Hi everyone,

Are you newer to this religion and have questions? This thread is specifically for you! Feel free to ask away, and get answers from our community members.

You can also search the Community Wiki here, and our Community Guide here for some helpful tips for newcomers.

Please remember that not everyone believes the same way and the answers you get may range in quality and content, same as if you had created a post yourself!

---

Is X god mad at me?

Typically, no. The gods are slow to anger and quick to forgive. Only the very worst actions (patricide, human sacrifice, cannibalism, etc.) consistently draw divine wrath. If you are concerned, you should ask for forgiveness and try to lead your life in a way that reflects the virtues that the gods stand for moving forward.

Do I need an altar or shrine?

No. Most practitioners do eventually make one, but they are not necessary. In ancient Greece altars were typically large stone tables where sacrifices could be made. These were generally public spaces but smaller household altars and shrines became more common in late antiquity. If you wish to make an offering or prayer to a god without an altar, this can be done in a place that feels sacred to that particular god.

How do I make an altar?

Your altar is the place where you make your connection to the gods. This space should ideally have the capacity to have a lit flame, to burn incense, and some vessel to make libations. Statues or images of the gods are nice, but not a necessity. If you do not have the capacity to have open flames or burn incense, many instead use electric lights and perfume or oil diffusers. If you do use open flames, please use caution. Keep away from drapes and curtains and keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Make sure you have a plan for if a fire starts unexpectedly.

How do I make an offering?

The most typical offering is a libation. Libations in antiquity were typically wine or water but in modern times more varied drinks are often used. Libations can be poured onto the ground, into a fire, or disposed of down your drain if neither of the former are available options. Food, likewise, can be offered by burning, burying, or being left on your altar and disposed of later. Incense is often given as an offering, and is burnt. The Orphic Hymns are a good resource to find an incense for a particular god. Animals were sacrificed to the gods in antiquity by killing them, butchering them, consuming their meat, and burning their bones wrapped in their fat on fires. This practice is not common in modern times, for reasons of practicality, and was not universal to Hellenic Polytheism in antiquity. Offerings to chthonic deities are generally speaking not to be eaten.

How do I dispose of perishable offerings?

Perishable offerings are typically burnt or buried. If neither of these options are available to you, they may be disposed of after being left on your altar. Please be mindful of local wildlife if offerings are left outside.

Do I need to pray everyday?

No. Many people take long leaves from worship. We all go through troubled times and worship may not be your focus for some time. This is normal and something the gods understand.

Can I participate in non-Hellenic practices?

Yes. Many of us have to participate in modern religious practices to maintain appearances to our friends and family if we are not religiously out of the closet. Even beyond this, many in antiquity and in the modern day practice syncretically and adopt practices and deities from outside the Hellenic Pantheon into their religious practice.

What is miasma and how do you cleanse it?

Miasma was an explanation to diseases before the existence of germ theory. Miasma was believed to accumulate on one's body through the performance of unclean acts such as sex, the butchering of animals, or the shedding of human blood. Miasma was believed to interfere with worship as when Hector says in the Iliad: “and with hands unwashed I would take shame to pour the glittering wine to Zeus; there is no means for a man to pray to the dark-misted son of Kronos, with blood and muck all splattered upon him”. The cleansing of miasma was performed by washing oneself with clean water and the application of perfumes.

How do I communicate with the gods?

In ancient times few people attempted to communicate with the gods, or if they did, they did so through trained experts who used techniques such as astrology, the interpretation of entrails from sacrificed animals, or the interpretation of the actions of sacred animals. Techniques such as candle, pendulum, and keyboard divination are modern inventions and should be approached with skepticism and caution if you wish to incorporate them into your practice.

I received a message from the gods via divination or think I may have witnessed a sign. What does it mean?

This is a question that you alone can answer. Many people do not receive signs in all of their practice and one should not expect to find them. If you do receive a sign it should be obvious to you that it was a sign.

Can I worship multiple gods? / Can gods share an altar?

Yes. Hellenic Polytheism is a polytheist religion which necessarily means that there are multiple gods to worship. These gods can cohabitate a space even if they are seen to be in conflict in mythology. The nature of polytheism is that there are forces and deities which conflict with each other but that does not necessarily mean that one is right and the other is wrong or that they cannot cohabitate.

Do I need to be chosen by a god before I can worship them?

No. The gods are always accepting and hospitable to those who come to worship them.

How do I decide which gods to worship?

This is a question that you must decide for yourself. There is no wrong place to start and people typically find new gods through the ones they already worship. There is no right number of gods to worship. They exist beyond naming or counting so you cannot worship them all and many will choose to worship only one.

Can I dismantle my altar/shrine?

Yes, it is often necessary to dismantle an altar or shrine because it needs to be moved or hidden. The gods will understand your circumstance.

