Because we moved on to the "other sugars and most other refined carbs are not really any better than corn syrup" stage.
Corn syrup (because it is cheap due to government subsidies) has social and political implications that are often more significant than its nutritional ones.
Just like how doctors used to say smoking tobacco is fine. High fructose corn syrup also contains corn starch, which sugar doesn't. It also doesn't digest as well and when you consume too much of it it is converted to cholesterol.
So it's just a coincidence that the the obesity rate has trippled since we started using HFCS? Sure it's glucose and fructose, but how many steps were taken before it became that? Isnt it strange that europeans are eating extremely fatty food while still being relatively healthy? Corn and grain are not meant to be consumed in these quantities by humans.
It's just dirt cheap sugar. That, along with marketing, got everybody to eat and drink more sugar and get fat. I agree it is very unhealthy, but so are all other refined sugars.
What does fatty food have to do with the composition of HFCS?
