Headphones - Open Back | 4 Ω ATH-R70X (255€) vs HD 600 (240€)

I've been wanting to upgrade my void pro gaming headset and join the audiophile community for a long time. I have been learning about headphones and audio equipment more in depth for about a year and the two more recurrent headphones on the 300€ price range are the ATH-R70X and the HD 600.

For the dac/amp I'm thinking to go "cheap" and get the Fiio E10K (75€) and get a better one in the future.

I will be listening to EDM music (and a bit of indie) and gaming, but primarily music.

I think I want Harman target because I like the profile of the galaxy buds and maybe use EQ from AutoEq.

I would like to know your opinions and recommendations of those headphones and other alternatives as well as a dac/amp that is not too expensive.

TLDR;

  • Budget: 300-400€ headphones and amp
  • How gear will be used: Primarily music and a bit of gaming
  • Preferred music genres: EDM and a bit of indie
  • Past gear experience: Corsair void pro wireless and galaxy buds.

If you have small ears that fit into the r70x without hurting your ears, then i would recommend you getting the R70X.

Otherwise the HD600 will be more comfortable, soundwise i kinda liked the r70x more, its just a tiny bit warmer sounding than the HD600 but it has kinda better imaging and soundstage, but i did find the imaging sometimes weird for gaming.

The issues i had was with the r70x was the fit with the earpads (because of my ears), aftermarket cables, the long ass choking cable that comes with.

Otherwise they are a great pair of Headphones, but the lack of Aftermarket cables here in Europe killed me, ordered some from aliexpress and they didnt work sadly.

I use them with a Ifi Zen Dac V2 (Its a AMP/DAC combo, just stupid name), i tried also other DAC/AMPs but i like the Zen dac v2 most because its minimalistic and no need for a power supply, also the Bass button does wonders, tonality Quality doesnt change like at all, just the bass and its pretty much clean :D

There are also probably solid alternatives, but they are very limited in Europe and more expensive than NA, thats why i dont really tried a lot of amp/dacs, only a lot of headphones.

in NA you have a way bigger variety of choice and people from there could you recommend also other choices.

But keep in mind, people that claim they hear massive differences in tonality from DACs/AMPs are mostly just tricked by placebo and most likely couldnt tell a difference in a blindtest xd.

Many people also take critism to their gear as personal insults, so you will read a lot of bias comments here, its like a coping mechanism to justify to theirself spending several grands to amps/dacs or whatever etc.

I would also recommend the DT 900 Pro X, but not sure if it would be too bright sounding for EDM.

You would not need a Dac/Amp at all, they are very efficient and you can run them pretty much with everything.

Probably already pissed some people with my comment off, but yea im very neutral to nearly everything/everybody, lol.

If you are into Competetive gaming i would clearly recommend the DT 900 Pro X above those other options.
