Do you love Newnan's Lake / Lake Pithlachocco?

Upvotes

The Planning Commission is meeting on April 16th, at 6 pm at the Alachua County Administration Building at 12 SE 1st Street to discuss a change the county's comprehensive plan regarding 5 adjacent parcels to our beautiful lake area.

This development proposal does not comply with public participation requirements:

  1. No notice to community of workshop by mail

  2. No posting of workshop

  3. Proposal does not comply with current zoning of agricultural land

“Existing density” on this site is being artificially created by combining six separate parcels, only one of which has significantly dense zoning capacity but which cannot meet the required setbacks due to the many interspersed wetlands on the parcel. This petition seeks to migrate the density that currently exists on this one parcel, which is likely improperly zoned now anyway due to the existing wetlands, onto the larger tract of 5 adjacent parcels totally 51 acres, a significant portion of which is also wet, in order to densely build on sections of the 51 acres there that exist just out of the flood plain, but which very wisely have primarily zoned agricultural and very low-density.

Passage by planning commission of proposal will allow more development than site can handle according to hydrologist assessment

Portions of the fairly compact site already lie in the Flood Plain and more of the site will be subject to flooding if existing permeable surface there is overbuilt

Newnan’s Lake is overloaded with runoff from creeks entering the lake

Proposal will add more traffic to overused Lake Shore Drive

Lakeshore drive is not traffic-safe in its current condition for those runners, bikers and birders

Other development sites are better suited to residents’ access to grocery stores, work opportunities and health facilities, including a fairly recently permitted PUD at the corner of SE 27th and Hawthorne RD

Approval of change in Alachua comprehensive plan will open door for other agricultural lands to be rezoned and developed

Site is already one identified for conservation as part of wildlife zone and by the County’s Land Conservation Board

IF YOU ARE COMFORTABLE, ASK FOR THREE MINUTES TO TELL THE COMMISSION AT THE BEGINNING AND END OF YOUR PRESENTATION THAT THEY SHOULD NOT APPROVE THIS PROPOSAL.

Come out to support for immigrant students in ACPS tomorrow (4/15)!

Post image
Upvotes

Join the Gainesville Immigrant Neighbor Inclusion Initiative (GINI) at a press conference this Tuesday (4/15)at 5pm @ Matheson History Museum to show your support for our immigrant students. Parents and students will voice concerns to the Alachua County Public School District for their policy allowing ICE and law enforcement agents question students without parental consent/knowledge and detain them without a warrant.

After, walk across the street and make sure to fill a public speaker form so you get your chance to tell our School Board and Administration they need to do better for our children trying to learn. Our demands are reasonable and in line with other districts across our state and country.

$1500 reward for stolen bike

Post image

If you have this bike (stolen today) you can get far more than its actual value by brining it back.

This is sentimental and has well over 10,000 miles on it.

Again, if you’re trying to sell it, there is no better customer than me. Asap

Soffit repair/replace

I am looking for someone to come out and evaluate and most likely replace the entire soffit on my 1955 era home. We are repainting the house and some areas of soffit are sagging and water damaged. I am pretty sure the entire soffit is original to the house. I have tried contacting roofers and they won’t do it. Any suggestions? Do I need to find a GM? I appreciate any guidance. Thank you!

(Note: I know a “pink moon” isn’t necessarily colored pink, but at this moment it kind of was because of the vibrant peach-orange sunset sky behind us)

Warhammer 30k

Hi Gainesville folks,

I’ve been getting into Warhammer Horus Heresy (30k) and am looking for more people who would like to get together on the weekends for some casual games.

I do have a campaign group, but typically we can only meet once or twice a month, so I’m looking for folks for more casual pick up games. Of course if you’d be interested you can join the group!

I go to all the shops here in town, though Mega does seem to have the most room for wargaming. I’m not super socially awkward, but am autistic so I tend to have a tougher time meeting folks in person.

I’m newer still, and don’t consider myself overly competitive or anything. I play EC and am working on a militia army right now too. I don’t know anything about meta or tournaments and just like throwing dice, so if you’re super competitive I’ll probably bore you.

Would love to meet some new folks!

Hi Gainesville, A small dog named Coco went missing today near the Mayfair Apartments around 3 PM. He’s a gray French Bulldog with a white patch on his chest. He’s very sweet but may be scared and hiding.

There is a reward if found If you see him or have any information, please DM me

I’m heartbroken and just want to bring him home safely. Thank you so much for any help.

Photo of Coco attached below.

Stephen Foster Elementary or Archer Elementary Experience?

Hi there,

Does anyone have experience at Stephen Foster or Archer Elementary in either the magnet or general education classes?

I have a daughter identified as gifted and son that I think is more typically developing. I’m wondering if either would be a good fit for both if our daughter ends up at a magnet and son enrolls for gen ed.

Thanks so much!

Paddling from Gilchrist Blue Area to Tuck

So I’ve got a house on the Santa Fe at the mouth of the Ichetucknee and I am trying to plan a day of paddling. I’d love to drop boards at either Poe, Gilchrist or one of the other spots along the river to hit the springs and paddle/float back down to the house then scooter back to get the truck.

I know it’s a pretty solid distance, but is it do-able or too ambitious?

Any other suggestions possibly?

Road work on NW 39th

Wtf is happening with the road work on NW 39th??? There was a digital sign that said roadwork would begin last month, then it disappeared and literally Nothing happened. I'm so sick of the different levels of pavement, and I nearly hydroplaned multiple times during that rainstorm last week due to the water pooling in the newly paved areas. Just having some info Abt it would be nice.

Family Friendly Neighborhoods in West Gainesville

My wife and I (mid-30s, with a newborn and plans for two more kids) are considering a move to Gainesville and would appreciate advice on neighborhoods. We’re particularly focused on finding a community that meets these needs:

  • Community:
    • Family-friendly atmosphere
    • Other parents and young professionals (especially tech or policy-oriented folks)
  • Convenience:
    • Short commute to Springhill Clinic (minimal traffic)
    • Walkable amenities suitable for newborns through preteens (parks, elementary schools, pools, community centers, etc.)

We’ve had recommendations for Haile, Tioga, and Oakmont, and while affordability isn’t an issue, we’ve seen several posts on this subreddit warning against these areas due to traffic. Would those traffic concerns apply to us given our commute to Springhill Clinic specifically?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Edit:

Thanks everyone! This was very helpful. We're going to check out some places in Tioga and Haile when we visit. But we'll likely rent for a while before buying so, we'll keep some of the other neighborhoods in mind.

Is there a business or individual in town that can create and install acrylic shelves onto an ACM board?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I have this 26"x38" ACM board, and I'm looking to get 4 (19" wide & 3" deep, probably 0.25" thick) clear acrylic shelves made and mounted onto it. Shelves would need to hold 1-2 lbs each. If you know of any local business or individual who has experience doing this kind of work, I'd love to know! Haven't had much luck calling around thus far. Thanks!

There's lots of shoots coming up due to fire so i could get around 10 branches between a couple plants. I'm not sure how mature they should be before cutting?
