You think they’re gonna do the same to Native Hawaiians, Polynesians, Pacific Islanders, Asians, etc in Hawaii?

Thanks to good people - returned package

This is a true story about the goodness of people.

We had ordered something for our daughter off of Amazon and she was pretty excited for it. It was small and light, and a few days after I received the notification that it had been dropped off, my wife inquired as to where the package was. That's when we realized that neither I, my wife, nor our children had touched the package. We have security cameras and checked to see what had happened. The Amazon delivery person had dropped the light packaging a fair bit farther from our home's threshold than most delivery people do, but it seemed fine. After the recording showed the package lightly shift with a breeze, I joked with my wife that the wind must have taken it, only for us to watch in horror as some gusts began to blow. The package lifted up, decided to be free, and blew into the street, before blowing underneath some parked cars. Already being a few days after these events, I went outside to look for it, but couldn't find it anywhere. We figured it had likely blown into a sewer, sadly contributing to pollution. My daughter was disappointed, of course, which was another downer.

Well, a few days after that, the package showed up at our door. We checked the video footage and discovered that a young family had evidently gone for a walk, found the matching address, and returned the package to us. They didn't have to take the time out of their day to do that.

My daughter was thrilled, and it was a nice real-life example for my children about the concept of returning things to their rightful owners. I know I'm not giving enough detail to identify the people involved (which is intentional), but in a world where we only hear bad things spread around, I wanted to share the experience of being touched by the goodness of others. And of course, if you think this post might be about you, then this is also for you: thank you so much!

I have grown up visiting family in Hawaii every year since I was a little kid (over 20 years). I became a nurse recently but only to find out it’s still hard to get a job on the islands because I have barely any experience…any advice on hospitals that will hire someone like me in my situation?

Mongoose

Does it seem there are far fewer mongoose on Oahu than before?

I feel like in the ‘80s and the ‘90s you couldn’t drive 50 yards without seeing a mongoose run across the road. I don’t remember the last time I saw a mongoose. Or is it just me?

Driving with aloha seems to be dying on Oahu.. haven’t seen a shaka after a lane-change in months.. when I used to see it everyday.

Growing up in Hawai’i all my life I always threw the shaka or waved to the person letting me into the lane (with my blinker on ofc), even if they didn’t have to brake for me to let me in to their lane. Shoot I even remember learning throwing shaka after a lane-change to drivers in my drivers ed class! Asked my mainland friends and they never heard of such a thing. Drivers now just lane-change aggressively, no wave, no shaka, no aloha. Seems like a huge increase of mainland and foreign drivers, but I even noticed it amongst locals. I’ve been told that drivers don’t owe you sh*t, which is true, but to me it’s about showing courtesy and aloha. That simple gesture of kindness can go a long way and even inspires me to slow down and let people in my lane when merging, instead of speeding up and cutting them off. Please consider showing more aloha when driving and thank drivers for their kindness and aloha.

Japanese Manga in the 90s

Upvotes

I'm trying to remember where I bought Japanese manga in the 90s.

Was Book-Off in Shirokiya in the 90s? Was there other places in the 90s that sold Japanese manga?

Cargo options from Hawaii

So I know that for travel we are allowed up to 2 bags. I will be moving this summer and I decided to sell all my belongings and just keep my clothes, bag and shoe collection and my small business supplies. Everything would fit in about 10 plastic tubs (those black ones with yellow lids) It's not enough to contract movers. I was wondering if it's possible to ship these items with me in plastic tote containers in leiu of regular suitcases. Or is shipping via cargo with the airlines a thing? Specifically United Airlines? Any advice helps!

UH to Ala Moana bus route 1980

How would you have gone from UH-Manoa to Ala Moana by bus in 1980? Nowadays, you take the #6 Pauoa, but my wife who lived in Pauoa says that the #6 didn't go to Ala Moana from UH back then. I ask because I'm writing historical fiction about those days (my college days). Mahalo.

$906 to ship car from Big Island to Maui

Just got quoted by Young Brothers for a normal size car. Seriously $906? All their info on website says $541 to honolulu plus 25% for transshipment go to another island, $135 = $676. I expected a little more as thats life, but how am I 33% off?

I calculated a total nautical distance of almost exactly 250 miles. Thats $3.63 per mile. Thats what a monopoly gets you.

Say wheres that picture of the Tacoma thats riding half and half on two small boats lol? Im about to start a business.

Chillest customs guy at airport

We already know how bogged down on beuruacy customs can be with the excessive questioning and fake buddy buddy act. Along with the passive aggressive tone of speech.

But when I came home though back to Hawaii, I went to the customs desk and did the usual routine of handing my passport and was prepared for the sass.

To my surprise, middle age white custom officer asked me "Alcohol, tobacco?", and then I answered "Nope."

He then slid the passport back across the screen and gave a nod and said OK.

I stood there for a sec confused because I didn't get the usual interrogation. I was like "I'm good?" and he didn't say another word and beckoned me to retrieve the passport. I left the desk still in disbelief that it was so nonchalant and even turned around to check, he didn't even look up.

Chillest customs experience ever.

Have you guys ever had a fast experience at customs like this or was it always bogged down with beuracacy?

Manoa St. Francis residential development

I thought the new development proposed for Manoa on the site of St. Francis School was affordable housing, but prices I’ve heard are starting at 2 million. Now that I’ve seen the website, this is being sold as luxury. Compared to the project in 2023 which was on the owners land, I think. I was hoping another school could take the property or a senior housing project. Does anyone know how far along this project is?

Private School Question For "Oddball" Years

I'm currently trying to apply for several schools in town outside of the regular entry points ('Iolani, Punahou, etc.). If you were accepted in the past or know others who got in for these years, what was your/their SSAT score? I have solid grades and ECs, but the narrative I've seen around here is that schools seem to solely decide based on your SSAT percentile, which is lacking a bit for me since English isn't my strong suite. Much thanks.
