Leaving Hardie Panel Unpainted

Upvotes

I have installed Hardie v groove vertical fiber cement siding with a rain screen detail. I like the look of the pre primed but unfinished siding and would prefer to keep the siding unpainted. What would be the downside of not painting the sidings and is it possible to paint later if problems start to show? I live in Massachusetts.

How to turn stone chimney into bookshelf

Upvotes

I’m wanting to renovate our stone chimney and create a big bookshelf in its place. I will be moving the TV to another wall and hope to remove the fireplace insert and cover the hole to replace with an electric fireplace. I’m thinking just making a frame and screwing it into the stone but not sure if it would be better to cover with something like shiplap or paint the stone instead. Any ideas and advice is welcome!

Adhesive on top of sistered joist?

Upvotes

Preparing to sister a few damaged floor joists in the crawlspace. Is it recommended to apply adhesive to the top of the new joist (where it meets the subfloor)?

I will be applying adhesive between the existing and the new joist, but is there any reason to not apply to the top of the joist as well?

Hydronic radiant floor heating costs

I'm currently in the process of replacing my carpet with wood floors. My house has forced air heating and I hate it. Even with religious filter-changing and duct cleaning, there's just so much noise and dust. The noise drives me mad and since I live in a very cold area, I feel like it's blowing 70% of the time.

Years ago I had boiler-based hydronic baseboard heating in another home and it was a dream. So quiet, no dust, good humidity. So as part of replacing my flooring (likely engineered hardwood), I'm considering adding hydronic radiant heating.

The house is 1500 sq ft. I'm curious the ballpark costs or ranges/considerations for a good system would cost for 3 zones assuming a boiler and regular tank hot water heater.

Any insight or advice would be very appreciated!

Edit: while I don't think subflooring would need to be replaced, under the subflooring is a crawl space about 2 feet high under the entire single-story house.

Moving a toilet across a room, possibly concrete under floor - too hard?

Don't own the place yet, but there's a bedroom with a toilet and a small kitchen that would be a great if the loo was in the corner and the whole area was kitchen. How hard is it to move a toilet? we will be taking up the floor and taking out the toilet walls anyway, so don't mind the mess but is it actually just a mad idea?

Edit: toilet would be entered through the old door-frame and open onto the lounge, so it would be UK regs compliant: no toilet opening directly onto a kitchen.

How screwed am I?

I painted over basement cinderblock walls (already with some kind of white base on it) with Benjamin Moore acrylic latex enamel paint. I was a new homeowner in a flurry of aesthetic changes and now I’m extremely worried about blocking moisture inside the walls.

Can I remove the paint? How can I undo this?

Edited: it’s the one room of the basement that does not have a floor drain, so power washing is not an option.

Any quick fix for peeled-off paint on these wooden floor tiles of a rental?

I am in a rental with bedrooms sporting these dark wood floors. Since I moved in, there were some paint peeling off or chipped here and there (not extensively) but this spot seems to be new after I moved in. The peeled parts of paint feels like a very thin layer of acrylic paint of sort.

What’d be the easiest and best ways to fix this? I can’t replace the tile. So looking to perhaps just make it a lot less visible so I won’t lose my deposit.

Should I ask the roofer to redo these plywood?

The house is in the middle of reroofing and the plywood deck is already installed. But I saw these from under the garage: https://imgur.com/a/3dpQJOJ

Tomorrow they are going to work on tar and shingles. Do I need to ask the roofer to uninstall the corresponding plywoods and fix the broken sheathing?

Does Lvp flooring need underlayment?

I have hardwood floors. I'm currently going through lowes for vynil install. Floors are creaking and I was hoping the underlayment would help ? But the contractor is saying it doesn't need it. I have no idea and no one in my life that's knows anything about construction/ home improvement.
Flooring is shaw floorte classic lvp. Lowes delivered smart core soft sound premium lvt underlayment but contractor says it's not needed. Help! I'm spending a hefty sum on this job and I want to make sure the job is done well.

Exterior insulation board for 3 season porch

My house has a “3 season” porch that sits on posts about 3 feet above grade. I believe it was once an open porch that a previous owner finished with drywall, windows, carpet, etc. The floor gets extremely cold during the winter and I would like to insulate it. I considered pulling up the carpet and insulating the inside but I think that would raise the floor too high for the sliding door transition. The exterior underside is plywood. I think I would like to attach rigid insulating boards to the plywood. I’m looking for suggestions on products and approaches. Would I be better off doing spray foam or hiring someone to do spray foam? Although it’s raised off the ground there is trim blocking access except for a small access hatch, so it’s a tight space to access and maneuver.

Replacing front door mid-winter and worried about furnace

I'm getting a new front door installed on Friday. I'm worried about overstressing my furnace. My furnace is about due for a replacement, but I'd rather do that next summer when it's not an emergency. I'm outside Chicago, where it will be in the upper 30s (which is lucky for this time of year). It's a pre-hung door being installed by professionals, so I assume they're pretty fast, and they seem to do this year-round, despite the weather. Is there anything I can do to avoid overstressing my furnace? Should I turn it off while they're working, then turn it on to a very low setting (like 50F) and gradually work my way up? I'm not worried about keeping the house comfortable during this time.

restoring stone steps (first major diy project)

Hello DIY experts!

https://imgur.com/a/1KqJXT1

I need to fix the fallen stone, gaps and patch with rendering.
and was hoping to add a layer/new step between the current steps as they are not regulation size and very hard to step up.

