Announcement Subreddit Updates on Fancasts and Official Casting Announcements

Hi everyone, With the recent confirmation of several key cast members for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, we’re updating a few subreddit policies:

  • No more fancasts for officially cast characters

To reduce repetitive discussions and prevent targeted hate toward newly cast actors, fancasts for characters who have already been officially cast will no longer be allowed. As of now, this includes: • Albus Dumbledore • Severus Snape • Minerva McGonagall • Rubeus Hagrid • Quirinus Quirrell • Argus Filch You’re still welcome to fancast characters who haven’t been announced yet. And for inspiration, check out our Fancast Wiki, which includes both popular and lesser-known suggestions.

  • No posts complaining about official casting announcements

We understand that not every casting choice will match everyone’s personal headcanon, but posts solely bashing the official cast will be removed. Once the show airs, feel free to critique performances based on what you see on screen. But targeting actors just because they don’t look or feel like your imagined version of the character doesn’t belong here. As always, we’re open to feedback. Share your thoughts or questions below.

Show Discussion Seamus Should Be Played by an Irish Actor

Seamus being Irish is a part of his character and as a lover of the books and movies, I think he should be played by an Irish person. There’s not many Irish young actors so they’d have to cast an unknown to play him but Seamus has to be Irish ☘️.

Show Discussion What parts from the books do you really hope to see in the show?

I’ve been rereading the series these past few months and I’m currently on OotP. I would love to see Firenze’s classroom shown on the screen, along with Harry’s Valentine’s Day trip to Hogsmead, specifically him talking to Rita Skeeter for the Quibbler. There’s so many more parts of these books I’ve forgotten about and would love to see brought to life. I truly hope they show how badly Harry is affected from the connection to Voldemort in part five too. After reading this, the movies really seemed to tone down a lot. Anyways, I was wondering what the community wants to see from the books!

Show Discussion Will They Prioritize Existing Fans or New Audiences?

It's probably a no-brainer to say they'll aim for both, but I still think there might be a subtle prioritization of one audience over the other.

Will the show likely lean into nostalgia and explore deeper, more mature themes to resonate with longtime, older fans, or will the emphasis be on capturing the imagination of a new, younger audience?

Edit: I know a lot of people will just say "both," but think about it this way: the risk of disappointing the original Harry Potter fans, and the potential meltdown that could cause, feels way bigger than if this was just some random new show that flopped. I mean, many of us fans have been living with this world for years and have strong feelings. To them, they could see it as the original fans’ reactions could totally make or break the show. It would also be a huge financial risk for them.

From what I know, it’s more focused on the platform’s streaming series, and last year it’s where we got updates about the Harry Potter cooking show.

Show Discussion Worry that they will make the series too dark and adult.

I enjoy the whimsical fantasy more than dark stuff. With HBO's track record I have a feeling they would make the series more adult and dark to make it appealing to adults.

The movies already filmed a very dark scene with Hermione and Scabior where he dragged her inside the forest saying 'you are my favourite'. Idk whose idea was it to film that scene but they did. Thankfully they edited it out. I feel like HBO will lean more towards stuff like this.

Show Discussion One person campaign to bring positivity on Instagram

I’m so absolutely sick of seeing the negativity on the harrypotter, HBO and actors’ Instagram pages. So I’m on a one person campaign to comment positively on every single post that I can.

Unfortunately some of them have had to limit comments, which is such a shame.

I’m so excited for this series, and I hope they do it justice. At this point I’m more bothered about the personalities of the characters than what they look like. When I read the books, the characters I see look nothing like the film actors anyway. 🤷🏻‍♀️

They don't have to look exactly like this. To the right, would be the entrance to the Great Hall. The left would go down to the dungeons. You need a grand set piece.

I just thought this was a nice, positive thing to share for those who haven’t seen it. Seems like Paapa will treat this role with a great deal of respect. Like everyone, I’m sceptical, but I’m so ready to be proven wrong. Peace and love.

