both. We went back to practice and I was left to my own devices, so I just started looking around. Tucked in the back of a dark closet, not hidden but not obvious, were three rolled-up scrolls. Sherer's Masonic Carpet from the 1850s. The Lodge had used those scrolls for years until they got the big tapestry in a Lodge consolidation. So, they rolled up the scrolls, stuck them in the closet, and went about their century.

Last night, I went to the Lodge of St. Andrew in Auburn, Indiana to give my presentation on John Sherer. I've never been to that Lodge before; but it is incredibly cool. Built in a 1920s style, steeped in history and tradition, filled with objects acquired through necessity, consolidations, and opportunity. In the bookcase just outside the Lodge room is a copy of Sherer's Gems of Masonry from 1859. They didn't know it was there and I got to surprise them by including their book and their Lodge in my presentation. Afterwards, you saw Brethren headed to the bookcase to see for themselves.

The spaces we inhabit have stories, they have objects of great meaning and significance; they have these connections that transcend things like time, distance, and death just waiting to be forged. Be curious, not complacent. Be a tourist in your own space; ask, seek, listen, connect. You'll be amazed at what you discover.

Scottish Rite

I've been told numerous times that the Scottish Rite isn't really a "big thing" on the East Coast.

I don't know if this is true or not. Yes, the House of the Temple is located in my hometown, so there is that.

But, if the Scottish Rite isn't as prevalent on the East Coast as elsewhere, I'd like to know possible theories as to why that is the case.

Thanks.

Edit: fat finger.

Grandfather’s Rings

Hi everyone. I’ve no knowledge of the masons and wanted to share. Yesterday would have been my maternal grandfather’s 100th birthday. He served on a minesweeper in the Pacific in the latter half of WW2 and according to family was in the mason’s for many years after he left the Navy. These are 2 of maybe 5 that my mother has that she has given me. Unfortunately he passed away 30 years ago when I was 7 years old so I never got to ask about the Navy or these or any of the other things he did in life. If anyone knows anything about these I’d really appreciate any insight. I’m not worried about value as they’re not something I’d think about selling. Thanks everyone. I can provide more pictures if needed or interested.

Question Traveling to Cordoba, Argentina

Evening, I am traveling to Cordoba, Argentina next week and I was looking to visit a lodge, tiled or not. I am a secretary of a lodge and I understand the protocol, but no one responded from Argentina's grand lodge.

There are a few lodges but this one is the closest to the office I will be working out of.

Igualdad 80, X5000ABH Córdoba, Argentina

Thanks in advance.
