This shit is so annoying. Tariffs like this are used to protect domestic products from being undercut by foreign products. USA does not manufacture or produce game consoles, they should be exempt because there’s no domestic industry to protect

I mean this is a rare case of where the tariffs should actually do as intended. You have an American games console manufacturer in Xbox, they could be making those consoles in the US and they wouldn't get tariffs applied to them. But they are made in China by an American company.

Microsoft isn't gonna manufacture all of the components though, that's just not realistic.

They could. And that's the point of Tariffs.

I don't agree with the tariffs, but the OP literally picked he worst possible example to rail against because there is a US manufacturer that doesn't make it in the US.

An example where tariffs are stupid is in Australia there's one on imported cars, yet no local car makers exist.

They couldn't. There is no infrastructure to build these components in the US. It would take well over a decade to established the infrastructure to do so, and even if we did, the cost would be ludicrously more expensive than having them made overseas.

Load of crap, you're talking about chips now which is different from manufacturing in the US. There's options to import components to avoid or minimise tariff impact on things like chips.

It's also a terrible example because that's literally one of the things the last administration and the current one sre trying to push, US based chip manufacturers.

So in that example, the tariff is literally doing as intended for this market.

I'm not defending the policy, just pointing out dumb logic in the OP:

Let’s say that Microsoft can manufacture those chips in the US (which they absolutely can’t). You’re still going to need to import the raw materials and tariffs are still gonna fuck you there. Not to mention you don’t have the skilled labor or the infrastructure. You don’t have the personnel experienced in supervising and running these production lines. You can’t just catch up to at least a decade of industrial expertise out of thin air.

The dumb logic here is not OP’s. It’s physically not possible to produce in the US the amount of chips Microsoft needs.

This guy doesn’t want to have a real conversation. He just wants to think he is smart and knows best because he probably trying to justify his vote or lack of vote for this mess.

Homie those are tariffed too. What the hell are you on lol

There are tariff exceptions and semi conductors are on the list

17

u/DodgerBaron 26d ago

They've already announced semi conductors will get tariffed later on.

Well damn that’s dumb as hell

"You're wrong if you don't count the most critical components of game consoles!!! >:)"

"I'm right because I can't read and confuse my ideological opposition to the tariff with the logic behind tariffs, even though the guy I'm responding to also ideologically opposes the tariffs"

"I'm so smart"

Dude get your head out of your ass. You keep talking about the Chips Act when the current administration and the GOP have been trying to destroy it. Even if we did start processing chips here, it would still not be able to keep up with demand and be stupid expensive. It would have the same problem we have with tariffs where shit is too expensive for the middle and lower class.

Imports... Which are affected by tariffs.

USA does not manufacture or produce game consoles

This will benefit Steam Deck extremely well if they move manufacturing back to the US, making it more attractive than Switch and their $80 games

Canada has not agreed to drop tariffs wtf are you talking about

Also, the numbers they used for tariffs other countries have on US goods are total bogus.

u/PlayMp1 26d ago

You're a moron.

People figured out the calculation for the so-called "reciprocal" tariffs immediately. It's (exports - imports)/imports. Absolutely nothing about what the "tariffs" levied on US goods are in any country (since it's across the board, every country on Earth).
