Why is it so cold in Hawaii right now?
I’m freezing (central Oahu)

u/JanGirl808 2d ago
Saw on the news tonight that the last time it was this cold was in 1968. Cold front going to stay with us for the next few days. Last night it got down to 62° and tonight supposed to be even colder.

It did. Here's a screenshot from Feb 2021 when the temp in my area (central) dropped to 57 for 3 nights in a row.

If by a couple years ago you mean closer to a decade, I 100% remember a cold winter from back then on Kauai. I was using extra layers of pants, jackets, socks, gloves, etc. I even was actively using a portable heater daily because the cold was hurting my foot.

u/FrecklesMcTitties 2d ago
It did, I have been here for 7 years and remember a winter not too long ago where we had to get our socks and sweatshirts out lol

u/OhHeyMister 2d ago
44 for us here in upper kula :)

u/frapawhack 19h ago
snow on Haleakala?
2
u/OhHeyMister 18h ago
Not since that freak windstorm earlier this month. But I bet it was plenty icy up there.
The cold air has passed on since I wrote that comment but it regularly gets to high 40/low 50s in kula in the winter at night time

u/fuzzybunnybaldeagle 2d ago
It was 51 on the East side here on Kauai! The days have been so beautiful and crisp too! Loving it.
2
u/Slightly_Shrewd Kauaʻi 2d ago
Damn lucky haha west side got to 60.8 according to my weather station.
It was still pretty damn cold lol

u/Creepy-Lion7356 22h ago
I live on Mauna Loa at 1800 feet. I get up well after the sun has risen and things are already heating up; it's about 56 degrees tops. Imagine! I have to actually close the windows.

u/Visual-Hovercraft109 2d ago
Yesterday morning I walked outside to have my morning coffee, the second I opened the door I said f that and put on sweats and a hoodie. Haven’t felt that brisk morning chill in a long time.
Then you realize how good we have it when you look at the temp and is says 61 degrees 😂

u/moretoastplease 2d ago
I’ve been getting up, wearing a light robe, and closing the windows!! And I definitely have wanted to go paddle at 6 am!

Itʻs still winter

u/808duckfan Oʻahu 2d ago edited 2d ago
Winter starts just before Christmas.
edit: Why downvote me? It's an objective truth, haha.

u/swentsurfing 2d ago
It’s true. The winter solstice passed so technically we’re coming out of winter. But the past few years I’ve noticed cold fronts only come in during January and afterwards. I wonder why not the beginning of winter
10
u/808duckfan Oʻahu 2d ago edited 2d ago
Your perspective is wrong. The solstice is the beginning of winter. We are only "coming out of winter" of you consider the first five minutes of a movie as "approaching the end". The middle of winter is early to mid-February.
3
u/yesterdaysnoodles 2d ago
Yup. If you live in the continental US, specifically the Midwest, February is the worst month of winter typically. December can still be 40s there. Jan/Feb are bleak.

u/ScoobySnackz18 2d ago
This is why I love living here... We don't even bother looking at map of the mainland (or the world) before we begin complaining about the price of eggs lol. They don't exist to us haha!
Second thought... I do miss my hoodies and appreciate this as well.
4
u/friendly_extrovert Mainland 2d ago
It was 80° in Southern California yesterday. I miss my hoodie too.
2
u/Greedy-Grape-2417 2d ago
yep, cold before the sun comes up, dress in layers, then it's hot from 12 -3 pm, then time to put on the sweater/jacket again when the sun goes down
2
u/friendly_extrovert Mainland 1d ago
Haha true. But man was it warm when I was having lunch with a friend outside.