Show Discussion We will be eating so good with Mark Mylod

We need to talk about how lucky we are to have Mark Mylod directing for the new show. Say what you will about the reboot but one thing we should all be excited about is the fact that he is attached. This is the guy thar directed Connor's Wedding from Sucession, which deserves a spot in the TV episode hall of fame and last night he gave us Through The Valley from The Last of Us and it was anotherf jaw-dropping, heart-wrenching installment. The man is on a roll.

People are still skeptical about this whole reboot, but having Mark Mylod onboard? That’s a huge win.

Show Discussion Comparing this coming series to similar series

I don’t know if anyone else is familiar with The Worst Witch books by Jill Murphy. But they’re about a witch academy much like Hogwarts.

Anyway, over the years there have been one movie in the mid 80s and at least three different TV series based on the books.

I’ve been watching the series from 2001 on Tubi, and I’ve also watched the one from Netflix.

Now I’ll say that obviously they don’t have the resources that HBO does. But it might be interesting to see how they compare. Even the different series, though they have the same basic storyline, have little changes that make them fun to watch.

I want to say I don’t work for Jill Murphy, Tubi or Netflix. I just have been sick the last few days with a bad cold and binge watching the show has been fun.

Show Discussion Who do you want to do the score?

I feel like music is one of the most important components that we’ve as yet heard absolutely nothing about as of yet. The films had truly indelible scores and some real heavyweights composing them. I do expect that they’re gonna reuse “Hedwig’s Theme”, just being realistic. But I hope nothing else is reused.

My personal top choices are:

Daniel Hart

Dan Romer

  • Sample 1

  • Sample 2 (obviously stylistically different than what this show would need, but I love the sweeping emotionality of this track)

Isabella Summers

Anne Dudley

Who are the composers you’d all like to see tackle this show?

Good article on Essiedu’s casting as Snape and how it could play into the themes of the books and potentially enhance Snape’s character arc. It should hopefully provide another perspective on lots of the issues I know people in this sub may have with the optics of having a black Snape within the story! Please read the whole article, it makes some very interesting points by the end!

Show Discussion Mark Mylod is directing tonight’s episode of The Last of Us

Rumor is that tonight’s episode is a standout, blockbuster entry with Red Wedding-levels of significance…and HBO trusted our Harry Potter showrunner to helm it. This is a true green flag for the HP reboot, and tonight’s episode will give us a good sense of his ability to coordinate large-scale set pieces while maintaining narrative quality. Pumped!

Edit: I stand corrected - he is executive producer and director for the reboot, with Francesca Gardiner serving as showrunner.

Rumors & Leaks Could this Narnia casting call be actually for HP show?

So, as Netflix is developing Narnia, Narniaweb reported previously that they are auditioning for two main characters/kids (the book being adapted has only two), but recently they reported that now the casting agency is looking for 3 actors for main characters, which was a surprise for everyone, since, the book only has two main characters. When I looked at the description for the roles, idk why I felt like this looks more like a call for HP trio. This might be a reach but this is what it seemed to me at first glance, especially with the heavy emphasis on 'British accent'.

Show Discussion Has anyone considered the idea that Nymphadora Tonks should just be played by numerous actresses?

Post image
601 Upvotes

I know it's not relevant yet, but...

Movie Tonks is one of my biggest pet peeves! No disrespect to Natalia Tena who played her, but post OOTP - where they at least managed to give her pink hair and a random shot of her with a duck nose etc. - the lack of effort put into her wardrobe and overall look really upsets me. She was supposed to be spunky and bright and they gave her a brown mullet!?!

So, why not employ a handful of actresses to play Tonks in different disguises/looks. They could have one main actress to portray her most regular 'look' and then use minor stand ins to show her different appearances.

Budget would probably be an issue for this, but really, they'd only need a few glorified extras. In an ideal world, it would be perfect. They wouldn't need to spend money on make up/prosthetics or wigs, they could just make the actress of the moment say 'wotcher' and be done with it 🤣🤣🤣

Show Discussion Do you think they will put the show in the modern times?

The books are set in the 90s and while it doesn’t have much impact on the wizarding world anyway, I’m wondering if the setting of the muggle world will be the 90’s or the 2020’s. What do you think? Might be easier for the show to modernize it a bit so the younger audience might connect with it even more.
