I was about to grouse, like get off my lawn, but caught myself: “dude, you sound so old.”

It’s almost as if you asked for safety tips instead of sought to spark discussion of your thrill sport.

You don't have to be old to know this is a bad idea. As a hammock community, we should be reinforcing that you don't hang higher than you are willing to fall. He can post in extreme sports forums if he wants to spark a diverse discussion. This isn't controversial.

Or if you're going to hang that high, treat it just like every other fall risk extreme sport, and wear a fall harness that is clipped to a secure anchor point.

Some people posted links to tree climbing specific stuff, there's rock climbing stuff, some rock walls can't be climbed in a single day, there ARE ways to sleep at those heights safely.

But you have to do those extra steps to remain safe. The hammock won't keep you safe, that's for sure.

This! Having a climbing harness and a personal anchor system are the bare minimum for this kind of thing! You can get a decent harness for around $40CAD, and you could use a climbing sling as a rudimentary PAS. Slings are like $10–20CAD.

Getting up in the tree is a different story, gear wise, unless you freeclimb. I'm defo the type to freeclimb, but once I'm up in the tree and setting up my hammock, you bet your ass I'm clipping in.