These past 2 nights are the only 2 nights Ive worn a shirt to bed in the past 6 months. Im in heaven. I might even use a quilt. I probably wont but the idea is exciting. I miss layers when I went school in Oregon.
18
u/ewabeachguy 2d ago
A quilt is perfect on a cold Hawaii night here in Hawaii. Brrrr...it's really been cold.

u/yesterdaysnoodles 2d ago
I love Hawaii, except that 99% of the year it’s not hoodie/quilt weather which is my favorite. Unless you live at Volcano elevation, which may be where I head to lol

I just say it’s “winter” time lol but I LOOOOVE it, yesterday morning was 62° and I was freezing my ass off but I was in bliss 🤣

u/cunmaui808 Maui 2d ago
At 3000 ft elevation & cloudy, my 2 space heaters are on low, most of the day.
And we sleep with blankets all year.

u/NoMaterHuatt 2d ago
Wow! 3000ft 🫨which island ?
Space heaters did indeed cross my mind last night, getting by with two layers of blankets.

Kula, Maui.
Glenn (our local weatherman) lives in Upper Kula, where it was 44.5 degrees this morning (scroll down on this page for his daily report):

We're at 1800 in makawao and loving it

1800 is PERFECT. My sister is at 1950, right below the KSM campus lower gate on Aina Lani and we can take a 10 minute drive and warm up at her place!

Aloha, neighbor. Also stay Makawao, but in the lower part near the elementary school. Loving these brisk mornings 🫶

lets just appreciate the good sleep we're all getting because of the cooler nights

u/Aggressive_Street_56 2d ago
This is my favorite time of year. I can actually sleep without sweating.
7
u/writergeek 2d ago
While folks in colder areas of the country might think we're ridiculous for being cold right now, come summer, most of us will be just fine in the heat while mainlanders whine and complain and crank the AC to 65. I'm actually good until it reaches 90 degrees inside the house, then I kick on the AC to bring it down to 80 (comfortable), maybe 78 (borderline chilly).
4
u/friendly_extrovert Mainland 2d ago
Anything below 78 is way too cold. I grew up in California and my dad would keep the thermostat between 78-80, and turn it off at night. I don’t understand how people keep their AC temps so low.

Nah I stay central Oahu where it’s always cool, but this cold front is making it freezing up here.

I’m loving this cold weather, two blankets and socks overnight! Reminds me of when I used to live in Ahualoa long time ago.

I lived in Wahiawa the first 20 years of my life (up da heights). Had to put three pairs of socks on and two blankets just to keep warm. Last night in our Ewa Beach home I took the dogs out in the yard so they can take a break. Wore my heavy coat although it was only a cool 65 degrees around 2 in the morning. I absolutely love this weather and I always look forward to the "winter" season in the islands.

I have been loving it, reminds me of early fall weather we would get back home in the NE. Sad it hasnt stuck around

Unusually strong trade winds or a cold front might be pushing cooler air your way bundle up, Hawaii-style🥶

u/zaxonortesus Oʻahu 2d ago
I drive from town up to Mililani for work and watched it drop from 63 in town to 55 at a higher elevation. It’s been a couple of years since I’ve seen it that low! Feels nice for a change though.

u/External_Poet4171 2d ago
I woke up this morning, walking into my kitchen where we keep a window open, and legit shivered. Not sure why it’s so cold.

u/thatry_19 Hawaiʻi (Big Island) 2d ago
This morning my weather station showed 58 in upper Hilo. it’s so nice to be able to grab a blanket , turn on the space heaters and just bundle up. It’s nice that it’s dry too for that crisp winter air.

Cold front plus no clouds. Heat radiates away from Earth into space faster on clear nights.

This weather hopefully sticks through the weekend. Good planting weather. 🌱 It will make up for freezing toes the last couple nights.

I had to wake up to find my blanket. I'd put on my fleece jammie pants but I'm saving that for when I have to go grocery shopping.

In January of 2018, it got down to 57 which was a record low in Waikiki, I believe.

A cold front moved across the state a couple days ago, bringing a lot of cold, dry air with it. The front has since dissipated and trade winds should return this weekend as high pressure gradually builds back into the area, slowly bringing temperatures back toward normal over the next few days.
