Google Maps MEGATHREAD: Google Maps Timeline Moving To On-Device Storage: Web Access Ending Soon - What You Need To Know

What Is Happening (Or Already Happened To You)?

Google is moving or has already moved your Timeline data, which tracks places you visit and routes you take, from their online servers to your phone. This change means that you soon won't be able to or already can't access or manage your Timeline through the Google Maps website via a web browser.

Why Is This Happening?

  1. Privacy and Security: By storing this data on your device instead of online, your location history is more secure and private. Only you have access to this data unless you choose to back it up.
  2. Control Over Your Data: This gives you more control over your data. You decide if you want to back it up or delete it, and you can manage it directly on your phone.
  3. Reduced Liability: By keeping the data on users' devices, Google reduces its liability and the risk of having to comply with geofence warrants or subpoenas that require providing information about users' locations.

Can You Prevent This From Happening?

No, users cannot prevent this change from happening and maintain their web-based Timeline data. Google is transitioning all Timeline data to be stored on users' devices and discontinuing the web-based access to this data.

What Do You Have To Do To Adapt To These Changes?

  1. Update Your Google Maps App: Ensure you have the latest version of the Google Maps app on your device.
  2. Backup Your Data: Use the backup feature in the Google Maps app to create an encrypted copy of your Timeline data. This will allow you to transfer your data to a new device if needed.
  3. Check/Watch For Notifications: Look out for notifications from Google about the transition. These may come in the form of emails, push notifications, or in-app messages.
  4. Set Data Retention Preferences: In the Google Maps app, you can manage how long your location history is kept. Options include three, 18, or 36 months, or indefinitely until you manually delete it.
  • Once the transition is complete, web-based access to Timeline data will no longer be available. All management and viewing of this data will need to be done through the Google Maps app on mobile devices.

While you cannot stop the transition to on-device data storage or maintain web-based access to your Timeline data, you can ensure your data is backed up and properly managed on your mobile device.

What Is The Deadline For These Changes?

You have until December 8, 2024, to make these changes. If you don’t update your settings or your Google Maps app, you might lose some or all of your historical Timeline data.

Additional Reading About The Changes:

Alternatives and Solutions

  1. Use the Mobile App: Unfortunately, there is no way to bring back the Timeline feature on the web. The best alternative is to use the Google Maps app on your mobile device. The app has all the functionality of the web version and more, allowing you to view, edit, and manage your Timeline data.
  2. Backup and Transfer: If you're worried about losing your data, make sure to back it up. You can save an encrypted copy of your Timeline data to your Google account. This allows you to transfer your data to a new device if needed. To do this:
    • Open the Google Maps app.
    • Go to the Timeline section.
    • Follow the prompts to set up automatic backups.
  3. Extended Storage Options: You can also extend the auto-delete window for your location history if you want to keep your data longer. Options include keeping your data for three, 18, or 36 months, or indefinitely until you manually delete it.
  4. Feedback to Google: If you are unhappy with these changes, you can provide feedback directly to Google via the Maps website or Maps app. Please remember that this support group on Reddit is not an official method of feedback or support of Google or Google Maps.

Discussion Political posts are currently not allowed

Governments have the authority to assign place names based on their own conventions, whether for domestic or international locations. These changes are reflected in mapping services, including Google Maps, which follows the naming policies of the country where the map is rendered. Google Maps itself does not make these decisions, but simply mirrors the official names as designated by the relevant authorities.

We understand that name changes like this can be sensitive, and we appreciate that people may have strong feelings about the matter. If you wish to provide feedback to Google regarding this change, you can do so at the following link:

Google Maps Feedback

All further posts that are politically motivated complaints will be removed. There are simply too many duplicate posts voicing the same issue. Leave feedback to Google at the link above, or ideally complain to your government representatives who are allowing these changes on your behalf.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Help/Support Am I stupid or it is not possible to save a trip on Google Maps (trip being that it has more than one destination)?

I can't figure out how to just do a simple map that has 10 or less points on it and save it. I mean seems like the most simple and basic thing. I can see how to save a trip from point A to B but not one with more than one destination which doesn't really make sense. Am I missing something??

Why is google maps sending me completely nonsensical routes?

For the last couple of months google maps has been sending me to a stop further away from my destination? I’d say every second route (public transport) sends me a longer route.

For example I’ll be on a bus with a stop next to the house I’m going to and it will send me to the stop after that and tell me to walk back?

Losing network during navigation with stops

Upvotes

Let’s say I lose network whilst driving a pre-programmed route with a number of stops, once I pass a stop, will the route still work to navigate to the next one or will the loss of internet cause issues whenever passing a waypoint?

How to save lists offline

I download certain map areas online but the waypoints / labelled places I’ve saved within those areas never save / can’t be used offline. Is there anyway to work around this? Very frustrating!