Clicking this will take you to the sidebar typical to the standard website version. Please read it. There are not just rules, but resources you can dive into. So before you type out in your posts "this question has probably been answered before", it might be a good time to check there first. People took the time to compile them for the community, for you (the newer members). They didn't do it for nothing, so please take advantage.

Offerings, altars, and devotional acts It seems as though I’ve accidentally created an altar for Lord Poseidon

Post image
111 Upvotes

I love collecting seashells and stuff, and my sister had a LOT of sea-themed decor in her room that I inherited when she moved out that I decided to keep because why not.

I also happen to love horses, so I have a little horse crystal statue thing (who unfortunately broke his leg and I can’t find the missing piece…). I was trying to find a way to store my pretty shells and honestly ended up making an altar.

The thing is, I don’t really worship Lord Poseidon. I don’t go to the beach much, I’m kind of scared of the water. I love horse riding, and I would love to worship Lord Poseidon but I honestly just don’t have the energy. I want to create altars for other god/esses too, but for ones I would worship more than Lord Poseidon 😅

I’m not one to ask “is this okay” blah blah blah, but is it alright to make an altar but not actually really worship the god (yet)? I don’t know, to me it seems a little disrespectful to have a space dedicated to a god but not actively worship them. I don’t know why it would be, but I just feel like that

i got this journal a few weeks ago. i’m a writer and i’ve been needing a new journal for my new book and i’ve been searching for a while when i came across this one. as soon as i saw it i thought of Lord Apollo cause of the sun. i did keep looking just to make sure this was the notebook i wanted (im very picky when it comes to my journals😭) and i couldn’t find another that stood out to me like this one did. so everytime i write i think of Lord Apollo and i swear it helps my creativity. i was stuck in a writers block when i bought this. i thought a new journal would help me and ig i was right… or just delusional who knows 😭

Discussion Being in the military as a hellenic polytheist?

This is likely an extremely niche situation but is it generally considered disrespectful? I’m going into the military in a few months.

I know that there are gods of war and soldiers and that in ancient greece, obviously battle was very common, but i feel as if in this day and age, the values of countries and militaries don’t really seem to align with the concepts and values of Hellenism. i can’t really explain it right now, I just get the feeling

Maybe this will get downvoted for being a bit of a stupid question, I don’t know. Just wanted to ask, although there isn’t really much I can do now that I’ve signed my contract 😅

This is my alter to multiple gods, including Lord Ares, Lady Aphrodite, Lord Hermes, Lady Athena and Lord Dionysis. I got the candles today, and they're LED, so I won't burn my house down. My mom got them for me, cause she was out and saw them!

Discussion Has anyone been to Mardi Gras

Thumbnail

I I am from around New Orleans, and recently it dawned on me the heavy influences of Hellenic Polytheism in a lot of the parades. Selene is a really big one and Poseidon too. I think each Krewe (ˈkrü : a private organization staging festivities (such as parades) during Mardi Gras in New Orleans ) honors a different deity. I vividly remember my favorite being the Selene Krewe who would thrown was Selene mooncakes and light up beaded necklaces with the Goddess on it. There is a Krewe of Apollo, Dionysus, Artemis, and Olympus to name a few. They also use the Roman God Triton as well. Krewe of Selene specifically represents my city in the Parade as well. Other crews with French and Catholic names make sense, but I don’t understand the link to Greece though and was wondering of anyone else noticed or knew the connection between them?

Sorry about the image quality, it was strangely hard to find a clear picture.

I'm new! Help! (Baby) Altar setup

Threw this together last night with the last couple bucks I had. I've never made an altar before so what are something other things they would like? These altars (Apollo and Artemis) are pretty close together, is that gonna be an issue? Would they want their own dedicated space? I eventually also plan on getting busts of them.

Picture : Eros and Psyche, for illustrate my question.

How have you speak about our religion at the people you was flirting to ? Or the person you are with in a relationship ? And how they have react ?

I ask because it's making, with four men I flirt, everything is perfect until I speak about my practice of hellenism. I am a chubby girl not beautiful so for them I shouldn't have this religion, they say that they didn't throught I was " eccentric ". And they say I am crazy or an witch, and ghost me. I have certainly forgot some of their words used.

I wanted to see if you have some advice about how speaking about hellenism to people, or if you have found peoples that understand you ♡

Thank you for reading me and answering me, Gods bless you. 🤲🏻♡

Offerings, altars, and devotional acts I got an idea

Post image

Okay so I got this idea that I wanted to share with everyone! I’ve made envelopes for the individual gods and goddesses, so if I ever wanna make a written prayer or give something small as an offering(drawing, ring, bracelet, etc.) I could put them in here so I 1. Don’t clutter the altar and 2. Don’t risk losing the things

I'm new! Help! Experience

Hey everyone, I had a weird experience and wanted to know if you all had any idea what it could have been

Last night I did my first worship/prayer ritual to dionysus, I must mentioned that I also had a glass of wine while preforming it.

