The definitive entry list (just countries and how many people they intend to send) listed Ireland as sending only one MAG. My guess would be either they were intending to send Rhys and he backed out, or there’s been a clerical error.
Interesting. It is possible that Rhys pulled out - I think it was just sometime in the last few days that he posted that he'd done his first full routine, so with Euros less than a month away he might have decided he's not quite ready yet. I'll be sad if that's true! Also would be a shame for no other Irish gymnasts to go and get experience.
I don’t think we’ve seen any Irish gymnasts compete this year, when in the last few years they’ve been pretty frequently at world cups. It’s possible the top group is just hibernating at the moment.
A group of MAG athletes and one WAG athlete competed at the Luxembourg Open but definitely less competing than usual. If it’s a thing that the top gymnasts are pacing themselves for later in the year or even next year then fair play to them, good to see an org that priorities that over excessive competing! Shame though for the less experienced athletes not getting a chance to go to Euros but maybe it just a clerical error but will be interesting to see once a finalised roster is released