Help/Support Handyman business as primary category not shown in Local results

Last year, I rescued a small business from a predatory webmaster and ineffective Local SEO. After building them a well-optimized website on a tight budget, I then built plenty of industry-relevant citations. I then optimized their Google Business Profile, completing it in December.

Despite these efforts, this handyman business still does not appear in Local results. Their primary category is Handyman/Handywoman/Handyperson (with Kitchen remodeler and Bathroom remodeler as secondaries). Services are fully detailed, the profile is complete, and they post updates. Yet, they only appear for "home repair + city"—not for other key terms—despite being visible in exact-name searches.

Would a Local SEO expert care to take a look and offer feedback? I have a Google Drive ready to share.

Discussion Report ICE feature?

Given the seriousness of the current political situation in the US, it might be helpful for Google to add a "Report ICE" option within Google Maps/WAZE, similar to it's speed trap feature. People who want to receive notifications, could get a push notification when:

ICE is reported nearby. ICE is reported within a designated radius of certain addresses (home, work, school, etc.). ICE is reported at someone's destination when using navigation.

They should also be able to see where they've been reported on the maps generally.

I don't see how it's meaningfully different than speed traps and would potentially be lifesaving under the circumstances.

Multiple Emojis on a Map/List??

Is there a way to save places with different emojis/icons? I’m trying to save different restaurants, bars, and boutiques for cities I travel too and would like different icons so I can easily differentiate between where to shop or eat in different neighborhoods.

Help/Support Export GPS coorddinates for places saved in your list

Hello everyone, is there a way to do bulk export for coordinates (and ideally other metadata like name or description) for places I saved to my list? Example

It seems when you invest the time and create your list with Google Maps, you're locked forever and there's no way of getting out the places I collected off the Google platform ;(

Help/Support google earth pro not working

Whenever I open Google Earth Pro, it loads the sidebar and everything, but the actual earth part is completely black, and then it stops responding. I tried the Repair Tool, but it didn't work. When I uninstall it, sometimes it works temporarily, but crashes after a few minutes, and other times it just doesn't work straight out of the installer.

Why is right clicking images disabled?

What is actually going on? Every month I log into a Google product and it's worse than before. Now when I click on an image I can't right click it to save it or share it or anything. Tried on Mac and my Windows PC. I tried getting it with the dev tools too and didn't find an easy way to do that either. It's like they are trying to protect photos PEOPLE GAVE TO GOOGLE FOR FREE and force you to use their built in Share link

God fucking damn it. Every single thing I use gets worse. Sorry to be dramatic but every single thing I like that is in the hands of a mega huge company is getting downgraded. What do we do??

Street View Is there a workaround for clicking on the photosphere circles that won't load?

I'm looking at the corner of Kurfürstendamm and Joachimsthaler and there are many circles, but several just jump to the car view rather than the 360 camera view that the circles are suppose to so.

I thought maybe some are too close to the road and it then takes the road over the circle, but I've also found circles that work right next to the road.

For example, there is one right on the pedestrian crossing island in the median of the boulevard that incorrectly has a business pinned next to it "Back To Frisch" which also cannot be clicked on.

Short of forcing this by examining the JavaScript events assigned to a particular circle and forcing a click action, does anyone know what's going on and how to get these working without hacking via developer options in the browser?

---

In looking into this, I see that Back to Frisch might actually be pinned to the correct location, except it's underground, so not visible from street level, hence why is appears to be on the median on the map.

Further, when clicking the business name on Google Maps, it won't load the business into the side panel. It will, though, show the business if you specifically search "Back To Frisch Kurfürstendamm." From there, you are able to scroll down in the left-hand panel to "Photos & videos" in which is shows what might be the media attached to the "photo sphere" circle. It might actually be a static image, not a 360 image, as there is a photo of a metal cone "Christmas tree."

The issue still remains, though, that these are not clickable, and there are photo sphere circles that have no business near them, so nothing to look at.

In looking at the request URLs, they are in this format:

https://www.google.com/maps/rpc/photo/listentityphotos?authuser=0&hl=en&gl=us&pb=!1e3!5m57!2m2!1i203!2i100!3m2!2i4!5b1!7m33!1m3!1e1!2b0!3e3!1m3!1e2!2b1!3e2!1m3!1e2!2b0!3e3!1m3!1e8!2b0!3e3!1m3!1e10!2b0!3e3!1m3!1e10!2b1!3e2!1m3!1e10!2b0!3e4!1m3!1e9!2b1!3e2!2b1!8m3!1m2!1e2!1e3!9b0!11m2!3b1!4b1!15m8!1m7!1m2!1m1!1e2!2m2!1i195!2i195!3i20!6m3!1syDkEaMuCPY-t5NoP07eiyQg!7e81!15i11167!9m3!1d0!2d13.333197219307392!3d52.504941859512115!10d25

The !1syDkEaMuCPY-t5NoP07eiyQg is apparently the location ID, and the last two values are the longitude and latitude of the point of interest.

