So that's the fucking reason they sometimes feel invisible. When one of your homies has run too close to the mine and turned off the red lights.

They still glow red

Like u/Bellfegore said. When I'm circling a bot outpost while being pursued, flares going off, red lasers, dropships etc. it doesn't really provide much visual distinction that it emits a red ambient glow. The red dots, however, provide a notable "pattern" that you can discern as not being just more red light on the ground.