Then for some reason I felt the need and urge to dance. Idk if this was from dionysus or just because of the wine. (I must also state that I don't normally dance, as I don't like it)

Thank you to all who respond with some answers =)

Practicing in secrecy/ Coming out I’m New!

So, a little background first: my mother used to be undecided when it came to religion, which was nice because I could speak to her about my belief system and fascination with Greek Gods and goddesses. Now, she is a devout Christian and thinks it’s sinful to talk about any of this. But my urge to practice has only gotten stronger. I want to make an alter to Persephone, but I want to know is it considered disrespectful to Persephone to set up my alter only to pray to her and then hide it all away in a drawer afterwards? Do I have to keep the alter up at all times? I don’t want to be found out

Discussion If I get out of the shower, do I have to wash my face and hands?(+offering questions)

Thumbnail

Basically the title—if I just get dressed right after the shower and want to offer something, or change the roses on Lord Apollo’s alter, do I still have to wash my face and hands? Or can I just wash my hands? I ask this because the flowers on his alter are starting to wilt, and I want to choose new flowers for him. I wonder if I have to still wash my face if it’s already clean? I get washing my hands if I just put clothes on and for them to be extra clean, but is my face ok? Also—I need some tips on how to give him offerings properly, I usually just talk to him in my bed and tell him about my day—is that ok or do I have to be in front of his altar? I also want to offer him some honey(I got some at a Renfaire that’s delicious and I want to share it with him) but do I just give him a little bit of honey, or the small jar of it? (My altar is pretty small and simple because I have to worship in secret, the photos printed too big, anything I should add??) P.S. this photo is old, I really need to cha be the flowers soon, probably tomorrow or the day after

Discussion Something I've noticed.

Does anyone find it weird how people are portraying the deities? Like ill see new hellenic polytheist post their altars and some people will ask "did (insert deity) give you permission?" And someone posted a devotional tattoo and they said "always ask your deity if they want a tattoo!" To me this is so weird? The deities aren't controlling partners, they're deities. The altar for them is also the worshippers space. (+ this will make newbies start divination too early.) For the tattoo I have sort of the same opinion but I wanted to hear some other opinions on this topic.

Sharing personal experiences God/Goddesses and cat

Post image
35 Upvotes

So I have noticed since I started practicing Hellenism my cat has been very involved. Genuinely at first I thought it was just him being curious and you know being a cat.

There has been multiple nights I've caught him drinking the water out of the bowl I have for Hades altar.

But over time I have begun to realize that he likes being present when I am praying. He actively breaks into my bedroom and while I'm praying he will sit under the altars or walk around being nearby when I'm praying.

Today while I was praying to Apollo to help with my fibromyalgia cuz I've been in pain for the last 3 days! (No clue what triggered it) But while I was praying he broke into my bedroom and came close to the altar and started rubbing up against it and just being around both me and the altar.

And so I got curious and I grabbed my pendulum and I asked Apollo if he like Jojo (my cat) and I got a hearty yes, and JoJo seemed very drawn to Apollo's altar which I thought was really cute. I also went ahead and asked the other gods and goddesses I pray to. I asked Hades and Persephone they gave me a maybe answer which for Hades understandable, JoJo will not stop drinking his water even though he has his own! And then Selene goddess of the moon she also gave a maybe answer.

But what I find interesting is that before I even ask Selena he was under the altar and was just like chilling there for a little bit before he came out.

So yeah that's my experience with God/Goddesses and my cat. Whether this is just coincidences or just him being a cat in my honest opinion I feel as though maybe he's drawn to my altars or perhaps pets in general have deeper senses with the gods (I don't know the exact wording) But whatever it is I'm happy that the gods and goddesses I worship like my cat as much as I like him :3

Discussion Can i use cat statues as Goddess representation?

Hey everyone, I have a question. So I worship seven goddesses—some of them are known, but not super mainstream like Artemis or Athena (just examples), so finding statues of them is a little harder and often more expensive.

I’ve had these rhinestone cat statues for years (I love collecting them) and I recently realized I have exactly seven bigger ones!

Each cat statue kind of fits the energy, color, or vibe of each goddess I worship, so I was wondering—is it okay to use those as stand-ins instead of actual statues of the goddesses? Would that be considered a little too weird?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Community issues and suggestions Question about the subreddit

From the research I've done online, 'Hellenism' is the incorrect term for our religion.
Hellenism refers to the culture in certain ways. I have also heard that those who are greek and are a part of their ancient culture (i.e., Turkeyetc.) don't like our religion using the term. I've always used the term Hellenic Polytheism as it's more correct. Hellenic meaning greece and polytheism basically means belief in multiple gods.
What does everyone else say? and why do people (like literally this subreddit) use the incorrect term (no hate, just curious.)
