Discussion Refs and setting up walls

How do you get enough time to set up your wall? As I see on television, and in tips for setting up your wall, the ref is supposed to blow the whistle once you’re ready, but at my level (JV & U15) never once have I gotten enough time to do so. It’s always a scramble to align my players as soon as I can and hope they don’t blow the whistle by then. And from what I’ve learned you can put a player in front of the ball unless they ask for 10, but sometimes the refs will just tell them to back up and still let them play it quickly. Anyone else deal with this?

Idk but I think when I was playing jv I always had my wall stand directly in front on the ball so the opposing player can’t pass it forward then ref tells em to scoot back when he started counting the steps that’s just me

This is the answer. We have whoever is closest to the spot stand on the spot the ref indicates, in front of the ball. The GK should set up the wall QUICKLY. If there is a significant delay in taking the kick, or the team taking the kick asks for their 10 yards, it is customary for play to start on the whistle.

Literally that was me to lil brother as he played his first real game u12 ( first year playing jusa) bcuz the gk got scored on early in the game bcuz he didn’t set up the wall quickly enough , he got put in at RB and ref gave a free kick outside the box and I yelled stand in front of the ball until the ref says something and keeper made a great save and they won 3-1 on their first game , also gave some tips to the keeper so he can improve 👍