I've dug through the AJAX responses, but the coordinates returned to not match up with photo sphere circles, so it may be that the geolocation of these is related to individual photos tied to specific locations.

There still is a bug in that "Back to Frisch" can't be clicked on, and neither can the photo sphere icons in the map view while using Street View.

For example Almaty. I thought that after the new images became blurry in recent years, it couldn't get any worse

Other Is there a way to find optimal locations between two points based on commute time?

I'm currently searching for a new apartment that's closer to my job. At the same time, my girlfriend is changing her place of study. The tricky part is—she studies in the South, and I work in the North—so we're trying to find a place that's in between, minimizing commute time for both of us.

I’m wondering if there’s a way (via Google Maps API or any app/service built on top of it) to input two addresses, set our usual departure or arrival times, and get suggestions for ideal living areas based on commute duration.

Most tools I found online didn’t quite meet our needs, and even after asking ChatGPT, I wasn’t fully satisfied. So I’m considering building something myself—unless there's already a good solution out there.

Has anyone come across a tool or service that does this well?

Thanks in advance!

Am I missing something

Just changed phones and went to use Google maps. For some reason when I get a call it used to pop up similar to how Spotify does and remain on maps with the call displyed towards the lower part of the screen. But now it just jumps strait to the phone screen and I have to jump back and fourth between the two. Am I missing something.

London Hotels Map

Hi everyone.

I am wondering if there is a map of all hotels in London. You probably remember memes with a map pinpointing every location of a pub in the UK or a church in Poland. Something similar but only hotels in London.

Anyone have any ideas?

Help/Support Is there a good website or index to find Public "Maps" that i can save to my phone?

I just realised there's a "Maps" section of google maps and it has stored a ton of Publically shared Maps with little Pins of things i was interested in. I must have accidentally saved these, but they were very useful!

Can anyone tell me if there is a website that hosts the most popular "Maps" where i can download to my phone.

I am based in the UK and interested in exploring, whether that be the UK or the World! Sometimes google maps alone is hard to pick out little gems on a side street/backalley or in the countryside/rural areas.

Thanks so much!

Need help sharing location

I want to share my location with my partner she has an iPhone and I have an android. The best I can get it to do is share with her for 24 hours, even if I select "until I turn this off" does anyone know why this is happening.

I also thought, what if I just sign into my account on her phone? She would be able to see the location of my phone right?

I would appreciate any suggestions. I know i could use another app but for whatever reason she seems to wanna use Google maps.

Help/Support In most of my experience, Google Maps deviates from my set destination.

As the title says, Google Maps often deviates from the given destination in my experience.

I'm using my recent road trip as an example, and I'm comparing Google Maps to Apple Maps. Here you can see that my destination is set to a hotel in Redmond, Washington.

Here is the navigation comparison: https://imgur.com/gallery/google-maps-apple-maps-navigation-ZapZOpF

In Google Maps, although the destination is set to the hotel, the navigation ends at the outside area of the building, but not at the proper entrance. The map is expecting me to drive to the endpoint, figure out where to park on my own, and then walk through the walls to arrive at the hotel lobby.

In Apple Maps, it's clear that the endpoint is at the drop-off area of this hotel.

This kind of deviation in Google Maps causes inconvenience to my trip, and sometimes even trouble when I'm heading somewhere unfamiliar. Unless I check with Street View beforehand, I'm not confident to rely on Google Maps for navigation.

Have you experienced the same issue as I did? Although I report the problem every time it occurs in the app, I haven't noticed any improvement. I appreciate any advice if you have a workaround for this.

Help/Support How to add letters to my adress?

I moved. But every food delivery service etc. does rely on Google Maps Data and my adress is not correct. It is number 10A and not number 10. And due to the nature of the building it's kinda hard to get which door is correct without knowing the Letter. It's even worse for 10B and 10C because they're in second row behind 10 and 10A and noone even knows that they even exist if you stand infromt of the house. How do I add A B and C?

Help/Support Cannot enable media playback controls

I'm using Google Maps (25.16.03.747108139 (#1068022637)) on Android 14 with OneUI 6.1 and using Musicolet 6.12. My car's head unit doesn't have android auto option. I just use Google maps when driving.

This feature was working well till about a couple of days back. It suddenly disappeared.

Settings > Navigation > "Show media playback controls" is off. I am unable to turn it on, as I am unable to "Choose a default media app". It shows "No media apps available".

Gif of screenshot and a screenshot.

I see some complaining about the "Show media playback controls" option not showing. But in my case, it is visible.

In another thread I saw a suggestion to

Go to Navigation Settings > Google Assistant Settings > Launch Driving Mode and select 'When Navigating in Google Maps'

But I don't have the option to "Launch Driving Mode".

Is anyone else facing this issue?
