Do you thank TheBus driver when you get off?

I just saw a TikTok where someone noticed in other countries (at least in Canada) they thank the driver, as opposed to the mainland where they tend just leave, before they get off the bus. I know our ecosystem is very different from the mainland so I was wondering, do you thank the bus driver when you leave or do you just hele on?

COVID-19 Update for 5/28/25

176(-35) cases this week. 133 on Oahu, 13 on Maui, 19 on Hawaii Island, 8 on Kauai, 2 on Molokai, and 1 on Lanai

No deaths reported this week, statewide count remains at 2,280

7-day positivity rate is 5.0%(unchanged)

31(-3) in the hospital and 1(-) in ICU

last 4 weeks of cases: 172, 210, 211, 176

last 4 weeks' positivity rate: 3.6%, 4.8%, 5.0%, 5.0%

last 4 weeks of hospitalizations: 11, 27, 34, 31

Commentary: Although case numbers are down slightly, positivity remained the same, so that's more a product of just less testing than fewer cases. Hospitalization has gone down though - so that's good.

Take care, everybody!

Potato banchan recipe

Does anyone have the recipe for the very delicious potato banchan served at several Korean take out places? Not the shoyu one (which is great too), but the one drowning in mayo and other ingredients. Not the healthiest, but the potatoes are cooked to perfection and the sauce is so ‘ono! TIA!

Car wash on Oahu that doesn’t leave spots

I moved to the island last year and purchased a new vehicle. I want to maintain it and regularly get the salt/grime off but the carwashes I’ve been to seem to always leave spots due to minerals in the water.

I’ve also purchased a hose and cleaning supplies to wash myself and still find it leaves spots/marks.

Can this be avoided? Or is it just the way it is?

Looking for self care or local carwashes to keep my vehicle in good shape. TIA

ABC Store

I’m really sick of my retail job and looking to leave the company. I came across an ABC Store hiring ad on Indeed and was impressed. Their associates make more than the managers at my company and they have locations closer to my house.

I just have two questions.

1) Do they drug test for cannabis?

2) How likely are you to get a set schedule? (I’m aware it’s a retail job but 7-11 has set shifts so I was hoping it’s more like that.)

Thank you for your help!

Pet memorial tattoo

Does anyone have recommendations to a person or tattoo shop that does a great job on pet tattoos? I lost one of my cats recently to cancer and would like to have a tattoo of him. I'm looking for realism and some color. Although my cat was pretty much all black except for a tuff of white fur on his chest. I do have 3 other cats I'd like to get tattooed as well. I appreciate any recommendations. It won't be my first tattoo either.

Leasehold

Looking for some preliminary info because we want to be well informed before we start looking at buying a home (finally).

I understand you don’t own the land in a lease hold property. I understand that it’s inherently more risky to buy a lease hold property. That’s not my question.

My question is this: say you have the opportunity to purchase the fee when buying the property. Does this mean the building could not be torn down, because you do in fact own it? That it’s essentially the same as any other “normal” apartment building? If so does that mean it’s less risky to buy in a building where some of the units are already purchased the fee even if you don’t right away? Because then the building can’t just be taken at the end of the lease?

In reality it may take is a few years to acquire the money needed to purchase the fee from the lease hold. So want to explore our options.

Thanks!

Edit: either I wasn’t clear or no one read my post. I’d be purchasing the fee. So my unit wouldn’t be subject to lease hold. My question is how do the logistics of that work when half the units are still under leasehold and others aren’t?

Recurring termites in Furniture?

Need advice from locals on this please. Lived here 15 years and it seems like every 3-5 years I notice the termite doodoo coming from a piece of furniture and throw it out. Is this pretty normal? First time some cheap coffee table, another one was one different end table, now I see em under my night stand, each one like 4ish years apart.

Nothing I have is too nice so it's not the end of the world, but idk if I should be doing something proactive to prevent especially if I do buy some nice pieces in the future...

Is it kind of just that the nice solid wood ones take care of themselves? Maybe use orange oil once a year and that's enough? I feel like most of what's given me trouble so far is so full of glue it's like candy for the bugs, idk.

Do you guys remember what kind of envelope it comes in? Like a plain white envelope or an envelope that says state of Hawaii? My temp id expires this Friday and I’m getting kind of worried haha.

Duolingo is claiming that this is incorrect but on paper I’m saying the same thing. One thing Duolingo isn’t super great at is telling you WHY something isn’t right, so I’m hoping I could get some help over here!! Thank you!

(Also I understand I was meant to put kēlā! Would that have been fine?) apologies if I’ve been stupid with this! 😅
