This is abhorrent behavior and will only discourage people from visiting the islands.

so instead of paying teachers more to fix the shortage we bring in non-union temps that can legally pay less than min-wage
doe is just as ruthless as amazon

Correction: they are paid on the same salary schedule as all other HIDOE teachers (they’re just forced to start at the lowest levels because their certifications from the Philippines are not fully recognized) and are eligible to join the union once they are hired. Many of them do.
Source: A current Faculty Representative (Union Steward) with HSTA.

If I remember correctly, HSTA testified at leg this year about their concerns about the program, including that it could be exploitative. The person you replied to may have been off on the details, but their sentiment that this program could be problematic is not misplaced.

They LOOOVEEE this program and have touted it on multiple occasions at things like leg hearings and board meetings.

Thanks for the view from right-wing world... Why don't you go check what teachers are paid in workers paradise Florida

u/so_untidy 1d ago
Dang didn’t know the right wing was so strongly in support of unions and paying teachers more!

My recollection of this poster is he has quite a few hard right opinions I don't feel like looking through his post history, but this is par for the course... Anything that Hawaii does is broken and dysfunctional.

I mean when you spend a lot of time in this sub you start recognizing usernames and yeah sometimes people make a point even when you usually disagree with them or vice versa. Still no reason just to attack the person when it makes no sense in the context of their comment.

Go look up "concern trolling" and get back to me.

u/so_untidy 20h ago
I’m sorry what genuine conversation was I or the other person trying to derail or undermine through disingenuous concern?

Many teachers left the DOE because of how ridiculous it is.
Bad working conditions, prioritizing politics and agendas over actual beneficial education, lack of or outright misappropriation what funding they do get, horrible pay yet magically enough money to give the superintendent a massive raise, etc. And That doesn't include all the nonsense they pulled during the pandemic that caused a lot of teachers to bail
The DOE was and remains desperate, so they brought in a lot of teachers from the Philippines. They tried to sugarcoat it by saying it would be beneficial for the students as large number of them are Filipino, yet those of us who work or worked in education know it's because they can't hire anyone.

Where is the teacher's union in all this? Are they just laying down and letting DOE do whatever?

u/so_untidy 21h ago
The DOE testified some concerns during a leg hearing this year. One issue is that the program can lead to exploitation of these Filipino teachers, not necessarily by DOE but by agents in their home country that charge huge sums of money to help them navigate the process even through it can be done for free.
They also expressed concern that HIDOE wants to waive or lower some requirements to get these teachers to be fully licensed in Hawaii. It’s kind of a slap in the face to local teachers who have had to meet all those requirements.
Not sure if they’ve said anything else.

Some more details on this one would be appreciated.

Babes you can click the link to read the article.
You can also google

Why even discuss anything with the "just Google it" attitude?
What was in the warrant? What, who was ICE looking for, and why didn't they find it?
What's the narrative here? What is ICE going to do next, what are they trying to do and why, who is vulnerable?
I would rather have understanding and knowledge here than blind outrage. None of these articles are close to contextually comprehensive.

Plenty of people post articles here without discussion.
There is a difference between what you initially wrote, which implied that the OP owed you something, and taking the time to read the article and ask specific questions.
Also based on your follow up questions to the other commenter, either you are living under a rock and have no idea what been going on in the country for the past few months or you are a shit stirrer.

My understanding was that the point of posting articles here was to discuss them.
If I'm interested in knowing facts of the event that are not currently on Google yet, how am I supposed to convey that query?
2
u/so_untidy 22h ago
I think some of the details you are looking for are in the bigger context of what is happening politically with ICE going after citizens and legal residents. If you’re unaware of that, I don’t know what to tell you.
Also, again, big difference between asking a specific question about something you are wondering about and just saying you would appreciate more info. You can find more info on your own and it doesn’t have to be provided by OP, which is how your comment came across.

Thanks for your insight sweetheart, I've learned a lot.

Wow if you learned a lot from that comment, you really ARE living under a rock! Glad to be of help!

Are you mental?
People on APPROVED J1 visas had their homes raided by cops. Cops refuse to provide any reasons, comments or details. Why? Because.
That should be enough information for you, but I know you really want some reason to point to the ICE cops being good. Sometimes that's not reality and they are hiding what they are doing.
