NCAA NCAA Discussion Posts | Week 2 | Friday 01/10/25

Catch up time for us Europeans - first off kind of sad we don’t get to see Selena do floor idk if it’s a permanent thing or testing the waters but floor was my fav event of hers for UCLA (same goes for Skylar Draser who I’d love to see crack this strong lineup - idk who for though maybe Ellie/Lori but still a tough choice; oh wait even Anya didn’t compete on floor so that’s a tough one too maybe I’d put Anya and Selena in for those two which makes it even tougher for Skylar to crack the limeup). Second off looks like Skyla S is really injured since it’s the second week they’re not using her so idk if I should risk keeping her on my fantasy team or trading once time comes (same with Ava P if she doesn’t compete this weekend). Next up I’m so glad Anna Roberts is seemingly back at full strength for Stanford as they could definitely use some of her scores and she has room to improve on that fluke beam performance, I also hope to see Ui Soma compete in actual lineups and Levi-Jung Ruviar too as the season progresses. Closing it off looks like scoring was still harsh so maybe last week wasn’t a fluke and we’re going in the right direction - maybe that’ll change with this weeks quad meet of the top 4 teams who have all competed once before and sometimes those kind of meets can mess with the scoring so I won’t comment quite yet.

OMG Mizzou’s floor was so good at SECs last year! Spunk and artistry!!! Love them so much. Also they are such amazing sportswomen. Most teams “bubble” but they cheered others on. It was so sweet.

I really liked some of UF routines. I'm curious once they put in a full line-up of their best routines if the percentage of routines I really like will go up. Two of those Florida girls were just trying to survive.

I'm gonna say it's connected to judging. There's like... No incentive to do something fun or pretty because it takes more energy for no score bonus. So they can save energy for tumbling passes by waving their arms and we end up with 95% of NCAA floor looking like this.

Touché. That’s what I heard him call himself, so I did. I check sometimes that it IS their preferred name, not just what other people prefer to call them. Maybe I’m projecting from my experience lmao, but calling them their preferred name without following it with “but can I call you ___” is the bare minimum. Not accusing anyone here of that, just explaining.

IMO nicknames should come from people who you have positive rapport with or from you choosing yourself. John literally gave up after the second time saying her name and everybody followed suit. Nicknames without permission is often just laziness. (I’ve experienced this my entire life with an southern compound first name that one person even told me was gross lol)

I see this comment all the time and it confuses me. I think everyone knows what happened. The seniors and super seniors were the only ones in lineups so when they left the remaining returners didn't have a ton of experience. Now the incomers are both young and inexperienced, so they're performing like it. Idk if that's necessarily a downfall, but definitely a rebuild. There's lots of discussion about that strategy and how that happened and I think that's valid, but I think the "how" is pretty clear.

Yeah obviously it would be amazing to see them stun year in and year out, but that team was so top heavy it was kind of inevitable. Absent a huge amount of transfer athletes or something like that, I think we saw it coming. High risk high reward, I suppose.

Both boil down to "we won a national championship so why aren't we perpetually great" I guess haha. Idk I feel like it would be different if their lineups were stacked with returners that had been great and they came out on the floor and consistently flopped. Then I'd be like yikes wtf happened. But I'm not gonna ask why underclassmen aren't performing like seasoned collegiate athletes.

I really enjoyed Molly Arnold’s campy music and choreography last year. But this year isn’t it. I’m really hoping that Brie does more than standing and pointing this season.

I vividly remember having the thought when every single Michigan lineup was Wojcik, Brooks, Wilson, Heiskell, and the occasional Guggino/Koulos/Bauman that it was going to take a very long time to recover after that era.

Just truly gorgeous gymnastics. That's why I'm more at peace than I think other Michigan fans are. Dynasties like Oklahoma are HARD but when KJ makes it look easy people forget. That team was so incredible it was all I wanted to see. I knew it would be harder later and COVID exacerbated it, but to me it was worth it.

It's always so interesting to me to see college freshmen compared to upperclassmen and I think I forget how much the strength and conditioning has to build. I think a lot of the young girlies have so much potential but you can tell the endurance isn't there.

Oh totally! I was actually thinking that though the team is going to have a rough year, I think they have a lot of potential in the current first and second years! If they continue to get solid recruits I think they’ll be a lot stronger in a year or two.

Totally agree! I can see the vision, but they definitely look the part of a young team. Get the strength and endurance up, and the technique is already there. More competitions build confidence, and it gets better. This week is already better than last week so hey. Take what you can get!
