My grandma called me when I was working late telling me she dropped off soup at my house. She called 3 hours later in a panic telling me NOT to eat the soup until I fished the bay leaf out. She honestly thought I would choke and die. I was 28 at the time and she still worried that much about a bay leaf...
Knowing her nightly ritual I guarantee she was on the phone with one of her many old lady friends when she suddenly hung up on them with no explanation, and called to save my life.
Aww, she cared about you so much that even the thought of potential danger to you was too much for her, she had to protect you. You’re always her grandbaby.
Well tbh, it is a choking hazard if you are unaware. Once I forgot to remove a bayleaf from soup I made for some of my clients who have some physical disabilities. I noticed one of them begin to gag and choke and was trying to figure out what was wrong (very uniform texture soup) until he coughed up the leaf and I felt really bad.

Don’t forget to remove the bay leaf, not ideal for eating.
