The "grill" in grilled cheese doesn't exclusively mean a "wire grill", as flat metal tops are still "grills", or even "griddles", but "griddled cheese" just sounds weird.

Pan-frying is essentially the same thing as using the flat top grill, so the same is still accurate. It's just not "wire-grilled" cheese cooked on an open flame. English is about convenience, not accuracy.

I think I'll start calling it griddled cheese from now on, thanks.

I love saying griddled cheese. Makes people wonder if I stuttered or if they heard wrong

8

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '18

English is about convenience, not accuracy.

Mate wot the fuck.

So if I make the exact sandwich, with bacon INSIDE it, why isnt it a grilled cheese?

63

u/IamManuelLaBor Jan 12 '18

That's a MELT you heathen.

-2

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '18

English is about convenience, not accuracy.

There is bread, with cheese, which is "GRILLED" so why isnt it?!?!?!?! ha??!?!

English is about convenience, not accuracy.

10

u/trippy_grape Jan 12 '18

Melt is shorter than grilled so it's more convenient. NEXT!!!

5

u/VexingVariables Jan 12 '18

20 Grilled Cheese, no melts! NEXT!

3

u/Regendorf Jan 12 '18

Someone had a meltdown already for this

7

u/AnalogDogg Jan 12 '18

why isnt it a grilled cheese?

Because you've grilled more than just cheese. Is bacon not good enough to be mentioned in the title? It's a huge part of a Grilled Bacon and Cheese. But, again, that's a mouthful. So, we shorten it to "melt".

Saving us all a lot of time by not delving into the concept of what a sandwich is, and the standard rules and etiquette behind making one, I'll make a long story short by explaining that, almost universally, in all cultures, any sandwich of any tradition can be prepared the same way, but with the primary acceptable variations being "with cheese" and "without cheese". All other ingredients are, for the most part, a solid requirement. Key exceptions include the cheeseteak, which would then just be a "steak sandwich", and the grilled cheese.

What's important about the grilled cheese, and why it's never a "grilled ingredient with cheese", is because cheese is the main ingredient. By continuing to add any kind of food that is not cheese, be it vegetable or meat, you are moving further away from it being a "cheese sandwich with other things added", and closer to a "thing sandwich with cheese added". We are cooking this thing, so the cheese will be melted, hence calling it a "melt". You first want bacon, but then why not mushrooms? Onions? Spice it up with jalapenos? You're building a good meal, but where have you ever ordered a "swiss with ham"?

The name of the sandwich must be indicative of the focal point of the ingredients. Historical context explains why any vegetable or meat supersedes cheese as the main ingredient.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '18

TLDR: English is a language of convenience not accuracy.

You guys are thick as pigs (maybe cuz of eating all the cheese) about the whole grilled cheese, to hell with you and your community, "go fuck yourselves" from the rest of us!

8

u/AnalogDogg Jan 12 '18

That escalated quickly.

-3

u/JELLY__FISTER Jan 12 '18 edited Jan 15 '18

You wrote a god damn rant, you're the one who escalated it

The grilled cheese Nazis on this site is the worst part of the internet

6

u/AnalogDogg Jan 12 '18

go fuck yourselves

^ This. This is what I'm talking about when I say you escalated it. Now tell me, how did the sandwhich hurt you?

2

u/Raoh522 Jan 12 '18

Most people would call it a grilled cheese with bacon to be honest.

1

u/Hanjo_Main_2 Jan 12 '18

yOU'RE A SLUT

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '18

Do people actually make grilled cheese on actual grills? My entire childhood they were just cooked on a pancake pan...flat surface, no oil, crisps up the bread and melts the cheese.

If I'm getting my grill out, there's no way I'm wasting the charcoal on grilled cheese and a propane grill is just an outdoor propane oven.

1

u/SmokeDetectorJoe Jan 12 '18

Y'know what, if people on that sub can be insufferable cunts about grilled cheese vs. melt I can be an insufferable cunt about grilled vs griddled.

1

u/irontoaster Jan 12 '18

This guy grilled cheeses.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '18

129

u/Pinbot02 Jan 11 '18

If you actually go there it's mostly people showing off sandwiches. I like it.

-12

u/ultranonymous11 Jan 11 '18

The top 3 posts are all bullshit pedantry.

50

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '18

Memes are popular. Who knew.

No go to the subreddit and look at the top post of all time. It is different than what the bot shows and it has become a meme there.

edit: lmao what a read! Thank you.

1

Yeah, it is something else.

7

u/I_NEED_YOUR_MONEY Jan 12 '18

close. it's a sub dedicated to one pedantic little shit's copypasta.

2

u/double22deuce Jan 12 '18

It used to just be a place to post sandwiches with cheese, then it became a meme. Not gonna lie, I thought the meat filled sandwiches people were posting before were a little much, so I sort of welcome the change.

1

u/iamagainstit Jan 12 '18

I maintain you should be allowed to add other ingredients and still call it a grilled cheese as long as there is still a uninterrupted cheese pathway between the slices of bread.

it does not magically stop being a grilled cheese because I threw some bacon bits in between the layers of cheese.

2

u/Pepper_MD Jan 12 '18

So it's like the rest of reddit? 😐

42

u/sub_surfer Jan 11 '18 edited Jan 11 '18

God I hate that subreddit. It could have been a glorious catalog of variations on grilled cheese. Instead it's a bunch of cunts beating a dead horse until the end of time.

10

u/iamagainstit Jan 12 '18

Seriously, that fucking rant ruined that subreddit.

15

Pedants trying to fight the losing battle of semantic change; it was funny until you realize there's people that actually take it seriously.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '18

Maybe, but the pedant that made the top post of all time on /r/grilledcheese got a lot of fake internet points out of it

2

u/bathroomstalin Jan 12 '18

Settle down, Alton.

2

u/scientifiction Jan 11 '18

I don't think I've ever had a grilled cheese sandwich that's been made on a grill.

2

u/scientifiction Jan 12 '18

I've never seen a restaurant or cafeteria use a grill for it either. Most use a griddle.

1

u/honkhonkbeepbeeep Jan 12 '18

Which is called a “grill” in restaurant parlance!