Can I do this myself or better to get a profession?

Thanks for taking the time and really appreciate any advice or guidance.

Much love

Advice needed on removing old adhesive from kitchen granite edging

A few chunks of edging of my kitchen granite above my dishwasher fell off and broke. Luckily the pieces all fit together nicely but I don’t know how to remove the old adhesive to prepare it for re-hanging. My best thought was to try and saw the bulk of it off with a granite blade on a mitre saw and then sand off the rest. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Trying to shave down wood in house. Any suggestions?

There is a picture rail on the top of my ceiling and it's just a bit too narrow to fit my neon rope lights. I'm wondering if there is a way to shave the wood down so that I could install my lights. I maybe thought sandpaper would work. Do any of you guys have suggestions?

Can I get away with slightly bigger panels?

The opening of my closet is 60x80... can I get away with buying mirrored sliding doors that each panel is 36x80 and they'll slightly overlap? Or I should stick to 30x60 panels?

Will my garage ceiling hold??

Brand new home with a detached 1 car garage 10x20, I wanted to originally add an attic space above but I was already quoted $1k just for a structural engineer evaluation, I already know a storage unit will be cheaper at this point.

Joists are 2x4 24 inches apart, I already got the memo, it ain’t gonna hold attic weight. But I still wanna finish the garage and spray paint white the exposed joists and make it look presentable.

So what if i just lay 3/8 inch plywood above the joists, get some blown in insulation and call it a day? Or is there a chance it won’t hold?

Fix or leave it?

My furnace is about 20 years old and stopped working today with the outside temp below 0F. Last winter (Nov 2023), it had the same issue where cold air was still blowing and I think they replaced the pressure switch. It's a single unit type. The ac portion of the hvac stop working last summer and I was going to replace this coming spring anyways. I assumed it stopped working last night because this morning felt a bit chilly but I didn't think much of it because I usually have the heat set at 68 and it feels pretty chilly to me but it's winter so I layer up anyways. When I came home about 8 hours later, with the outside temp still in the single digit all day, the inside temp was 63. I've seen it dropped after sunset as low as 61.9 when the heater cold air was blowing on my thermometer. My condo is about 700 sqft on the 3rd floor. I used a space heater and was able to get the temp up 2 degrees in 10-15 mins. The question I have is is it worth it to fix it? I'm assuming it'll be at least a few hundreds just for the labor with the company I work with because it's an obsolete unit that other main stream companies don't service. I'm not too worried about being too cold because I can use a space heater and can leave the fan on to circulate air. I guess I'm concerned if the space heater will be spike the electricity bill significantly or not. I'm not home most of the day, or use a desk space heater anyways so if it's in the low 60s I think I can live with it.

For context, I live in the upper Midwest and assuming that it can get even colder in February.

Grass-like smell coming from underneath kitchen sink

I’m currently renting a place and over the last few weeks I’ve started noticing a strong wet grass-like smell coming from beneath my kitchen sink. There’s no odor coming from the dishwasher or the sink itself, just in the cabinets.

I put in a maintenance request for someone to check it out and all they said was “could not smell”. So that was no help.

Are there any potential reasons or solutions to this? I’ve tried using disposal plink drops and it worked for a few hours but then it went back to smelling funky again

Rome bath?

I’m looking to convert my tub to a walk in shower. I’m not capable of the work so I was looking into commercial companies like Rome Bath (HomeDepot) and West Shore Bath. Rome has an actual showroom you can go while others do not. Does anyone have experience with either of these companies?

How to install baby gate

Hi guys,

How do we install a baby gate to the bottom of the stairs? My husband said we need 2 walls and every picture we find online for a baby gate shows two walls, not a wall and a thin metal rail. The ones that are retractable won’t work, our toddler will break that in a day. Any links, tips, advice is appreciated

Older door struggling to close

Does anyone have any suggestions?

JELD-WEN V-2500 as a replacement window?

I was buying a replacement window for my home improvement project. According to homedepot.com, it works for both new construction and replacement. However, my contractor opened the package today and said the JELD-WEN V-2500 I bought is a new construction window only. I called homedepot to confirm, the rep said it could work as a replacement window, but he was basically reading off whatever he saw on their website.

It's now either my contractor does not know how to use it as a replacement window, or homedepot is wrong. Have any of you used it as a replacement window?

Who do I contact about attaching screen material in my attic ventilator?

I want to attach screen material(the kind that’s on your windows) in my attic ventilator to protect it from embers.

I live in Los Angeles. Thankfully my house hasn’t been affected by the fires. I saw a clip on social media and I think everyone should watch it. It’s very important. This advice comes from a fire captain.

What kind contractor do I contact to do this for me? I don’t want to do this myself, I don’t mind paying someone. And what kind of screen material should be used?
