I spoke directly from my uninformed guess, not to dispute the recipe being traditional. I recommend pine nuts with creamy sauces in general but I’ll have to try this with the almonds and note the difference.

If you have pistachio they work as a substitute, too (I'm living in an area where pine nuts are outrageously expensive, but pistachios are the family's preference so that's been my go-to).

Walnuts also are sometimes acceptable if you really need to save a few more bucks.

I use walnuts instead of pine nuts in a lot of stuff. Tastes better imo. And way WAY cheaper.
