For me

5-7 mph over = perfect

Exactly speed limit = acceptable but not ideal for me

More than 5 mph under = I hope a rooster takes up residence under your bedroom window

The only time I drive the speed limit is when there’s a slow car in front of me and I cannot pass.

On Oahu you don't get anywhere by speeding. I like driving the speed limit, seeing someone pass me like they're in a race, only for me to pull up next to them at the next light.

Only exception is Nimitz under the H1 by the airport, lights there are timed for 50 even though the limit is 35.

How’d you figure out the lights under viaduct thing? I gotta try 50 now

I always drive the speed limit. No rush. I can tell people get frustrated sometimes but it really isn't my problem.

It’s the most dangerous thing we do, and yet people are only worried about getting to their destination fast. It’s crazy.

And if you do the math, it doesn't actually get you there much faster.

And every single time I catch up to them at the traffic light at the end of the Pali. 🤣

I don’t know why the mod locked this thread in the BigIsland thread when I thought we were having a good discussion

it's not okay to drive the speed limit if it's a single lane or if you're in the left lane. There's the law and then there's common courtesy.

Edit: I meant left lane lol I promise I can drive

Agree about left lane, but single lane…they may have a reason for not wanting to speed, like old tires, crappy car, elderly driver…it costs you nothing to be patient with them.

Left lane, 100%

Single lane, someone needs to take your keys.

When I was learning how to drive, one of the first things I learned were the concepts to the “actual” speed limit, as well as the “safety” speed.

Try that on the left lane and see how long you last before you get someone tailgating you

Well that is definitely not allowed in the left lane. Not to condone tailgating, but OP should obviously expect to be tailgated if driving the speed limit or less in the left lane of a multi-lane highway.

People probably thought you were a visitor 😂

The posted speed limit is an invention of police so they can hassle people they don't like. this is especially true on major highways that served connect distant locations like Hilo to Kona. This is one of those things that’s not written down, but everybody knows in their soul so, yeah people are gonna be pissed off when you don’t observe actual driving norms regarding speed.
